Brenda Giegerich & Kaethe Kauffman Kathleen Cullen Gallery, NYC
Kaethe Kauffman’s archival inkjet and mixed media scrolls are comprised of suggestive vignettes, lucid passages, and familiar pairings. However, an elusive narrative emerges that defies that base. The main thread, parts of the body, registers in ways that are both intimate and particular, while the anonymity of the faceless figures gives each work a more symbolist tone. There are patterns here as well that suggest one cause of behavior that develops through repetition. It is also quite possible that Ms. Kauffman is commenting on how we target gesture and color, then detail in our daily observations when we make a judgment or speculation.
I like, in particular, the use of cursive writing paper in “Muscle Movement: Knee, Script Scroll,” where a sequence of the backs of bandaged and banded knees creates a long oval framework that surrounds the repetitive writing samples.

Four episodes into its second season, Falling Skies is continuing to ramp up the action and bigger story arcs of the season. In “Worlds Apart,” we watched the return of Tom Mason as he was welcomed back as both a hero and possible threat to the 2nd Mass. In “Shall We Gather At the River,” the 2nd Mass tried to overcome the threat of being boxed in by the aliens who were now tracking them doggedly in order to prevent another attack. In “Compass,” Pope and Tom came to physical blows and Pope found himself asked to leave the survivors; while Ben came to grips over the death of his friend Jimmy. Then in last week’s episode “Young Bloods,” Captain Weaver’s daughter is found with a group of young children, who had to be rescued before they can be harnessed by the aliens.

Ep. 201 “Worlds Apart”
Ep. 202 “Shall We Meet At The River”
There were no two bigger ratings-grabbers on basic cable last year than The Walking Dead and Falling Skies. Both post-apocalyptic survival stories, but one is because of zombies, and the other is from aliens. The Walking Dead questions if humanity can survive the pursuit of an unknown, relentless enemy. Falling Skies, which premiered Sunday, asks similar questions through a sci-fi-military filter and with an enemy that our protagonists can see and combat. The first season followed a group of refugees from Boston comprised of bits and pieces of a makeshift army, a band of renegades and citizens who have taken to an all-out war. At first they are just trying to stay alive, but by the end of the season, they are given hope–a small understanding of the invaders’, their intentions and an idea of how to defeat them.

Falling Skies’ first season had a lot going for it – a strong concept, likeable characters, exciting action sequences, and an interesting mythology – but because of its strengths its weaknesses became more apparent. The storytelling was often below what you would expect from a science fiction series about an alien invasion, with the majority of the episodes ending on inappropriately upbeat notes, as if the 2nd Massachusetts wasn’t under constant threat of extermination. Occasionally the show would go down these rabbit holes that can only be described as serious missteps. What immediately comes to mind is the two-part episode involving the kidnapping and trading of kids to the aliens. As Season 2 began, the worry on my mind was how Falling Skies would address these concerns. Would it be aware of its faults and take the necessary steps to improve itself or would it stubbornly press forward, pulling a...

The first season of Falling Skies was solid if not spectacular.
It featured the worn out premise of aliens attacking Earth, but it grounded that concept in a handful of interesting characters, led by TV Fanatic favorite Noah Wyle as the reluctant Second Mass second-in-command, Tom Mason, a history teacher thrust into a leadership/combat role and focused on one primary objective: the safety of his three sons.
Too often, such as on the season one finale, characters simply talked about action instead of taking any, but the concluding episode wrapped up with one of the more intriguing cliffhangers on any series I cover: Tom strolling into an alien spaceship.
And season two sort of picks up right from there. Yes, three months have gone by since Tom made his fateful decision, but he gets re-introduced to his friends and family members within minutes of the two-hour premiere.*

Colin Cunningham’s John Pope was easily one of the best things about “Falling Skies” Season 1. The charming, dangerous, and downright untrustworthy con/merc/jack of all trades made the show pretty lively, and you never really knew what the guy was going to do. The total exact opposite of Noah Wyle’s hero, to be perfectly honest with you. Now it looks like Pope will have even more to do in the second season of “Falling Skies”. Check out a new featurette that focuses on Pope and his Berserkers. “Falling Skies” returns Sunday, June 17, at 9 p.m. on TNT with the first episode, “Worlds Apart”. The premiere finds Tom Mason (Wyle) returning to the 2nd Mass after is encounter with the aliens. Just in time, too, because it looks like the war is ramping up.

"Fringe" has had some great villains over the years, but the return of Leonard Nimoy as William Bell in the first part of the season finale "Worlds Apart" might mean the end of both universes. Bell wants to create his own new world and it doesn't matter who dies in the attempt.

The introductions to Fringe are always one of the best parts of each episode and this week’s introduction was no exception. It was undoubetdly one of the most engaging of the season, as a man came walking out of a cafe and collapsed before his death just as others around him were finding the same fate. But this wasn’t your typical case of the week scenario. David Robert Jones was behind it all. With the season finale airing next week, can’t say we’re surprised. But there were still plenty of jaw dropping moments intertwined, making this one of the best episodes of the season.
We were treated to Lost alum, Rebecca Mader as a guest star this week, playing Jessica Holt, one of the victims who came in contact with what resulted in spontaneous human combustion. Kudos to the random woman who said, “Don’t move.

Please allow me to say it once more – Thank Fox we’re getting one more season of Fringe! This week and next would be pure agony, watching the season finale, knowing that it would be the series finale – it’s too horrible to think about. Instead, we can rejoice, and sit back, or forward, and enjoy part one of the season finale tonight.

Introducing a new feature to Famous Monsters is a quick rundown of the shows reviewed weekly by Andy, ranked in order from the worst (or the least best, if you want to be nice about it) to the best. This week was an especially tough task, because there wasn’t a weak episode in the bunch. Be sure to debate the rankings, provide your own, or insist on any new TV shows that you’d like to see on the list in the comments.
4. Grimm, Season 1, Episode 19, “Leave It To Beavers” (Air Date 4/27)
Sergeant Batista (David Zayas) shows up as a troll hungry for money and beavers in this solid episode that proves he may not have much range beyond Dexter. The ending is pretty great, and the show is relying more on its world than police cases, always a positive sign for a show’s development (if not for ratings).

“Worlds Apart” Air Date: 4/27/2012
Continuing the explosive pace of the past couple episodes, “Worlds Apart” is the perfect primer to what is sure to be a cataclysmic, multiple universe shaping two part season finale. While it’s mostly set up, a helluva lot happens and there’s a ton of great character moments and more one on one scenes between our favorite characters and their alters than in any other episode previous.
Our Walter, all done up in a suit and tie, has organized a meeting between the two universes to discuss his hypothesis about David Robert Jones’ true purpose. He believes that Jones plans to play God, to collapse both universes to create a gravitational singularity, creating his own big bang, and in the fallout, create his own new universe where he controls the laws of gravity and science and motion and all the things Stephen Hawking could...

When Fringe introduced the Other Side, they broke new ground for genre fiction. Plenty of films and TV shows have toyed with the idea of alternate universes, but none have used the trope to do such in-depth character analysis or exploration of identity. Besides giving the cast fantastic opportunities to stretch themselves and demonstrate their range, the Other Side has given the series any number of intriguing storylines, not to mention doubling the character count without doubling the budget.

Fringe 4.20 "Worlds Apart" Review
Last night's Fringe was an episode heavily laden with mythology, yet it still managed to include some wonderfully poignant character moments. The reintroduction of Nick Lane and the other Cortexiphan kids in “Worlds Apart” finally revealed what David Robert Jones had in store for both worlds: Jones’ plan was to use the former Cortexiphan subjects to tune into their Alternates on the Other Side in order to weaken the barrier between the universes to collapse both worlds. Although it was certainly telegraphed, I kept hoping that there would be another way to stop Jones than closing the Bridge, and I refuse to believe that that's the last we'll see of the Other Side.
Only in Fringe could the characters go from battling against their Alternates to fighting instead to keep the bridge between the worlds open. Somewhere along the way these strange bedfellows became not only allies but friends,...

I know this is Fringe and that anything can happen. And I thank Fox for giving a fifth season, 13 episode pickup to wrap up the Fringe legacy in the best way possible. But what happened in "Worlds Apart" doesn't make any of that knowledge in the least bit comforting.
There was a lot of back story, most of which dealt with the continuation of David Robert Jones and his hell bent desire to destroy the universes. Not that it really mattered: once they realized what a whack job he was and that he was using cortexiphan subjects to align with their alterverse counterparts to tune the worlds to the same frequency, it came down to only one plausible solution.
My stomach plummeted when Peter suggested closing the link between the worlds.
There has never been any hiding of my deep affection for the alterverse. Proud and gutsy, we had Over There our same characters,...

“Fringe” fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing tonight wasn’t the antepenultimate episode of the series. Instead, “Worlds Apart” served as a stepping stone to the two-part season finale, which will appease both those that simply want more “Fringe” and those who hope the final season can correct some of the missteps from this year. While last week’s “Letters of Transit” felt like a show confident in its ability to pay off the speculative fiction inherent in its premise way down the line, “Worlds” felt like a show starting to tie off some loose ends before heading into the...

The good news, which you hopefully saw yesterday, is that Fringe has been renewed for 13 more episodes. The bad news for today is that they did not release the usual clips and Noble Intentions featurette that they’ve done for so many prior episodes. Oh Thank Fox! We don’t mind telling you that we’ve been sweating this one, but finally Fox has finally announced that the most excellent Fringe has been renewed for – and here it comes – 13 final episodes. This means that it will have 100 episodes, the magic number required for it to go into syndication.
So it’s a last season, but it means More Fringe. It’s only a half season (in the network world), but it means More Fringe. It means a conclusion, on their terms, and Fringe at all hours through syndication. The good outweighs the bad in most fan reckoning.

Fringe Gets Renewed for Final, 13 Episode Season
Fringe fans can finally stop chewing their fingernails -- Fox has renewed the fan favorite sci-fi series for a fifth and final season of thirteen episodes. The announcement came on Thursday, after weeks of nervous anticipation leading up to the announcement of the fate of the bubble show. Despite the cautious optimism of executive producers J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner, fans were worried that the series might come to an abrupt conclusion in just a few weeks, at the end of its fourth season. Now, however, we have an ending in sight.
In a press release, Fox president Kevin Reilly, an outspoken fan of the show, had this to say about the show's renewal: "Fringe is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television’s most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide...

In 1983, to promote their hit single "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," Journey shot their first scripted music video that wasn't just remastered concert footage (or in-studio footage). If the goal was to make a great music video, that did not happen. If the goal was to make one of the cheesiest music videos ever put to film -- a video so infamous that, almost 30 years later, we're still talking about it -- then, yes mission accomplished.

TNT’s Falling Skies season 2 tease ups the stakes
Falling Skies Season 2 is coming to TNT this summer and already I’m very impressed by what we’ve been shown in preparation for the premiere. At the Emerald City Comicon, a three-minute clip was shown from the opening moments of the two-hour premiere, titled “Worlds Apart.” Those first few minutes from the episode are the most intense I’ve ever seen Falling Skies. I watched the entire first season last summer, and while the show had some positives to it (mainly a cool mythology and a handful of great characters like John Pope) it suffered a lot in its execution. It’s a little too early to say for sure, but this new footage makes me feel like Falling Skies may be heading in a better direction.
The video picks up right where Season 1 left off, with Tom being led...
