It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

‘Breaking Bad’ Stars Playfully Bicker While Presenting SAG Drama Ensemble Award to ‘Succession’ Cast

Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Dean Norris and R.J. Mitte were among those gathered to represent Breaking Bad, celebrating the show’s win in the category 10 years ago. After Gunn began spelling out the word “ensemble” by explaining that the “E” stands for “excitement,” Odenkirk quipped, “And the letter N. N stands for ‘no’ — no fucking way I’m going to do this cheesy thing where you say each letter of the word. I’m not doing it.”

Vince Gilligan may have created “Breaking Bad” epilogue film “El Camino” and prequel series “Better Call Saul,” but don’t expect “Heisenberg Jr.” any time soon.
Ten years after the “Breaking Bad” series finale, creator and showrunner Gilligan told Variety that he has “no interest” in a spinoff series centered around Walter White’s son Walt Jr., played by Rj Mitte.
“I’d hate the thought of Walt Jr. following in Walt’s footsteps in the crime business. That’s probably the kind of thing somebody will pitch 10 or 15 years from now — Walter Jr. as an Albuquerque crime lord succeeding where his father failed,” Gilligan said. “I could pretty much guarantee right now that I have no interest in seeing that happen. This article contains spoilers for Breaking Bad season 5 episode 14 “Ozymandias.”
Breaking Bad’s final season is 10 years old. It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Walter White’s story came to a close. All of the deceit, violence, plot twists, and puzzling cliffhangers the series provided still occupy a mountain of space in our heads, just begging for yet another rewatch. In the time since the final episodes of the beloved crime drama aired, no show has quite matched the exquisite pacing and pitch-perfect tone of the eight episodes that concluded Walter’s time as the meth kingpin of New Mexico. Still, even amongst an array of masterpiece hours of television in the second half of the show’s fifth and final season, the Rian Johnson-directed epic “Ozymandias” stands tall above all else.

The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.
Le Besco has worked in front of the camera since she was eight, and by her early 20s was already a face of French auteur cinema, with two César nominations — for her performances in Benoît Jacquot’s Sade (2000) and Cédric Kahn’s Roberto Succo (2001) and a best actress honor in Venice for Jacquot’s L’Intouchable (2006).
Her directorial debut, 2004’s Demi-Tarif (Half-Price), the story of three young siblings, Romeo (Kolia Litscher), Launa (Lila Salet), and the youngest, Leo (Cindy David), left on their own in a rundown Paris apartment, was an unmediated look into the world of childhood and drew praise from the likes of Mia Hansen-Løve, whose review,...

In a random scene of director Vincent Shade’s The Unseen (2023), a character asks another character if he has been able to find the Zodiac Killer. That is more than a clear homage to the iconic David Fincher movie. And the reason is that the director is attempting to pull off something that is cut from the same cloth. Except it just isn’t what he hoped for it to be.

The whole point of the non-linear narrative format is to elevate the quality of storytelling and essentially make a film more engaging for the audience. This movie uses that just for the sake of looking cool. Everything is so random here, from the acting to the writing to the abrupt changes in tone. For a larger chunk of its runtime, we don’t even get what is really happening. And we don’t really care about it either.

It's no secret that the writers of "Breaking Bad" preferred going without a strict plan. Much like antihero protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston) often found himself "MacGyver-ing" his way out of sticky situations, the show's writers needed to be flexible. Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), the show's heart and soul, had been planned to die at the end of the first season. Mike (Jonathan Banks) the fixer was the result of a last-minute casting fix. And just about every deviation the show made from its original plan made it richer, more unpredictable, more exciting.
For showrunner Vince Gilligan, a lot of that flexibility came down to having a great writing staff. As he told the Av Club after the show's third season, "I've got a lot of really smart people in the room with me and I'm very lucky for that." If a plotline needed to be changed, they could do...

Creating a pilot episode of television that can convince a network that your show deserves their time and attention is incredibly difficult. Once you’ve done so, morphing those novel ideas into concepts, characters, and plotlines that will resonate with the audience for many episodes to come is even more challenging. Viewers want something to latch onto when they first tune in for a new series. With so much to watch, they need to know that investing patience into a brand new show will pay off.
Breaking Bad’s pilot episode aired 15 years ago this Jan. 20, and it’s one of the best introductions in the history of the medium. Aired on the underrated network AMC, which at the time had also just launched another generational drama, Mad Men, the Vince Gilligan-created masterpiece had to make sure it hit a massive home run to draw the attention of fans...

It’s hard to find a way to bring everyone together in one location at the same time, whether that’s in our own lives or in a TV show. Our stories don’t always mesh or meet up in a convenient way. Eating is the response to this dilemma. One of humanity’s most social activities, a meal is the perfect spot for folks to sit down and catch up with one another. We all have to chow down to survive, so why not do it together?
TV writers understand this fact very well, using the dinner table as the conduit for producing key plot points, iconic lines, and legendary performances. Most of the time, the results are awkward and uncomfortable, just like at our own tables. With Thanksgiving here, we thought it would be fitting to look at the times supper made us cringe, close our eyes, and maybe even burst out laughing!

"Breaking Bad" has plenty of funny moments, but at its heart, the story is a tragedy. The acclaimed series follows put-upon high school chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston) who begins to deal meth in order to ensure a financial future for his family after a cancer diagnosis. As Walt's morality crumbles and he becomes a drug kingpin, the only character to really hold his humanity accountable is his business partner, former student and meth dealer Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). Walt slowly alienates himself from his wife Skylar (Anna Gunn), son Walt Jr. (Rj Mitte), and brother-in-law Hank (Dean Norris), but Jesse never quite gives up...

Based on the screenwriter’s own youth, this underdog disability story wins points for authenticity, but sports movie cliches blunt the impact
With actors with disabilities often confined to supporting roles, Triumph could have been a breath of fresh air. Centring on the rarely seen athletic journey of a character with a motor disorder, this underdog, coming-of-age sports movie has a big heart but lacks the competency to execute its aspirational premise.
Mike (Rj Mitte) is a handsome high school freshman with a particularly disarming smile. He dreams of joining the wrestling team; however, because he has cerebral palsy, the obstacles are numerous. Not only does Mike endure jeers and bullying from other students, his caring but overly protective father also attempts to dissuade him from participating in organised sports. In the face of such hurdles, Mike fortunately has the unwavering support of the tough-but-fair Coach Cutting (Terrence Howard) and...

It’s not exactly easy to tell if Rj Mitte will get his wish or not since the Breaking Bad legacy has already seen El Camino and Better Call Saul come to fruition, and while it might feel like reopening an old wound, there are likely to be a lot of people that might agree with Mitte that there’s more than enough material explore what happened to the White family after they parted ways with Walt. Plus, the idea that Mitte does feel that things were left unresolved between Walt Jr. and his father after the phone discussion when Walt Jr.

Building a career as an actor can be a long and stressful process, but Rj Mittie is one of the lucky few who was able to get a major break not long after getting into the industry. Rj Mitte, well-known for his role at Walter Jnr in Breaking Bad, takes on the lead in this enjoyable thriller The Oak Room. Perhaps it’s because the nostalgia for going in and sitting at the bar of a pub is so rife, or the labyrinthine storytelling technique, as a clever little flick that is sure to keep your concentration.
We had the pleasure of speaking to the leading star Mitte, as we discussed the project at hand, while also looking back fondly on his time being a part of the White family, and whether the Breaking Bad collective still stay in touch. A father’s legacy is in dispute when wayward son Rj Mitte decides to spar with the barman who guards the man’s ashes
Several men walk into several bars in this interlocking suite of tales, and the repeating permutations of barman and barfly, blue collar and white collar, father and son, raconteur and listener pile up pleasingly into a kind of oppressive, Coenesque cosmic joke. Rj Mitte, Breaking Bad’s Walter White Jr, plays college boy Steve, who turns up in a snowstorm at a bar owned by the irascible Paul (Peter Outerbridge). He owes the latter money – and without it, Paul won’t give up the ashes of Steve’s recently deceased dad, Gord, whose funeral the youth failed to attend. And then this arrogant sadsack – whose very presence aggravates Paul – offers to pay him with a story.
Steve’s yarn is a slack spin on his own:...

"I've got something better than cash... I've got a story." Gravitas Ventures has debuted another new US trailer for a Canadian indie "sinister thriller" titled The Oak Room. This first premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year (Zofia reviewed it from that festival here) and also stopped by the Telluride Horror Show. During a raging snowstorm, a drifter (Rj Mitte) offers to settle a debt with a grizzled bartender by telling him a story. But the evening's events quickly spiral into a dark tale of deceit, mistaken identity and shocking violence. A film about storytelling and how stories intertwine. Also starring Peter Outerbridge, Nicholas Campbell, Martin Roach, David Ferry, and Ari Millen. These trailers don't seem to sell the film that well, but all the reviews are saying it's quite good. A thrilling film about mysteries and crazy twists. Here's the new official US trailer (+ poster) for Cody Calahan's The Oak Room,...

The film follows a drifter who tries to settle an old debt with a grizzled bartender by telling him a story. The night’s events quickly spin into a dark tale of mistaken identities, double-crosses and shocking violence.

“Breaking Bad” actor Rj Mitte remembers the first time he saw actors with a disabilities onscreen — it was Geri Jewell on “The Facts of Life” and “Seinfeld” actor Danny Woodburn. But Mitte didn’t immediately link their disability with difference: “I never had the correlation of ‘Oh, that person has a disability,'” Mitte told IndieWire. It’s ironic that, to a generation of viewers, Mitte himself became the first person with a disability they saw on television when he played Bryan Cranston’s son Walt Jr. on the series from 2008 to its conclusion in 2013.
That pressure of being the first isn’t one Mitte necessarily feels, because he chooses to channel it away from being a disabled performer, to a performer in general. “There’s always pressure, be it great or a bit small,” he said. “The more pressure you put on me the better. I will have more reason to do more.

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to alter people’s holiday celebrations, many people are finding that watching holiday films is one tradition that can continue. While there has been no meaningful change in the percentage of speaking characters with disabilities in these top-grossing films in the past five years with just 2.3 percent of the 4,451 characters analyzed in the 100 top-grossing films of 2019 by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism having a disability, several holiday films are bucking this trend. And for the one-in-four people in the U.S. who have a disability, that means there are more opportunities to see ourselves reflected on screen.
