The Vampire Diaries, Season 4, Episode 18: “American Gothic”
Written by Evan Bleiweiss and Jose Molina
Directed by Kellie Cyrus
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on The Vampire Diaries: Sheriff Forbes is very good at her job, Katherine and Elena have a chat, and Silas flexes some psychological muscle
Since the return of Katherine in “Down the Rabbit Hole”, and particularly since Elena turned off her emotions in “Stand by Me”, fans have been waiting to see Katherine and this new Elena share the screen. Nina Dobrev has proven herself time and again to be a talented and versatile actor- seeing her play against herself should be fun. Unfortunately, while her humanity-less Elena remains consistent and entertaining, Katherine feels less so, making their scenes together somewhat of a disappointment. It’s a tricky thing- it’s completely reasonable that Katherine has grown or developed since...

The Vampire Diaries Episode 418
“American Gothic”
Written By: Evan Bleiweiss & Jose Molina
Directed By: Kellie Cyrus
Original Airdate: 28 March 2013
In This Episode...
Rebekah and Elena take a break from hunting Katherine. After hitting three towns in two days, Elena is hungry. In a small town, she tries to eat a woman off the street. The woman recognizes her - as Katherine. Jackpot. It quickly becomes apparent that Katherine has compelled the whole town to bend to her will, and to pretend they don’t know Katherine unless it is Katherine talking to them. It’s good to be a doppelganger. It doesn’t take long to locate Katherine, and Elena and Rebekah hold her hostage at a diner. Elena sees Katherine has a meeting with someone named “Em” at 2pm, so she dresses as Katherine and goes to keep the meeting while Rebekah keeps an eye on Katherine.
It turns out that “Em” is Elijah.

That damned cure.
It’s been a driving plot point ever since our beloved Elena became a vampire and, honestly, the whole thing started boring me episodes ago... until tonight’s “American Gothic” episode, written by Evan Bleiweiss and Jose Molina.
In the past on The Vampire Diaries, a road trip away from Mystic Falls often felt like a stand-alone episode in that there may have been a goal that fed into the overall plot but, in the end, it still felt a lot like filler to prolong getting to the good stuff.
But with Elena and Rebekah working together at the top of the hour to find the holder of the cure – bad ol' Katherine – the installment was filled with action, suspense and some definite movement in the plot; it also did what The Vampire Diaries Season 4 has failed to do for me a lot over the past few...

The Vampire Diaries Review, Season 3, Episode 19: “Heart of Darkness”
Written by Brian Young and Evan Bleiweiss
Directed by Chris Grismer
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on The Vampire Diaries: Jeremy’s back, Rose’s back, Tyler’s back, Esther’s back. It’s a big ol’ Vampire Diaries reunion.
For many, the highlight of this episode will be the big ol’ makeout session between Elena and Damon. It’s significant forward progress in the shipping wars one assumes must be waging in certain corners of the Vampire Diaries fandom. However, despite the lovely scene of Elena and Damon talking that precedes this *ahem* progress, the scenes that result from it are, for the most part, the weakest element of this episode, and they’re far from helped by the soundtrack choices.
Pop music soundtracks are fairly common, particularly on younger-skewing series or shows aimed towards a female audience.

The Vampire Diaries Review, Season 3, Episode 15: “All My Children”
Written by Evan Bleiweiss and Michael Narducci
Directed by Pascal Verschooris
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on The Vampire Diaries: Elena can’t keep her mouth shut, Bonnie can’t stay out of vampire business, and Ric really does have horrible luck with women.
On a different series, the climax of this episode wouldn’t work. It wouldn’t be tense, there wouldn’t be drama. On a different series, when a character proclaimed they were taking down the season-long villain when they were still 7 episodes out from the finale, it’d be a forgone conclusion that the scheme would fail. On The Vampire Diaries, it’s a surprise.
This is one of the very few instances in the series’ run where a major character’s endeavor hasn’t succeeded, at least partially. Emily destroyed the pendant,...
