Even though the first few pages set up the world of Showside in an epic (with a touch of the mock epic in McGinty’s writing), first twenty minutes of Fellowship of the Ring way, most of Welcome to Showside #1 is the main character Kit, a red headed, mohawk sporting teenage monster, his friends Moon and Belle, and his non-verbal pet Boo hanging out and ending up on an adventure almost randomly. Writer/artist Ian McGinty throws readers headlong into this world, which visually is part Southern beach town and part 1980s adventure or fighting video game. (Think Crystal Castles meets Street Fighter, but with no annoying bear getting in the way.) His artwork is filled with the...

The power of friendship and redemption is victorious in Bravest Warriors #36, which is the final issue of Kate Leth and Ian McGinty’s excellent run on the series. In their sixteen issues on the title, they went beyond the cartoon’s mythos showing Catbug’s evil brother and father, giving Plum a lovely girlfriend named Peach, and homaging everything from Pacific Rim and Agatha Christie to The Great Gatsby and Lord of the Rings in a clever, silly manner. This final issue is a little low on suspense, but Leth and McGinty more than makes up for it by giving each Bravest Warrior a crowning moment of brilliance or funny, which play out in a character and plot twist.

In Bravest Warriors #35, writer Kate Leth and artist Ian McGinty gear up for the finale of their run by going to Catbug’s home planet? Yes, Catbug’s homeworld just happens to be in the belly of the same space shark as the Bravest Warriors and their spaceship. Leth and McGinty use this plot development to show a different side of Catbug’s psyche beneath his smiles, adorableness, and sassy side eye. Like a lot of people, he has issues with members of his family that get explored in a humorous, sometimes emotional way. Leth and McGinty use this spotlight on Catbug and his relationship with his relatives/fellow planet dwellers to add a new twist to what could be a conventional “put the...

Filled with techno-babble, expert or not so expert spaceship maneuvers from artist Ian McGinty, and Catbug non sequitur one-liner gold from writer Kate Leth, Bravest Warriors #34 is sadly the beginning of the final ride for this comic and creative team. Luckily, Leth, McGinty, and colorist Lisa Moore are going out space opera style as the Bravest Warriors travel to Plum and the merwif’s home planet of Mirvahda to save it from the Colossal Matter Shark or the not so sexy love child of Galactus and the space whales from Star Trek: The Voyage Home. Leth’s script is full of moral dilemmas and tension as the Warriors must make some tough choices in their battle against the Shark. But she offsets the space...

I’ve long maintained that of the many and various comics based on licensed properties, the Adventure Time publications are perhaps among those that best capture the spirit of the title on which they’re based. As well as its Adventure Time ongoing series, Kaboom! (who first publish the comics in the Us, before Titan release the collected editions over here in the UK) haven’t been particularly shy about dipping into the land of Ooo, with titles such as Banana Guard Academy, Flip Side and the recent and decent Marceline Gone Adrift being just a couple of examples. The cynical amongst you might look on this as cashing in on a highly lucrative brand, which is true to an extent, however when the levels of quality are as consistently high as these titles invariably are,...

Back from a summer camp, which ended up featuring an interdimensional eldritch being and Catbug’s evil brother, the Bravest Warriors are ready for some well-earned R and R. However, when they get back to their hideout, they are greeted by a sweet and disgusting sight. Plum reunites with her girlfriend Peach, but Danny’s beloved “toast goblin” Jelly Kid is dead. In Bravest Warriors #33, Kate Leth scripts an interactive closed room mystery story finding out which Warrior, ally, or random intruder killed Jelly Kid. There are three answers at the end of the comic (drawn by Adam Del Re, Kat Leyh, and Leth’s Fraggle Rock collaborator), but most of the fun is figuring out the “killer” yourself. Then, this issue of Munchkin might be what sci-fi fans are looking for as writer Tom Siddell and Ian McGinty skewer both post-apocalyptic and time travel fiction in the aptly named “12 Munchkies”. Munchkin #5 follows the adventures of an unnamed, mohawk sporting hero, who is sent back in time by a shady group of people to find out why humanity went underground. Bravest Warriors #32 gets the whole team involve as they battle the extradimensional terror Akrothile, who was unintentionally summoned by the disgruntled summer camper Arthen. There is also the ongoing threat of Bugcat, who is trapped from his home dimension thanks to the valiant efforts of Catbug in an earlier issue. Kate Leth and Ian McGinty balance big action with character moments in this arc concluding issue along with some great comedy from Catbug.
The piece de resistance of McGinty’s art is a double page “maze” spread, which help keeps the various battles in order. (There is also a capture the flag game happening.) This weekend at East Coast Comicon, I had the pleasure of interviewing artist Ian McGinty aka the guy who draws Catbug for a living. We talked about his work on Bravest Warriors as well as some other projects for Boom! Studios, like Munchkin and Bill and Ted’s Most Triumphant Return and even a future animation project. McGinty has been drawing Bravest Warriors for almost a year with writer Kate Leth (Edward Scissorhands), and has co-created a couple new characters, including Bugcat (evil Catbug) and Peach, who can build giant robots and has a romantic relationship with the Bravest Warrior Plum.
Sound on Sight: My first question is what initially drew you to Bravest Warriors as a creator and fan?
Ian McGinty: Kate and I were both fans before we even knew the comic existed. I used to watch it all the time, and then I did some covers for Boom!

Bill and Ted’s Most Triumphant Return #2
Written by Brian Lynch and Ryan North
Art by Jerry Gaylord and Ian McGinty
Publisher Boom! Studios
Are you ready to have the most righteous adventure? In Bill’s and Ted’s Most Triumphant Return # 2, Bill and Ted work with Chuck, their would-be murderer, to improve Chuck’s life by getting him friends and a girlfriend. The comic delivers a fair time with spot on characters depiction, tender and deep character moments, and humorous artwork. However, the comic does not come without its flaws in iplot and characters. If you are willing to endure these imperfections, then Bill and Ted will provide you with a fair and funny time.
Lynch show the main characters of Bill, Ted, and Chuck with care and attention to detail. Bill and Ted continue to rock their rad attitudes from the film and keep a genuine desire to be friendly and cool.

In recent years, comics conventions have become less about the comics creators, who crafted (and continue to craft) the characters beloved by pop culture and more about celebrity guests. Yes, it is fun to get a picture made with your favorite Star Trek captain or Doctor Who companion, but from my personal experience as well as that of con-goers and the crowded nature of big shows like San Diego and New York Comic Con, it seems like the comics have been pushed aside for “geek culture” celebrities. Some conventions might as well take out the “comic” in “comic con”. However, some shows continue to put comics and creators first, and one of them is East Coast Comicon.
East Coast Comicon began as Asbury Park Comic Con and was held in 2012 at a converted bowling alley/rock club in Asbury Park, NJ. It was founded by independent comics creator Cliff Galbraith...

It was recently announced that Bill & Ted would be making a triumphant return in comic book form. The comic will be called Wyld Stallyns, and thanks to the Nerdist, today we have the first art and details surrounding the project.
The comic will run for six issues, and it comes from writers Brian Lynch (Puss in Boots) and artists Jerry Gaylord and Ian McGinty. I know we all would rather see a third movie, but at least William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq., and Theodore “Ted” Logan will be back in a new adventure! The comic will be released in March 2015.
Here are the details from the publisher, Boom! Studios:
Why We Love It: Similar to our Big Trouble in Little China comics, we’re returning readers to one of our favorite—and most excellent—cult-classic properties with a new Bill & Ted adventure of epic proportions. And because we’re fans first,...

Boom! Studios has announced a new Bill & Ted comic miniseries.
Writers Brian Lynch and Ryan North will be joined by artists Jerry Gaylord and Ian McGinty for the six-issue Bill & Ted's Most Triumphant Return series, reports Nerdist.
"Following the time-travelling historic epic of Excellent Adventure and the turbulent life and death of Bogus Journey, Bill and Ted must now fulfil their destiny as the inspiration for galactic harmony," reads the solicitation.
"How can someone hate the Wyld Stallyns as much as the evil Chuck De Nomolos? With the power of time travel, Bill and Ted set their sights on turning a young 27th century Nomolos's non-non-heinous attitude into something most outstanding and metal."
Lynch and Gaylord will be working on the main story with backups by North and McGinty.
Boom! released a Wyld Stallyns teaser earlier in the week.
A third Bill & Ted film is currently in development.

In Bravest Warriors #25, Kate Leth and Ian McGinty take a break from their ongoing storyline to add depth to Catbug’s mythos and introduce a new character, Bugcat. Bugcat is a palette swapped version of Catbug, who has his mischievousness, but lacks his cute charm and sense of humor. Leth and McGinty give Catbug some time on his own and show what he gets up to when he’s not being adorable around the Bravest Warriors. Leth delves into Catbug’s emotional life and reveals that he does have the true makings of a hero even if he killed Jelly Kid and completely failed at leadership in “Catbug’s Away Team”. Ian McGinty has a deft touch with facial expressions and reaction panels in the opening scene which features an ersatz version of Cards Against Humanity,...

With the success of Kaboom’s Adventure Time! comics and all its subsequent spin-offs, it’s no surprise that Kaboom is treating us to yet another At! spin-off. But while the other stories may tread familiar waters, Adventure Time: Candy Capers takes a unique approach to the successful franchise. Forget the fact that the book serves as an homage to the hard-boiled detective stories of the past, the fact that this book stars Ooo’s most super evil citizen, Peppermint Butler, is enough to make fan boys salivate.
