1934 for his book, "The People's Choice". Served in the US Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of lieutenant-co9mmander.
His former wife, Eleanor Chilton (1898-1949), was a novelist, poet and playwright who wrote under the pen name Eleanor Carroll Chilton. She was the daughter of U.S. Sen. William E. Chilton of West Virginia.
