Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed Charlie Tahan, the actor, writer, and director best known for his breakout starring role on Netflix’s Ozark, for management.
For a refresher, the Emmy-winning Ozark follows the seemingly ordinary financial planner, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), who becomes entangled in a dangerous world of money laundering and drug cartels. When a scheme goes awry, he’s forced to relocate his family from Chicago to the remote Ozarks in Missouri to launder money for a cartel, working to outmaneuver local criminals, corrupt officials, and his own fractured family dynamics.
Tahan’s character is Wyatt Langmore — cousin of Julia Garner’s Ruth — a member of a local crime family who proves an intelligent and introspective fan favorite, in spite of his troubled upbringing. His work as part of the ensemble earned him three SAG Award nominations between 2019 and 2023.

Exclusive: Veteran Saw cast member Shawnee Smith is circling the newest installment in the billion-dollar horror franchise from Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures, which is currently in production in Mexico City, Deadline hears.
While the studio declined to comment on Smith’s casting, we understand that it has continued to expand its cast for the tenth Saw film following the closing of deals for Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Brand (The Sandman) and Michael Beach (Dahmer). Then, there’s horror icon Tobin Bell, who will return for another go-round as Jigsaw Killer John Kramer, as previously announced.
Details as to the plot of the new film are under wraps, though we know that franchise veteran Kevin Greuter — who helmed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, and edited Saw I through V and Jigsaw — has returned as director. While there’s no word yet on the characters to be played by Lund,...

Exclusive: Emmy and Golden Globe winner Edie Falco has reteamed with her Nurse Jackie director Brendan Walsh on I’ll Be Right There — an indie comedy written by Jim Beggarly (Free Samples), which has wrapped production in New York.
Others set to star in the pic include Oscar nominee Jeannie Berlin (The Fabelmans), Charlie Tahan (Ozark), Independent Spirit Award nominee Kayli Carter (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Michael Rapaport (Only Murders in the Building), Michael Beach (Dahmer), Sepideh Moafi (Black Bird) and Emmy winner Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale).
I’ll Be Right There follows a single mother, Wanda (Falco), who has her hands full to say the least: her eight month pregnant daughter (Carter) wants a wedding, her mother (Berlin) thinks she’s dying, her wayward son (Tahan) is either going into rehab or the army, and she barely has time for herself, not that she would know what to do with it anyway.

This past weekend, we had a trio of films that were released on a variety of platforms and streaming services: the survival horror film Centigrade, Mj Bassett’s latest action-centric project, Rogue, and Get Duked!, a wonderfully off-beat horror comedy from first-time feature director Ninian Doff. Here’s a look at my thoughts on this diverse trio of films that you can currently check out for yourself, all from the comfort of your own home (Centigrade is also currently playing in select drive-in theaters).
Centigrade: As a huge fan of tales of survival horror, Brendan Walsh’s Centigrade turned me into a tension-filled mess, and as the film progressed, I only got increasingly more and more stressed out for the film’s characters and their terrifying predicament. One car, one couple, 90 minutes.
That’s the premise behind “Centigrade,” the most claustrophobic film imaginable—the entire movie is set inside a car beneath five feet of snow, and it plays like a mashup between “Buried” and “The Ice Storm.” But whereas those films are high-concept, yet tightly controlled, writer-director Brendan Walsh throws all restraint out the window for his new film. Secrets? A stabbing?

Cold Comfort Car: Walsh Gets Wound Up in Perfunctory Trauma Reenactment
Survival thrillers which reenact harrowing experiences documented by those who lived through unthinkable trauma initially seem impervious to criticism. They are accounts, after all, ‘based on true events,’ and regardless of whether they’re sensationalized, exaggerated or outright fabricated for dramatic effect, there’s usually the remaining kernel of integrity which mainlines necessary universality.
For his directorial debut, Brendan Walsh and first-time screenwriter Daley Nixon tackle a 2002 account of an American couple traveling in Norway who pull over during a snowstorm to awaken hours later trapped in their frozen SUV, where they remain buried for a month.…...

An SUV becomes a deadly prison when a snowstorm submerges a young couple on the side of the road in the new movie Centigrade, with the expectant mother and father-to-be battling not only the elements, but their trust in each other, too.
On this special episode of Corpse Club, Heather Wixson is joined by Centigrade director/co-writer Brendan Walsh to discuss his new survival thriller, which is out now from IFC Midnight. Listen as Brendan takes a deep dive into the very real fears of his film, from its harrowing real-life inspiration and unsettling portrayal of harsh arctic elements to the challenges of making a movie in the claustrophobic confines of a vehicle and the powerful performances by Vincent Piazza and Genesis Rodriguez.
A prolific assistant director before helming Centigrade, Brendan also reflects on his memorable time working as a second assistant director on the set of Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler.

Even though the new thriller, Centigrade, is beset by a few issues that prevent it from being a truly great entry to the genre, it is still a tremendously effective exploration of the effects a fight for survival has on a relationship that perhaps is not as strong as was initially thought.
The scene is set somewhat simplistically as a young American couple, Matthew (Vincent Piazza) and pregnant Naomi (Genesis Rodriguez) wake up after spending the night on the side of the road in the arctic Norwegian mountains after pulling over to rest as the weather grew more treacherous and their ability to drive safely became even more unlikely. Unfortunately, although they are rested, the vehicle has been entombed by a layer of ice that they are unable to penetrate. With very little in the way of resources to assist them in surviving this startling situation, they begin a battle...

You’ll forgive director Brendan Walsh for wanting to have it both ways. “Centigrade,” the filmmaker’s feature debut — he wrote it alongside Daley Nixon, also a feature filmmaking newbie — opens with a pair of title cards that happily play into the tease that what follows is all real, or at least real enough to lend it all a little spice. First, we’re told, “In 2002, an American novelist and her husband traveled to Norway on a small book tour,” followed by the kicker, “What follows is inspired by actual events.” No, “Centigrade” itself is not a true story — certainly not the teased one about the American novelist and her husband — but it is inspired by real stories like it, and if Walsh is trying to have some fun blending fact and fiction, worse things have certainly happened in the genre space.

The risk with making a movie involving characters confined in a small space is that the audience can wind up feeling more claustrophobia than suspense. Such turns out to be the case with Brendan Walsh’s directorial debut, about a couple trapped in a car during a blizzard. Neither tense nor thematically resonant enough to overcome its literally small-scale aspects, Centigrade proves as much an ordeal for its viewers as its characters.
Supposedly “inspired by real events,” the film wastes no time establishing its premise. It begins with married couple Matthew (Vincent Piazza, Boardwalk Empire) and Naomi (Genesis Rodriguez,...

In 1998, the brilliant marketing campaign for “The Blair Witch Project” nearly broke the still-fledgling commercial internet, peppering it with hints and rumors and worries that the found-footage thriller was actually real, forever changing movie marketing in the process. Over two decades later, it’s still a stroke of genius worthy of being imitated, and even if consumers are far too hip to believe all this mumbo-jumbo again (or are they?), few things are as amusing as watching the lines between “film” and “reality” blur.
Enter Brendan Walsh’s IFC Midnight thriller “Centigrade,” which adds a (literally) chilling dimension to a genre still pushing its boundaries. The film’s official synopsis plays up the “Blair Witch Project” of it all: “In 2002, a young American couple, Matthew and Naomi travel to the arctic mountains of Norway. After pulling over during a snowstorm, they wake up trapped in their SUV, buried underneath layers of snow and Ice.

When thinking about the worst ways to die, a few options pop to the top of the mind, including but not limited to drowning, something elevator-related, or any of the setpieces from Final Destination. Getting trapped in your car during a blizzard? It’s another awful way to go, and it’s the premise for director Brendan Walsh’s debut feature Centigrade, a snappy horror-thriller based on true events from IFC Midnight.
Written by Walsh and Daley Nixon, the film exists inside of the tiny vehicle of a couple, Matt (Vincent Piazza) and Naomi (Genesis Rodriguez), as they wake up after pulling off the road and falling asleep in the middle of the night in a Norway mountain range. Within the car, which contains a minimal amount of food and water, the couple (including a pregnant Naomi) disagree on attempting to escape or bunkering down, and secrets and lies start...

Imagine for a moment that you're on a road trip when a blizzard hits. You pull over to wait it out but soon find yourself buried in feet of snow and you can't get out. Now you have to find some way to survive until you can get rescued. This is the premise of Centigrade.
The film is based on a real-life 2002 incident in which an American couple travelled to the arctic mountains of Norway and after pulling over during a snowstorm, woke up to find themselves trapped in their SUV, buried underneath layers of snow and ice. It's not clear how much writer/director Brendan Walsh's movie takes from the real-life story beyond the buried in snow scenario but the film, a two-hander starring Genesis Rodriguez and Vincent Piazza, certainly appears to ratchet tension and drama.

"We don't know what's out there." IFC Films has debuted the official US trailer for Centigrade, a snowy, extra cold survival thriller based on a true story from 2002. A young American couple travel to the arctic mountains of Norway. After pulling over during a snowstorm, they wake up trapped in their SUV, buried underneath layers of snow and ice. In addition to the woman being pregnant, they must battle -30° Celsius temperatures, hallucinations, and hypothermia in their struggle to survive. Starring Genesis Rodriguez and Vincent Piazza as the couple. This looks like a cross between Arctic and Buried, not only dealing with being stuck in a car but also the freezing cold temperature and unending snow. Looks quite chilling indeed. The world needs a lot of things right now, and one of them just happens to be easygoing entertainment. So be grateful for “Banana Split,” a charming teen romance that fits neatly into the era of “Booksmart” but also manages to stand solidly on its own.
Cowriter Hannah Marks (“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency”) also stars as April, a high-school senior in a long-term relationship with dim hottie Nick (Dylan Sprouse). Marks, cowriter Joey Power and director Benjamin Kasulke spend about five minutes introducing, capturing and ending this relationship, in a quick but clever montage that both fills us in and keeps us at a distance.
That detachment does leave a nagging hole in the story, because we never have the chance to become invested in this couple. But it’s also a purposeful choice: It soon becomes clear that the filmmakers have something other than romance in mind.

An associate producer for stomach-churning brutal beatings filled The Killer Inside Me by Michael Winterbottom, Subkoff has been taking “stabs” at directing — her creative juices are on display (see short below) with performance pieces including a project called Future/Perfect (2013), with Milla Jovovich, for the 55th Venice Biennale.

Robin Williams was found dead in California today (Aug. 11) at the age 63. Friends, entertainers, the rest of Hollywood and beyond have take to Twitter to celebrate the comedian's life, to grieve, and to react to his unexpected death. Steven Spielberg's public statement: “Robin was a lightning storm of comic genius and our laughter was the thunder that sustained him. He was a pal and I can’t believe he’s gone.” Garry Marshall's public statement: “Robin was hands-down a comedy genius and one of the most talented performers I have ever worked with in television or film. To lose him so young at the age of 63 is just a tragedy. I will forever be in awe of his timing, his talent and his pure and golden creativity… He was my friend and it is rare that you ever have a friend that is also a genius.” Bob Iger,...

The fest opens on the 20th with the documentary More Than the Rainbow, a profile of Matt Weber, an NYC cab driver who moonlights as an art photographer. The film is directed by Dan Wechsler.
Other docs screening at the fest include the uplifting tale of A Clown’s Recovery, directed by Matthew Broomfield; the sports drama of One Wall: Kings of Coney Island, directed by Joe Glickman; the profile of a Coney Island legend in The Commander in Chief, directed by Jim McDonnell; the struggle of Bending Steel, directed by Dave Carroll; and World Circus, directed by Angela Snow.

In an historic win, Kathryn Bigelow and her tense Iraq War drama "The Hurt Locker" from Summit Entertainment copped the DGA Award for best-directed feature film Saturday.
The win drew cheers from a packed ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, where throughout the night it was clear many were pulling for Bigelow to deliver a dramatic victory for female filmmakers. The DGA feature film win was a first-ever by a woman.
"This is the most incredible moment of my life," Bigelow said.
Bigelow overcame competition including Fox-distributed "Avatar," directed by her ex-husband James Cameron; Lee Daniels and "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" from Lionsgate; Jason Reitman and "Up in the Air" from Paramount; and Quentin Tarantino and "Inglourious Basterds" from the Weinstein Co.
