Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers is set in the last weeks of 1970 and, if attention is paid, you’ll see Da’Vine Joy Randolph pay homage to Isabel Sanford, particularly how the tv legend wore her hair when she played Louise “Weezy” Jefferson in the classic TV comedy The Jeffersons.
“I do this all the time with my characters,” Randolph tells me as she explains how she likes to distract herself from “Da’Vine,” and of how she has sacrificed much of her private life to her professional life.
In her portrait of Mary Lamb, the catering manager at an elite boys school, she felt like she was “walking this emotional, psychological tightrope,” because Mary’s only child has been killed fighting for his country in Vietnam.
It was a case of constant checks and balances because she didn’t want her Mary to be “whiny and cry. Didn’t...

Leah Chase, who taught the nation about Creole food at her Dooky Chase’s restaurant in New Orleans and was a celebrity chef who appeared in numerous TV shows and film documentaries, has died. She passed Saturday at her son’s home near her New Orleans restaurant.
Chase and her husband, Edgar “Dooky’ Chase, had the first white tablecloth restaurant for black customers in the heavily segregated city. Dooky Chase’s began as a sandwich shop in the Treme district, but expanded into an upscale restaurant that was the equal of anything in the French Quarter.
Along the way, Leah Chase’s expertise in Creole cooking drew national attention. Cookbooks, innumerable media interviews and television shows, and film documentaries cataloged this unique regional cuisine. Princess Tiana, who wanted to own a restaurant in the animated Disney feature The Princess and the Frog, was based on Chase. Tiana was the first...

Paulette Leaphart has inspired millions of people in her fight against breast cancer, and thanks to Beyoncé, her story has now touched even more. Turning lemons to lemonade, the breast cancer survivor and mother of eight has been on an incredible journey that ended in joy on the set of Beyoncé's Lemonade visual album. While training for her 1,000 mile bare-chested walk for cancer awareness (which begins Saturday), Leaphart learned of a casting for a "top secret" video being made for a "very big star." She took her 8-year-old daughter Madeline to audition, but it was Leaphart who ended up with a part.

In late May, Bravo's "Top Chef" arrived in New Orleans to film its 11th season, premiering on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in a city famed for fun, food and fabulous music. Production wrapped in early July.
But sitting as it does on the Gulf Coast in the Deep South of the U.S., the Big Easy is also known for warm weather -- and the "Top Chef" team could hardly have picked a toastier time of year.
Says judge Gail Simmons, a cook and former food journalist,to Zap2it, "It was incredibly hot outside. It was definitely taxing on our chefs that are cooking and on our production crew, shooting long hours and long days in 100-degree, 100 percent humidity weather. Otherwise, that was a small price to pay to get to do it in New Orleans.
"We mixed it up a lot. We're indoors; we're outdoors. We go into the countryside.
