- He and his professional partner, Lee Mindel, founded Shelton, Mindel, & Associates architecture firm. Their firm was inducted into the Interior Hall of Fame in 1996. They were awarded the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Interior Design in 2011. They have won over 25 awards from the American Institute of Architects.

- He and Lee Mindel met as undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia but they met years later at an escalator at Bloomingdale's in New York City where they started their own architecture firm.
