Exclusive: A day after 89-year old iconic South Boston mob boss James (Whitey) Bulger was beaten to death — his face reportedly pummeled beyond recognition by prisoners with mob ties and a grudge — in a West Virginia prison, I asked Scott Cooper how he would script Bulger’s headstone.
While several major movies and TV productions were built around composites of Bulger – Jack Nicholson’s performance in Best Picture winner The Departed and the James Woods arc in Ray Donovan come to mind — Cooper was the one who actually took the elusive subject head on when he wrote and directed Black Mass and cast Johnny Depp to play the feared mobster and FBI informant who held South Boston in his iron grip and enjoyed a second act by hiding from authorities nearly two decades as the second Most Wanted Fugitive behind Osama Bin Laden after being tipped to an imminent indictment for his role in 19 murders.

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"The Martian"
Unfortunately, the poster on this one was misleading -- they never actually let us bring Matt Damon home after seeing the movie. (His wife would probably disapprove.) You can, however, take home Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars mission movie "The Martian" on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 12. The Blu-ray editions include more than 90 minutes of special features, including five "in-world" pieces, and featurettes from the cast, director, and producers. There's also a gag reel, which should be fun.
"Hotel Transylvania 2"
Drac's Pack is back in the sequel to "Hotel Transylvania," as they put the son of Mavis and Johnny through a "monster-in-training" boot camp to bring out his vampire side. The DVD, out January 12, includes feature commentary with the director and vocal cast,...

Lawyer for Whitey Bulger, the gangster immortalised on screen by Depp, says actor ‘might as well have been playing the Mad Hatter again’ for all his client’s interest, while enforcer Kevin Weeks questions film’s failure to mention FBI complicity
It’s been hailed as a major return to form for Johnny Depp and a potential contender for the 2016 Oscars. But the two men whose murderous activities form the basis of gangster drama Black Mass have dismissed the film as an inconsequential fantasy.
Whitey Bulger, the brutal mobster and FBI informant portrayed by Depp in Scott Cooper’s critically acclaimed movie, has not seen the festival season smash because he is currently serving back-to-back life sentences for complicity in 11 murders and other criminal activities between 1971 and 1994. The former head of the South Boston Winter Hill gang reportedly refused to discuss his life with the actor, and according to his lawyer Hank Brennan,...

This weekend, Johnny Depp rages into multiplexes as the famous and feared gangster Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass." But no kingpin gets to the top without a little help, and for the Boston crime lord, that came in the shape of Kevin Weeks, played all too briefly in the film by Jesse Plemons. And while it's easy to get romantic about mob life, this fascinating podcast with the real Weeks is a great listen about the inner workings of the life. Read More: Review: Gangster Tale 'Black Mass' Starring Johnny Depp Doesn't Go Deep Enough Ron Rosenbaum of Holding Court, who has known Weeks for decades, got Bulger's right-hand man on the phone to talk about the community of South Boston and his time running with Whitey. Weeks is an open book, answering questions about the various stories and legends that flew around, and what it was like to live during the era.

Hit the deck! Rat-a-tat-tat!! These are the sounds of a cinema staple, the gangster genre. From the early silent days, “thugs with dirty mugs” were the source of many a “hit” at the box office, of course. Soon after the Brothers Warner began their studio, they quickly became the premiere producers of these “blood and thunder” morality plays, featuring a “murderers’ row” of movie icons headed by James Cagney, Edward G Robertson, and Humphrey Bogart. In the waning years of Hollywood’s Golden Age, these thrillers often merged with the biography genre with the stories of real-life 20’s and 30’s criminals like John Dillinger, Bonnie Parker, and Clyde Barrow, and, the big man himself, “Scarface” Al Capone. With the phenomenal success of The Godfather, these “public enemies” were back in vogue, continuing even to this day. Now the Warners are back in the true tale gangster biz, but they’re...

Telluride – For most moviegoers the new drama “Black Mass” will feel inherently familiar, and the reason is obvious. The story of notorious Boston crime lord Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) and the FBI agent who essentially protected him, John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), inspired Martin Scorsese’s 2007 Oscar-winning drama ‘The Departed.” The difference between the pictures is that “Mass” notably fleshes the story out with distinct historical detail that film lacked. Yet, with a number of high-profile crime thrillers set in Boston over the past eight years “Mass” has to rely on Johnny Depp’s inspired portrayal of Bulger and a strong ensemble to truly captivate. There are worse problems to have. Set mostly in the ‘70s and ‘80s, “Mass” starts off by attempting to frame Bulger’s rise to prominence through the plea bargained testimony of his notorious Irish-American Winter Hill gang, namely Kevin Weeks (Jesse Plemons) who went from...

It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a decent real-life career criminal to ogle over in the media. It seems the days of Al Capone, Dillinger and Bonnie & Clyde have long since passed. Since then, we’ve had plenty of fictional films to fill in the void, but even The Godfather and Scarface stop short of the infamous “based on a true story” appeal that gets us truly salivating.
Whitey: Unites States Of America Vs. James J. Bulger is a film that perhaps attempts to fill this void. This is not the story of the rise of a criminal empire, but the complicated and calculated decline of a lone wolf. This film indirectly chronicles the trial of James J. Bulger, a ruthless criminal loose cannon who ruled Boston with an iron first for some three decades. I say indirectly, because the film deals more directly with the...

There probably hadn’t been such a titan of organized crime since the heyday of 1930s prohibition and the days of Al Capone. In Boston though, the name James J. Bulger was hardly one with a lot of sentimental nostalgia attached, but rather it conjured images of fear and violence in South Boston, conditions that police and law enforcement at all levels of government seemed powerless to stop. Of course, we know how the story ends, and Bulger, Aka: Whitey, was arrested after nearly 20 years on the lam, tried, convicted and sentenced on multiple counts of murder, conspiracy, extortion and drug trafficking. But how did everyone let Whitey get away with so much for so long?
Acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost) directs Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger and does so by covering a lot of ground in the origins, career, and downfall of Boston’s most notorious gangster.

(Cbr) There’s good news, and potentially bad news, for Jesse Plemons fans today. Let’s start with the good. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the "Breaking Bad" and "Friday Night Lights" veteran has been cast in a new project opposite Johnny Depp: "Black Mass", the biopic about South Boston crime legend Whitey Bulger. Plemons will play a blue-collar thug named Kevin Weeks, part of Bulger’s inner-circle. But here’s the rub: Does "Black Mass" mean Plemons won’t be in "Star Wars: Episode VII", as has been rumored over the past several weeks? The Warner Bros. gangster pic is expected to begin production in May, the same month that "Star Wars" is supposed to start shooting. On top of that, there’s this line from THR’s article on Plemons’ "Black Mass" casting: “He was one of the actors who had some meetings for a role in...
