A Manhattan judge abruptly dismissed a criminal case against three men accused of stealing dozens of pages of handwritten lyrics to Eagles hits including “Hotel California” after concluding that band member Don Henley “manipulated” prosecutors by withholding evidence.
Three men — Glenn Horowitz, a rare book dealer; Craig Inciardi, a curator at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; and Edward Kosinski, a memorabilia auctioneer — were all charged in 2022 with conspiracy over accusations that they had illegally obtained over 100 pages of lyrics from Henley.
The defendants maintained that they had legally obtained the lyric sheets from author Ed Sanders, who was hired in the 1970s to write a book about the Eagles.
During a hearing on Wednesday (via Billboard), Justice Curtis Farber revealed that Henley recently handed over more than 6,000 pages of emails and other notes that lent credence to the defense’s claims that Sanders had legitimately come into possession of Henley’s lyrics.

Prosecutors in the trial involving handwritten lyrics from the Eagles’ 1976 classic Hotel California dismissed the case on Wednesday in a surprise decision that seemingly puts an end to one of the more unusual music-related criminal trials in recent years.
In the criminal case, three men were accused of conspiring to possess stolen property. That property in question was over 100 pages of drafts of songs from the Eagles’ landmark album, written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. The trial was heading into its third week on Wednesday when, in a letter to Judge Curtis Farber,...

“I’m losing my voice,” Don Henley said in New York Supreme Court on Wednesday. No surprise: The 76-year-old leader of the Eagles was wrapping up his third day of testimony in a case involving allegedly stolen pads containing developmental lyrics for Eagles songs.
After being handed a lozenge by one of the prosecutors in the case, Henley resumed answering questions about the pads, a 1979 contract between the band and writer Ed Sanders (who was writing an authorized biography of the group), and other matters from his past. In the case,...

Seated at a witness stand in Manhattan court on Monday, Don Henley was doing his best to contain himself and what he was feeling. But every so often, the boldface-name witness in a trial involving allegedly stolen handwritten lyrics to songs from the Eagles’ Hotel California couldn’t help himself.
Take the moment Henley was asked if he recalled sending legal pads with lyric drafts to writer Ed Sanders for research of the group’s planned Eagles biography more than 40 years ago. “I don’t recall offering to send him lyric pads,...

It took three days, but one of the stars of the case involving allegedly stolen handwritten lyrics from the Eagles’ Hotel California album emerged Friday. And it wasn’t Don Henley or any of the other band members over the decades: It was paper.
On Friday, glimpses of the yellow pads with in-progress lyrics from the album’s title track were shown during testimony by Tom Lecky, a former manuscripts executive at the auction house Christie’s. The photos, taken for a Christie’s listing that never went up, showed one...

Based on the works of journalist Maury Terry, Netflix's The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness looks beyond David Berkowitz for the shooting murders that unfolded from 1976 to 1977 in New York City. Per the title, Terry's theory was that there wasn't just one Son of Sam, but multiple. Ultimately, Terry believed that the so-called Sons of Sam could be traced back to a cult called The Children, which was connected to the likes of Scientology and Charles Manson's Family. But how did that connection come about? Here's what you need to know.
While looking into Berkowitz, Terry connected him to John and Michael Carr, brothers who were literally sons to a man named Sam. The journalist strongly believed that these brothers were involved in the Sons of Sam killings and looked further into their past connections. He found that the siblings had been linked to the Church of Scientology in their past.

I believe the first comics convention I attended was in 1967. That means I’ve been chasing these puppies for 50 years. Indeed, it often feels my entire life has been one long, never-ending comicon. Talk about getting a life – or, at least, another act.
I continue to do ‘em because I enjoy seeing my friends a hell of a lot more than I enjoy eating vulcanized chicken fingers. Better still, I enjoy meeting the fans, talking about what they like and don’t like (this is not a good time to defend the event comic), discovering new trends and talent, and blathering on and on at panels. For the past, oh, maybe two dozen years that means I’ve vastly preferred the smaller comicons; it’s hard to have meaningful conversations at the overcrowded, underoxygenated megashows such as San Diego and New York. To tell you the truth, I avoid those...

“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes,” Andy Warhol famously said, but the legendary artist probably didn’t expect that such a sentiment would apply to his own screen tests, which have endured over the decades as a curious, intimate look at the inner workings of his creative process.
Filmed during the ’60s-era heyday of his Warhol Factory, the black and white screen tests feature a slew of Warhol regulars — from Ondine to Edie Sedgwick, Lou Reed to Bob Dylan — and other famous faces of the day, all lensed on Warhol’s own Bolex camera. Nearly 500 of the screen tests were filmed, though Warhol did not use or exhibit all of them. Favorites were arranged into various compilations that were then screened by Warhol for assorted audiences, though they’ve continued to inspire and delight fans for decades past their original filming.

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith plays Charles Manson in the crime drama, Charlie Says.
Charlie Says is one of two upcoming films to chronicle the historical homicidal Manson Family and its namesake, Charles Manson – whether or not that’s a good thing remains to be seen. While the oxygen in the proverbial Manson movie room will be hogged this summer by Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded cinematic release, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, another offering is getting the jump on things, this May’s Charlie Says, in which the former bow-tie-brandishing wielder of all things timey-wimey, former Eleventh Doctor Who, Matt Smith, will play the stabby Svengali.
The creative team behind American Psycho takes on another psychotic episode of Americana, the aftermath of the Charles Manson family murders. Charlie Says was directed by former punk rock journalist Mary Harron, who also directed the 1996 film I Shot Andy Warhol.

In an attempt to make Glass seem even a little bit hip or cool, Google is launching a set of music-related applications for the wearable technology. Wearers will now be able to verbally ask the glasses to search for songs, scroll through playlists, and play music via Play, Google’s media hub that’s still not iTunes. Glass wearers are already able to identify songs playing nearby with Sound Search, a program similar to Shazam or SoundHound. Ed Sanders, director of marketing for Google Glass, says the new features are perfect whether you’re a “classical music professor, an acclaimed ...

We’ve watched them pilot stunt planes and a sail pirate ship, brew some beer and assemble a train, drive like maniacs and down some trees. Having lived to tell the tale through all of it, Marcus Hunt and Ed Sanders, stars of AMC’s Owners Manual head into tonight’s season finale with a bang … and a coaster. Those of you considering ditching your 9-to-5, desk jockey day job and running away with the carnival will especially want to tune in to the two-part finale’s first episode, in which instructional-material devotee Hunt and freestyler Sanders sign on with California’s Christiansen Amusements [...]

Directionally Challenged: Comic cohorts Ed Sanders and Marcus Hunt follow the instructions — or don’t — in one seriously adventurous Owner’s Manual on AMC. In my house, we have an entire drawer filled with instruction manuals for every single object that has crossed the threshold since we moved in. Probably many things that have since crossed back out, as well. My husband is as wedded to these booklets as he is to me, but I just can’t be bothered. Recognizing the universal nature of this “to read or not to read” conundrum, AMC created the new unscripted series Owner’s Manual, [...]

Ablene Cooper, a 60-year-old woman and long-time employee for Kathryn Stockett’s brother and sister-in-law, who she has helped raise two children for, has filed a lawsuit against Ms Stockett, who, by the way, is the the author of the best-selling novel, The Help, currently being adapted into a feature film with Viola Davis starring.
Ms. Cooper’s lawsuit argues that one of the novel’s main characters, Aibileen Clark (the character Viola Davis plays in the film), is “an unpermitted appropriation of her name and image, which she finds emotionally distressing,” according to the New York Times; and allegedly requested, before the book was published, that the author not to use her name and likeness.
“Ain’t too many Ablenes… What she did, they said it was wrong… They came to me and said, ‘Ms Abie, we love you, we support you,’ and they told me to do what I got to do,...

True Blood fans hoping to see more of Ryan Kwanten (with his native Australian accent and his shirt on), are in luck: This Friday, his new movie, the modern-day Western Red Hill, opens in New York, Los Angeles, and Austin, with additional markets to follow. Kwanten stars as a young police officer named Shane Cooper who relocates to the remote Aussie outpost Red Hill with his pregnant wife (Claire van der Boom) for a less stressful life. Cue Jimmy Conway (Tom E. Lewis), a convicted wife killer, escaping from prison on Shane’s first day with one goal in mind:...

Using the momentum from his breakthrough role as Jason Stackhouse in HBO's sexy vampire series "True Blood", actor Ryan Kwanten is making a big move into feature films. Though he's had roles in junk like Dead Silence and Flicka, recently Kwanten voiced a character in The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and has the epic action comedy The Knights of Badassdom in his future. Now ShockTillYouDrop reports the actor will play a young Charles Manson in The Family, an adaptation of Ed Sanders revealing book of the same name which centers on the wayward teens who would become the twisted Manson family. Writer Scott Kosar (The Machinist, The Crazies) will make the indie drama his directorial debut and is adamant that the film is not solely about the infamous Manson murders or simply a Charles Manson biopic. Kosar, who also wrote the script himself, elaborates on his...

A scheduling glitch created the following conundrum: Best Generation poet and Allen Ginsberg's longtime mate, Peter Orlovsky, who died in June, was remembered on Wednesday at St. Mark's Church. Meanwhile the New York premiere of "Howl," the new movie starring James Franco with Peter (Aaron Tveit) in a small role took place a few blocks across town at the IFC Center. Having filled the prestigious slot of opening night film at this year's Sundance Film Festival, the anticipation was high for this movie: part animation, part courtroom drama, part period piece about the creation of the iconic beat poem and the censorship trial for obscenity that followed its 1956 City Lights publication. An event in beat style, the memorial featured performances by Patti Smith, Philip Glass, Gordon Ball, Bob Rosenthal, Hal Willner, Simon Pettet, Rosebud Pettet, Ed Sanders and anecdotes remembering...

Tuli Kupferberg is better off dead. My friend and counter-cultural icon had been suffering from a couple of strokes, hospitals, breathing tubes, feeding tubes, anemia, infections, blindness, catheter, hearing aids, wheelchairs, psychosis, memory loss, diapers, constipation, anti-depressants, sleeping pills, fatigue and a chronically bed-ridden life that seemed to be no life worth living. Tuli was a dedicated truthseeker, and I'd like to honor that quality with a couple of truths. There was a rumor that Philip Roth had lifted the onanistically obsessed idea for Portnoy's Complaint from a song by the Fugs -- a band on the cusp of rock and punk, named after Norman Mailer's euphemism for fuck in The Naked and the Dead -- but this notion was disavowed by Fugs leader Ed Sanders, who assured me, "Philip Roth did not plagiarize a Fugs song. He came to a Fugs show...

Fugs co-founder Tuli Kupferberg, a social and political provocateur for decades, died yesterday at the age of 86. The longtime downtown-Manhattan resident, whose wife, Sylvia Topp, is a freelance copy editor for Vanity Fair and a writer, started out as a jazz-loving Beat poet but became best known for the underground group he formed with his friend Ed Sanders, then the owner of a Village bookstore, in 1965. Proto-punks, the largely untrained Fugs—whose name Kupferberg derived from Norman Mailer’s substitution (under pressure) for “fuck” in The Naked and the Dead—played their often ribald songs with exuberant abandon; they were a staple at anti-war protests, performing such songs as “Kill for Peace.” “We vowed to live from our art, to have fun and party continuously, and to get our brains on tape,” Sanders has written on the band’s Web site. With that vow, Kupferberg, then in his 40s, paved...

In the world of strange bedfellows, YouTube and the Guggenheim would surely be the couple most likely to take the cake. Yet the museum has turned to the video-hosting site to source its creative talent for ¡ts forthcoming biennale of video art, with YouTube Play.
[youtube Y6a3T6O4SQU]
The two institutions, alongside collaborator Hp, are hoping to "elevate the debate" about what people can do with video. There are no limitations on content--from documentaries, to stop-motion, animation and music videos--in short, just about anything that will fill a YouTube screen, and the 20 finalists will be shown at the Guggenheim in New York, as well as its outposts in Berlin, Bilbao and Venice.

Even YouTube's senior marketing manager, Ed Sanders, admits that the shack-up is "slightly unusual on paper", but is adamant that the website is partially behind the recent explosion in creative video. "Much of this is driven by the growth of sites...
