Offered a job at age 14 at the post office in Fringford, Oxfordshire, where she worked for 7 years. Her postal career was the basis for her autobiographical novels "Lark Rise" (1939), "Over to Candleford" (1941), and "Candleford Green" (1945). Her husband was also working as a post office clerk when they met.
