A young man has to deal with the loss of his abusive father while stuck in his dead end job and trying to remain sober. He has help from his AA sponsor and his best friend but when a new guy enters his life full of promises and seemingly good advice, he can’t help in becoming a little infatuated. And this infatuation leads to some unwanted situations in this psychological thriller.
The Way Out comes from Terror Films, a company I generally enjoy but my general expectations are that their movies will be low-budget, sometimes amateur, horror movies that I will mostly have fun with. So The Way Out stuck out like a sore thumb immediately by just looking good and having clearly experienced actors in the lead roles. The performances are strong from...

DC’s Stargirl this week closed out the “Infinity Inc.” two-parter that hit pause on Season 3’s murder mystery storyline. What fun Easter eggs were to be found amid the otherwise verrry serious episode?
I have probably said before on these here pages that I am no great fan of “mindscape” episodes that deposit characters into other planes of existence to sort through their stuff. Between Stargirl, The Flash and Titans, to name just DC series, such episodes seem to come at a pretty steady clip.

Three years ago, platforms were asking Spanish producers for full rights to their TV fiction projects for all territories.
Times have changed. As platforms’ revenues taper off or slow in growth, originals are less habitual. Co-production is increasingly becoming the name of the game.
A first-phase boom was triggered by Netflix titles “Money Heist” and “Elite.”
Now, Spain is maintaining its momentum, remaining a priority region for Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video. Newcomers Disney+, Paramount+ and Lionsgate+ have unveiled their first original productions.
Local champions, Telefonica’s paybox Movistar+ and Atresmedia’s platform Atresplayer Premium, harbor strong artistic ambitions.
As platforms pause production in parts of the world, and Netflix rejigs its business model, Spain’s TV producers are ringing their options, plunging ever more into co-production.
“The market is being rationalized and shared production models don’t leave all the rights in the platform’s hands,” says Caroline Servy,...

After parting ways with the Doom Patrol, Timothy Dalton is making tracks for Montana with a role in Paramount+’s upcoming Yellowstone prequel 1923, our sister site Deadline reports.
The next chapter of what Paramount+ is calling Yellowstone‘s “origin story” — which began with the wildly popular 1883 prequel spinoff — will introduce viewers to a new generation of the series’ central family, the Duttons. Through them, per an official description, the series will “explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.

Plot: Inspired by the original hit Swedish novel and film, the series centers on Mark (Bichir) and his daughter Eleanor (Baez), whose lives were changed 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the human blood she needs to stay alive.
Review: It is amazing to me that in the 18 years since the titular novel was released, we are about to get our third version of Let the Right One In. After the acclaimed Swedish film in 2008 and Matt Reeves’ well-received remake two years later, Showtime’s take on the vampire story by John Ajvide Lindqvist deviates the most from the source material to create a unique blend of the narrative you may be familiar with combined with conventions of many other television shows.

A couple weeks ago, we shared the first image from the horror film My Best Friend’s Exorcism, an adaptation of a novel by Grady Hendrix (buy it Here), which will be released through Amazon Prime on September 30th. Directed by Damon Thomas (Penny Dreadful) from a screenplay by Jenna Lamia (Good Girls), My Best Friend’s Exorcism has the following synopsis:
Surviving the teenage years isn’t easy, especially when you’re possessed by a demon. It’s 1988, and best friends Abby and Gretchen are navigating boys, pop culture, and a paranormal force clinging to Gretchen like a pair of neon legwarmers. “Game of Thrones” has ruled the non-prosthetic makeup Emmy category for four out of its six seasons — winning Emmys the last two years in a row. But the race is wide open this season during its hiatus, with the nominees ranging from perennials “Vikings” (its fourth nomination) and “Penny Dreadful” (its first nomination) to newcomers “Westworld,” “Stranger Things,” and “This Is Us.”
While the Norse-driven “Vikings” (“All His Angels”) offered lots of tattoos, scars, and blood, and the supernatural “Penny Dreadful” (“Perpetual Night”) boasted a rogues gallery of scars, creepy flesh, and gore, the race will come down to sci-fi dual universes and time-hopping family drama.
“Westworld” (“The Original”)

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What’s a show that you may have quit or written off, but were happy that you gave a second chance?
(This could mean a show that got better as it went along, a show that course-corrected, a show that you felt got lumped together with others and therefore didn’t get a fair shake at first, or one that you see differently because of some changed perspective in your own life.)
Pilot Viruet (@pilotbacon), Vice

"The Furniture," by Daniel Walber, is our weekly series on Production Design. You can click on the images to see them in magnified detail.
Last year, I made a pitch to the Academy of Television Arts and Science on the subject of production design. Hopefully you also remember that amazing table tennis parlor from Penny Dreadful. But what you might not remember is that not a single one of the nominees I recommended actually won. Not even Lemonade, about which I am still annoyed.
But here I am, one year later, trying again. Here’s who should win each of the five production design Emmys. (At least Game of Thrones isn’t eligible this year, or they’d be winning for the fourth year in a row.)

Last year, “Thrones” dominated the Creative Arts Emmys, winning nine awards for its sixth season – including contemporary/fantasy production design, period/fantasy costume design, single-camera drama editing, non-prosthetic and prosthetic makeup, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt coordination.
This season, the fantasy drama didn’t premiere in time to be eligible, opening the door for such newcomers as the HBO sci-fi western, “Westworld,” and Netflix’s period thriller, “Stranger Things.”
Also in the mix are Netflix’s royalty drama “The Crown” (filling the “Downton Abbey” void), which competes for costume design with FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan,” Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” (also in the running for production design), and “Genius,” National Geographic’s take on Albert Einstein.

This could be the year that Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes Emmy history.
Nominated once again for playing Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” Louis-Dreyfus is the favorite to win her sixth consecutive Emmy as outstanding comedy actress. In doing so, she would beat the record for most Emmys won by a performer in the same role for the same series.
Right now, Louis-Dreyfus is in a three-way tie with Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”) and Don Knotts (“Andy Griffith Show”). All three thesps won five Emmys for their roles on those shows. Now, Louis-Dreyfus is poised to leap ahead.
What’s more, she’s also in line this year to tie Cloris Leachman for the most Emmys ever won by a female performer. Leachman has eight; Louis-Dreyfus has seven – tied with Mary Tyler Moore and Allison Janney. (Janney, of course, is competing with Louis-Dreyfus in the comedy...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the scariest moment or scene on TV?
Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire
Though there are moments within “Penny Dreadful” (the seance) and “The X-Files” (“Home”) that left me spooked, the title for scariest TV scene has to go to the only show to give me nightmares — actual, legitimate nightmares. After watching the first two episodes of “Hannibal,” I woke up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat and haunted by a bright red room with blood running down the walls — twice! Two weeks in a row, “Hannibal” ruined my peaceful slumber, and I had to stop watching the show live (and during the night entirely). Each week,...

With Star Trek Discovery (the first Trek TV series since 2005) due to begin shooting very soon, CBS All Access have begun the process of finalizing their cast for the hotly anticipated take on the iconic franchise.
They’d previously announced that Shazah Latif (Penny Dreadful) would be playing Klingon Commanding Officer Kol, but he’s now to be joining Starfleet as Lieutenant Tyler, with the Kol role taken by Kenneth Mitchell. Joining them are a bevy of new faces, with Rekha Sharma to be the Starship Discovery’s security officer, and Clare McConnell and Damon Runyan to be leaders in the warring Klingon Empire.
After the retro fetishization of the last three movies, the prospect of a new crew, ship and missions is an exciting prospect for Trekkies. Word is that this’ll be set roughly a decade before the original Star Trek, and will shake up the general format...

I love Mary-Louise Parker, and she's landed another solid TV role. She has joined the cast of Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes series. The story follows "a demented killer (Penny Dreadful's Harry Treadaway) who taunts a retired police detective (Brendan Gleeson) with a series of lurid letters and emails, forcing the ex-cop to undertake a private, and potentially felonious, crusade to bring the killer to justice before he is able to strike again."
Parker will have a recurring role in the series as a character named Janey Patterson, described as "the younger sister of the late Olivia Trelawney. Janey's no-nonsense but charming attitude radiates, as does her physical beauty. She's emotionally mature, strong-willed and totally winning."
This seems like a perfect role for Parker to take on, and there's no doubt she'll be awesome in it. Anton Yelchin was set to star in the series as the villain before his tragic,...

For the second year in a row, a “Star Wars” movie leads all films at the Visual Effects Society Awards nominations with seven nods: “Rogue One” has done just as “The Force Awakens” did a year ago, followed closely by “Doctor Strange” and “The Jungle Book,” both of which scored six. All of them were bested by “Game of Thrones,” however, which scored 11 nominations.

Gore can be used to complement suspense and psychological horror, or it can be used as a last-ditch effort to shock the audience and provide a cheap plot twist. As usual, television in 2016 featured both! This year's TV featured arguably less gore than last year, and critics noted especially the comparative lack of open wounds in American Horror Story.
The decrease in bloodshed may signify a shift back to the more insidious type of creepy seen in series like Penny Dreadful and Outcast and early seasons of The Walking Dead. For other shows, imagery of heads exploding like watermelons and entrails slithering out of wounds like worms exist apart from horror and more as a sort of "well, that's the age we're in" reminder -- take Game of Thrones, Vikings or Hannibal. Is it notable, then, that "gore-era" shows like Spartacus, Hannibal and The Knick have been cancelled in recent years?...

Today Hollywood said goodbye to one of the most important entertainment executives of the 20th Century.
