Pope Francis, Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Un chief Ban Ki-Moon will be honored at the upcoming Cinema for Peace gala in Berlin on February 19.
The long-running gala run by the Cinema for Peace Foundation will be accompanied by the inaugural World Forum on the Future Of Democracy, Tech and Humankind.
The latter event will run from February 18 to 19 at the Allianz Forum next to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin with the aim of promoting the renewal of democracy and freedom at a time when both are under threat.
The Cinema for Peace Foundation was created in 2008 as an international non-profit organization with the goal to foster change through film. Over the years it has worked with a host of stars including Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney.
Clinton and Ban will attend the February 19 gala in person while Pope Francis will be shown receiving his award in a recorded video.

“Such a weird habit that I’ve got into today,” says Dan Tapster, the showrunner for Life on Our Planet. “I’ll say, ‘Yeah, we were there to film mammoths. Yeah, people, we’re here to film a T-Rex.’”
And yet, there isn’t really a better way to describe what the team of Life on Our Planet had to do for years to create the footage that makes up the documentary series. Of course, being CGI VFX, the prehistoric stars of the series are a good deal more compliant than the stars of your average nature documentary. But it also required much more planning.
“More so than with our normal series, there was a lot more pre-production,” says Sophie Lanfear, the producer-director and writer of episodes three and eight. “This had an extended phase of research and development before we even went into the field and shot stuff.

For director/producer Sophie Lanfear shooting the “Frozen Worlds” episode of the Netflix documentary series Our Planet involved less than posh accommodations.
“When we were in Russia filming the walrus we lived in a shed. I was the only female and there were seven of us…stacked on shelves,” she recalls. “That’s where we ate, slept, watched telly, downloaded rushes and everything.”
The living conditions may have been rough, but there were rewards—like capturing some unprecedented images.
“The orca killing the penguin predation sequence had never been filmed before,” she tells Deadline. Her team also filmed leopard seals in a novel grouping.
“They’ve always been documented as solitary animals that aren’t very sociable. And it’s never been recorded in any observations anywhere of 36 in one place at one time,” Lanfear notes. “When you’re finding stuff that’s new to science it’s really exciting.

Veteran nature cinematographer Jamie McPherson “couldn’t not be involved” with “Our Planet.” Netflix‘s eight-part documentary series narrated by David Attenborough takes viewers through some of nature’s greatest wonders, so he was intrigued by the “huge scope” of the series and “the stories they wanted to tell,” which had “conservation at the heart of it.” Watch our exclusive video interview with McPherson above.
See Sophie Lanfear interview: ‘Our Planet’
McPherson traveled around the globe for the show, and everywhere he went he was tasked with capturing the native wildlife in a unique way. For instance, in the opening episode, “One Planet,” he shot wild dogs and wildebeests in the African Serengeti and “wanted to show people what it was like to be on the hunt with a pack of wild dogs,” he explains. It’s “an amazing thing in itself. You see them running, they’re so fast...

Sophie Lanfear “jumped at the chance” to direct an episode of “Our Planet” because of its central message. The eight-part Netflix documentary series takes audiences around the world to see the wonders of nature, with David Attenborough as your guide. But at the same time it shows how climate change could destroy those wonders. “I want to make more conservation-heavy films if I can,” Lanfear explains, so this was a perfect job for her. Watch our exclusive video interview with Lanfear above.
See Steven Price interview: ‘Our Planet’
As a veteran nature documentarian with directing and producing credits that include “Life Story” and “The Hunt,” Lanfear is always thinking about how to “raise the bar” in the medium. “We’re searching for new stories, fresh angles,” she says. After getting an assignment “you then have to construct your narrative, and through that process work out what is the central story or thesis of the film.
