Veteran actor and union leader Ken Howard became the first elected president of SAG-AFTRA Thursday. Amy Aquino, who was running with Howard on the Unite for Strength slate, was elected secretary treasurer. Both previously served the Screen Actors Guild for two consecutive terms prior to merger, and each served respectively as co-president and co-secretary-treasurer of SAG-AFTRA following the merger in 2012. Their two-year terms begin Thursday. The result was a landslide for Howard, whose closest challenger was Membership First's Esai Morales, who had promised to take on the casting industry and pay increased attention to background performers, who don't have a dedicated seat on the board. But his Los Angeles-focused campaign never really took off. In the end, Howard received 16,396 votes to 9,850 votes for Morales. The other challengers in the four-person field, Paul Edney and Marilyn Monrovia, received 1,359 and 960 votes respectively. In the secretary-treasurer contest Jane Austin, who was...

I look forward to joining the delegates who will assemble in Los Angeles for the first SAG-AFTRA convention in late September, and then moving forward with the new leadership team to do the important work that members have entrusted to us.

Hours before SAG-AFTRA unveiled its full candidate list, presidential candidate Paul Edney announced he's supporting rival Esai Morales for the union's top job. Morales is the best-known candidate in the field other than incumbent Ken Howard. With Edney's backing, it's now a three-way contest between Howard, Morales and Marilyn Monrovia, who continued to solicit support on Twitter after Edney's announcement. "Although I have spent a lot of time, effort and money on my campaign for National President of SAG-AFTRA, I do not wish to split the vote," Edney said in a statement posted on the MembershipFirst website July 12. "Esai Morales, a true unionist, shares the same desires and opinions as I do about union issues, especially Background Performers. I am honored to endorse Esai Morales for SAG-AFTRA President wholeheartedly. Although my name is on the Ballot, instead please vote for Esai Morales for SAG-AFTRA National President.

SAG-AFTRA unveiled the list of candidates running in its first post-merger national election, including a presidential field that features three challengers to Co-President Ken Howard. Paul Edney, Marilyn Monrovia and Esai Morales are vying to unseat Howard, who is seeking a third term at the helm. The candidates for national secretary-treasurer are Amy Aquino and Jane Austin, who is running on the MembershipFirst slate with Morales. The national president and secretary-treasurer positions both carry two-year terms. All national board seats are up for election this year, along with all local officer, local board and convention delegate positions. The executive vice president and other vice presidents will be elected at the inaugural SAG-AFTRA Convention in September. Roberta Reardon, currently the national co-president with Howard, has indicated she'll run for the executive vice president position. Meanwhile, she's challenging Mike Hodge for the presidency of the New York Local, SAG-AFTRA’s second largest.

SAG-AFTRA tonight put out the full list for its first National election since last year’s merger. With every single office in the national union in play, it is a big list. Partially because of that, SAG-AFTRA has not made clear affiliation to particular slates. In summary, the candidates for National President in alphabetical order are Paul Edney, Ken Howard, Marilyn Monrovia, and Esai Morales. And the candidates for National Secretary-Treasurer are Amy Aquino and Jane Austin.(See below or the 2013 SAG-aftra Candidate Elections webpage.) As previously announced, current SAG-AFTRA co-president Ken Howard is running for the solo National President spot. Even though he’s not part of the slate, Howard is endorsed and is endorsing the NY-based Usan offering, which includes current NY Local President Mike Hodge and Under The Dome’s Samantha Mathis among its candidates. Former NYPD Blue actor Esai Morales, a MembershipFirst anti-merger...
