Last night, the 25th annual Gotham Awards held their ceremony in New York City and made an early claim to setting the precursor tone. As often the first group to not only put out nominations but announce their winners, they more or less can establish very early frontrunners when the titles in contention are already Oscar hopefuls. That’s the case this year, as films like Carol, Grandma, I’ll See You in My Dreams, Love & Mercy, Room, and Spotlight were already Academy Award players. Spotlight turned out to be the main victor last night, winning in every category it was nominated in, so if you believe in momentum, the early momentum decidedly favors it, with other precursors still to come this week, and even later on today. The big winner, of course, was Spotlight, as the movie took Best Feature, Best Screenplay for Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer, as...

Todd Haynes is in the running for best director and both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are in contention for best female lead alongside Room’s Brie Larson as Carol earned six 2016 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in Los Angeles on Tuesday.Scroll down for full list of nominations
Close behind were Spotlight and Beasts Of No Nation on five apiece, followed by indie darling Tangerine and Anomalisa on four each.
Not even a glitch that saw the list of nominees temporarily appear on the Film Independent website prior to the official announcement could spoil what turned out by and large to be a recognition of independent film in its myriad forms.
Besides the more predictable contenders like Carol, Spotlight and Room, there was plenty of love for Tangerine, shot on an iPhone, and Beasts Of No Nation from Netflix, whose day-and-date release (and what that portends) infuriated large swathes of the exhibition sector but has clearly...

Shot in June in Los Angeles, The Force features Olivia Thirlby and Ben Feldman in the pole position as newly married urbanites with a faint degree of amnesia with a supporting cast familiar indie face offerings of Adam Goldberg, Analeigh Tipton, Scott Haze, Lesley Ann Warren, Betsy Brandt, John Ross Bowie, Jon Heder, Alison Sudol and filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich. Latin American/Los Angeles transplanted AFI alumni visual artist and painter Rafael Palacio Illingworth got his start with another relationship-themed dramedy with the micro budgeted Macho (2009) and in-between features he filmed some commercial spots and put out a pair of shorts with one bringing him to the Venice Film Festival.

We’d be hard pressed to find more of an enraptured superfan of Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel than Marielle Heller. The actress adapted Diary of a Teenage Girl into a stageplay, played the lead, and at the end of the playhouse run figured she wasn’t done with the material. 2012 was a pivotal bloom year for the adaptation, with Heller landing all encompassing support from the Sundance Institute folks with a quartet of workshoppy goodness: Creative Producing Summit, June Screenwriters Lab, Directors Lab and Screenplay Reading Series. Production took place in San Francisco this past January, with the love triangle roles being distributed to Alexander Skarsgard, Kristen Wiig, and newbie Bel Powley in the title role. Set in the Farrah Fawcett pin-up era, this potentially thorny The Ice Storm-esque drama pits irresponsible adults with grown up teenagers and should be a highly sought after acquisitions title …. especially if...
