China’s film market is recovering, now the country’s cinemas and borders are open, and more films are being released, but producers and investors are playing it safe with a limited range of movies, said speakers at Bridging The Dragon’s annual Cannes Marche panel.
In the first session, ‘Is China Back?’, Chinese director-producer Lu Chuan (City Of Life And Death) said: “We have lots of talented and brave young filmmakers who want to make films – the problem is how do we encourage them to make more different types of films, and not only focus on comedies and family dramas.”
One of the biggest trends at the China box office since cinemas reopened has been big-budget comedies, usually with top stars – films like the Detective Chinatown franchise and this year’s Godspeed, which grossed $136M (RMB959M) – have helped drive the country’s box office recovery. China’s box...

China wants to embolden its film presence in Hollywood. What better way than to take a masterpiece from one of its most widely celebrated auteurs and repurpose it in glorious 3D? Wong Kar-wai's ravishing martial arts epic "The Grandmaster" has been set for re-release in 3-D this October. A wide release is expected from its original Chinese distributor and co-producer Bona Fide Films. Gener8 Media is handling the conversion, which Wong has supervised. This exuberantly choreographed, sweeping chronicle of the life of Ip Man starring Wong regular Tony Leung became one of the Hong Kong auteur's biggest international successes in 2013. It played well in Us theaters as well, in spite of a whittled down Weinstein cut that all but handed the story to you on a silver platter. Variety reports: “This is likely to be a special edition, probably resembling the so called U.S.-cut, but with added unseen footage,...

Held at the UK Film Centre, the panel discussed the issues facing films looking for co-production with China.
Tapping into the Chinese film market is not easy, was the overriding message at the Chinese co-production panel held today [May 17] at the UK Film Centre in Cannes.
Jeffrey Chan from Bona Film Group said the major challenge is finding stories that work in both China and the West.
“You have to find the right project to appeal to multiple countries, that also targets the Chinese market. For distributors, it’s easier to focus on the Chinese market as you don’t have to work out so many differences,” said Chan.
He also explained that fulfilling China’s co-production regulations is more difficult now, stemming from a clamp down in 2012 when several films applied for co-production status without putting a strong enough focus on Chinese elements.
“The rules haven’t necessarily changed, it’s just that some of the projects...

Hong Kong — The surprise hit in Chinese theaters last year was a low-budget, wacky road-trip comedy that even beat out global blockbuster "Avatar" to become the country's highest-grossing film ever. But "Lost in Thailand" found just a paltry $57,000 during its U.S. theatrical release.
The film that earned 1.26 billion yuan ($200 million) in China joins other homegrown hits that have flopped internationally, and is the latest sign that while the country has become a box-office superpower, it faces a harder task fulfilling its leaders' hopes that its studios will be able to rival Hollywood for global influence.
Action-comedy "Let the Bullets Fly," starring Chow Yun-fat, grossed $111 million at home but $63,000 in the United States, while action-fantasy "Painted Skin: The Resurrection," starring Donnie Yen, earned $113 million domestically but $50,400 in the U.S., according to Hollywood.com.
