Washington, Sep 13: Sadism is much more common than people would like to believe, a new research has suggested.
Two studies led by psychological scientist Erin Buckels of the University of British Columbia revealed that people who score high on a measure of sadism seem to derive pleasure from behaviours that hurt others, and are even willing to expend extra effort to make someone else suffer.
Buckels and colleagues Delroy Paulhus of the University of British Columbia and Daniel Jones of the University of Texas El Paso decided to examine everyday sadism under controlled laboratory conditions. They recruited 71 participants to take part in a study on 'personality and tolerance for challenging jobs.'

Amiel Courtin-Wilson.s new feature film, Hail, takes its inspiration from the lives of his two stars: Danny Jones and his partner Leanne Letch. They tell Brendan Swift about their journey and special relationship.
Daniel Jones If you believe in God . God created the world and made two really good hearts: he gave one to Mother Teresa and the other one was given to Leanne. Leanne.s got three children and their father died an untimely death. And instead of her calling back on the government, she thought, .if this is the best that the world.s got to offer me, I have to do something for myself..
So she took her children to the country, where there was open spaces and fresh air and, not only did she bring up those three, she went about finding street kids that had suffered some sort of abuse or couldn.t go...

It may be Star Wars day (May the fourth be with you), but how seriously should we take the growing church of Jediism?
Today is Star Wars Day, being May the Fourth. (Say the date slowly, several times.) Around the world, film buffs, storm troopers and Jedi are gathering to celebrate one of the greatest science fiction romps of all time. It would be easy to let the fan boys enjoy their day and be done with it. However, Jediism is a growing religion in the UK. Although the results of the 2001 census, in which 390,000 recipients stated their religion as Jedi, have been widely interpreted as a pop at the government, the UK does actually have serious Jedi.
For those of you who, like BBC producer Bill Dare, have never seen Star Wars, the Jedi are "good" characters from the films. They draw from a mystical entity binding the universe,...

Former American sweetheart Meg Ryan might not be the star she once was when she was breaking our hearts in classic romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless In Seattle but there's no doubt she deserves her place in Hollywood history.
Nowadays, she's more famous for her private life and her romances than she is for film roles, but she has already amassed some iconic characters including orgasm-faking Sally Albright (When Harry Met Sally), Annie Reed (Sleepless in Seattle), Alice Green (When a Man Loves a Woman) and Kathleen Kelly (You've Got Mail).
Away from the big screen, she's a mum of two, the former wife of Dennis Quaid and rocker John Mellencamp's current squeeze.
And now she is turning 50 on Saturday, it's time to salute magical Meg.
Here's 10 things you may not have known about Ms. Ryan:
- She provided the voice for Russian royal Anastasia in the hit 1997 animated film about the Russian royal.
- She has played Kate, Catherine, Katharine or Kathleen in five movies, Maggie in three.
- Savage Garden's song All Around Me is a tribute to her, inspired by songwriter Daniel Jones' celebrity crush.
- She shares a birthday with Jodie Foster.
- She was offered the role of Clarice Starling in the movie The Silence of the Lambs, but the part eventually went to Jodie Foster.
- She has starred alongside Tom Hanks or ex-husband Dennis Quaid in six movies - Sleepless in Seattle, Joe Versus the Volcano, You've Got Mail, Innerspace, D.O.A and Flesh & Bone.
- Meg Ryan is an anagram of 'Germany'.
- She has played Candice Bergen's daughter twice, in Rich & Famous and The Women.
- She has an asteroid named after her - 8353 Megryan.
- She turned down two roles in romantic films that went on to become box office hits for Julia Roberts - Pretty Woman and Steel Magnolias. Meg also turned down the lead in Ghost.

Australian filmmaker Amiel Courtin-Wilson has made the leap from brilliant documentarian to visionary dramatic filmmaker, first with his short drama Cicada screening in competition at Cannes 2009 and now with his first dramatic feature Hail selected for Venice 2011. I've long thought of Amiel as the Werner Herzog of Australia, in the way he manages to extract deeply personal accounts or performances from his subjects, while enmeshing himself in the films themselves, not just as a behind-the-scenes auteur. Hail is no different, and sees Amiel collaborating again with ex-prison inmate turned actor Daniel Jones, who was the subject of and storyteller in the intense short Cicada, a dramatised monologue delivered direct to camera recounting Jones' first brutal memory as a child. Hail opens up the canvas, using Jones' life with...

Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s feature film Hail has been selected into the 68th Venice International Film Festival.
The film will screen in the festival’s Orizzonti section, focusing on ‘new and redefining world cinema’.
Courtin-Wilson, who wrote, directed and produced the film will attend with producing partner Michael Cody and male lead, Daniel Jones.
In a statement, Amiel Courtin-Wilson said, “It is truly humbling to be recognised and placed on the world stage of cinema in competition at the oldest film festival in the world – especially considering the festival’s relationship with past luminaries such as John Cassavetes, Mike Leigh and Robert Altman.”
Hail is the story of Dan, who on losing his love is reduced to savagery and violence. The story is the culmination of fiction and Jones’ real life as an ex-con. Jones and Courtin-Wilson first collaborated on Courtin-Wilson’s short film Cicada (2009) which screened at Cannes.
