Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Hollywood is back, and Apple TV+ has the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced war epic to prove it. "Masters of the Air," the pair's long-awaited follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific," is finally coming to the streamer in January, and the limited series' first trailer is finally here. In short, it looks incredible.
The series began production over at HBO way back in 2013, but in 2019 it moved to Apple TV, where it was the first production ever greenlit through Apple's in-house studio. Nothing about this first look at the big-budget show has a bit of generic, "in-house" feel to it, though, as it frankly looks just as sweeping, horrifying, and engrossing as Spielberg and Hanks' previous acclaimed war dramas. "Band of Brothers" writer John Orloff is co-creator of the series along with "Breaking Bad" writer-director John Shiban. The show's directorial slate is equally impressive, with...

Vivid portrait of the great playwright of inertia points up the contrast with his real-life romantic entanglements and daring work for the French resistance
Director James Marsh has boldly, maybe even sacrilegiously, given us a Hollywoodised biopic of Samuel Beckett. It starts with Beckett surreally escaping the Nobel ceremony to talk in private with a doppelganger confessor – a breezier, more worldly self in a rollneck sweater and jacket – and glumly wondering to whom in his life he should penitentially give the prize money, a guilt list which ushers in the flashbacks.
It isn’t hard to imagine what the man himself would have said about this movie, but though a little hammy, it is well acted and tells the story with verve, tackling the paradox of Beckett’s bleak fictional universe of stymied inaction and his dramatic real life of service in the French resistance and romantic intrigue. There’s a very thoughtful,...

Fionn O'Shea, Gabriel Byrne and James Marsh at the press conference Photo: Courtesy of San Sebastian Film Festival/Jorge Fuembuena The life of Samuel Beckett, although very little of the work, is explored in James Marsh’s Dance First, written by Neil Forsyth. The film, which is the closing night selection at San Sebastian Film Festival dips into the Waiting For Godot author’s life from childhood to death, featuring key performances from Gabriel Byrne and Fionn O’Shea as the author, alongside Sandrine Bonnaire and Léonie Lojkine as his wife Suzanne, with support from the likes of Aidan Gillen and Maxine Peake.
Speaking at the press conference in San Sebastian Gabriel Byrne said that “talking to himself” as the writer interrogates a second version of himself of the film was quite tricky.#

European pay TV platform Sky has released the trailer for Sky Original film “Dance First,” ahead of its world premiere at San Sebastian Film Festival on Sept. 30. Film Constellation is handling international sales on the film.
The film is directed by BAFTA and Academy Award winner James Marsh (“The Theory of Everything”) and written by BAFTA winner Neil Forsyth (“Guilt”). “Dance First” will be released in movie theaters in the U.K. and Ireland in November, on Sky Cinema in those countries in December and on Sky Arts and Freeview next year.
In “Dance First,” Golden Globe winner Gabriel Byrne (“The Usual Suspects”) plays Samuel Beckett with young Beckett played by Fionn O’Shea (“Normal People”) in a sweeping account of the life of this 20th century literary icon. Parisian bon vivant, World War II resistance fighter, Nobel Prize-winning playwright, philandering husband and recluse, Beckett lived a life of many parts.

Dance First follows Beckett’s life from his time as a fighter for the French Resistance during the Second World War, through his friendship with fellow Irish literary luminary James Joyce, his rise with such groundbreaking plays as Waiting for Godot, Endgame and Happy Days — which established the Theater of the Absurd movement — to his receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969, and his later life as a recluse. An Oscar winner for his documentary Man on Wire and the filmmaker behind 2014’s awards juggernaut The Theory of Everything, James Marsh has been away from the big screen for a few years (his last project was the 2018 heist film King of Thieves). But he comes to Cannes with two buzzy projects in the market. In Night Boat to Tangier, he takes on Kevin Barry’s New York Times best-seller with a cast including Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson and Ruth Negga.
That film hasn’t shot yet, but Marsh has already completed a rather different feature, Dance First. A sweeping account of the life of literary icon Samuel Beckett (the title is taken from his ethos, “Dance first, think later”), the film sees Gabriel Byrne as the Nobel Prize winner in a story that covers the many aspects of his younger years: from Parisian bon vivant to WWII resistance fighter and philandering husband.

Species dysphoria. That’s what the professionals call the condition troubling Jakob (George MacKay) in “Wolf,” a shockingly dull look at a fascinating disorder affecting humans who believe they were born into the wrong species. Jakob is convinced he’s a wolf in human clothing, and except for the first and last scenes, he spends practically the entire film trying to fight that impression at the True You rehab center, where crackpot doctors (led by Paddy Considine) use a troubling assortment of treatments to “cure” Jakob and his fellow patients.
As presented, True You feels like a cross between a zoo and a gay conversion therapy clinic, where Jakob finds himself surrounded by a menagerie of other frustrated young people: a shy, awkward young woman (Elsa Fionur) who whinnies like a horse; another (Lola Petticrew) who wears a false beak and feather headdress of sorts and repeats others’ words; and an eager,...

"Life is no fairy tale... Is it?" Focus Features has released an official trailer for the film titled Wolf, which recently premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival at the end of the fest. This is the "high concept" drama starring the very talented actor George MacKay as a boy who believes he is a wolf. When he is sent to a clinic, Jacob and his animal-bound peers are "forced to undergo increasingly extreme forms of 'curative' therapies." However, once he meets the mysterious Wildcat, everything changes. Lily-Rose Depp stars as "Wildcat", with a cast including Paddy Considine, Martin McCann, Terry Notary, Fionn O'Shea, Eileen Walsh, Lola Petticrew, and Senan Jennings. When this premiered at TIFF, they didn't allow it to be screened for press, for better or worse. I'm definitely curious! MacKay is a tremendously talented actor and maybe he's doing something incredible taking on this tricky role. I just...

The Academy Award-nominated animated feature “Wolfwalkers,” from Kilkenny-based studio Cartoon Saloon, has won Best Film at the Irish Film and Television Awards this evening.
It is the second time an animated feature has won in the category, the first being Cartoon Saloon’s “Song of the Sea” in 2015.
“Avengers: Endgame” star Josh Brolin presented the award for Best Film. “My own story with Ireland is that at 20 years old I was in Dublin, and I blindly walked into a theatre on a movie called ‘My Left Foot,’ and left a changed man,” he recalled. “With the rest of my very little money that same trip, I saw the Cusack’s do ‘The Three Sisters’ at the Gate Theatre and was again changed. I also read ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ that same trip. Ireland has had a massive impact on me, so I just wanted to...

Paul Mescal emerged as one of the breakout stars of 2020 thanks to his performance in BBC and Hulu drama “Normal People.”
Ireland has seen a slew of such acting talent establish themselves in recent years, like Jessie Buckley with her star turn as the pregnant wife of a doomed Russian fireman in “Chernobyl” and Barry Keoghan, who won attention with lead roles in two 2017 films, “Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “Dunkirk.” Keoghan is now BAFTA-nominated for “Calm with Horses,” as is Niamh Algar, whose credits include “The Virtues” and “Raised by Wolves.” Elsewhere Domhnall Gleeson has made a name for himself as General Dux in recent “Star Wars” films, and also in “The Revenant” and “Ex Machina.”

"You know you can tell me anything and I will love you no matter what." Goldwyn Films has released a trailer for the British indie coming-of-age comedy film Dating Amber, the second feature from filmmaker David Freyne. The film is about a closeted gay teen and his lesbian counterpart who pretend to be a couple to avoid suspicion. Dating Amber is "a love letter to all those kids who grew up in a small town and who needed to escape in order to be themselves." Starring Fionn O’Shea & Lola Petticrew as Eddie & Amber, along with Sharon Horgan, Barry Ward, Simone Kirby, Evan O'Connor, Ian O'Reilly, and Emma Willis. This looks good! Yes it's a story we've heard before, but this looks like it has a refreshingly spunky look and feel, not only taking place during the 1990s but the with the wonderful connection these two have. Teen romantic comedies can be hard to invest in emotionally, particularly as one sinks further into decrepit, cynical adulthood. Whether or not the guy gets the girl in time for senior prom seems pretty inconsequential when you know they’ll probably be torn asunder by college. The good ones have something a little more lasting and internal at stake: Youthful crushes come and go, but you only truly come of age once. A gentle, bittersweet Irish charmer that’s more thoughtful than its generic title, “Dating Amber” finds such stakes as it follows two closeted teens who pretend to be in love, thus deflecting the speculation of classmates and concerned parents. What we root for isn’t just the kids’ tender (if strictly platonic) relationship, but their threatened senses of self: With light, loving strokes, writer-director David Freyne etches lives on the precipice of ruin.

Dating Amber
Set in Ireland during the mid-90s, Eddie (portrayed by Fionn O’Shea) and Amber (portrayed by Lola Petticrew) are two teens attempting to fit in. Only, things aren’t going so well. While both are secretly gay, their peers already suspect it. To spare themselves the ridicule, the two friends stage a relationship, performing awkward displays of affection for others’ benefit. While the clip teases the teens’ relationships with real partners finally eclipsing their arrangement, the friendship between them is anything but fake. (June 4)

So Dating Amber, released originally as "Beards", is a “poignant” (check), “honest” (absolutely!) and “funny” (very much so) “look at the highs and lows of teenage life where the only way to fit in is to not be yourself, even if this goes against your very being”.
That’s what it says on the label and, for the most part, the label is accurate. Well, for the first half anyway. According to personal preference, you may consider that a serious weakness or strength in what might otherwise come across as yet one more frothy tale of bigotry and coming out in Ireland in the 90s.
The set-up is recognisable from other recent comedy offerings that deal with growing up and being true to yourself, including Sing Street, Sex Education (Netflix) and Normal People.
Amber (Lola Petticrew) and Eddie (Fionn O’Shea) are two teens on the brink of leaving school to begin the journey.
