12.15am GMT: Greetings all, and welcome to the preview to tonight's Golden Globes liveblog. While I may not actually be on the red carpet in Los Angeles, I will be reporting to you live from my red sofa in New York. Truly, no expense is spared in the Guardian liveblog department. This is journalism in action, people! Suck on it, Woodward and Bernstein.
Oh, I do love the Golden Globes. So much more fun than the Oscars, because the nominees tend to be more what my cousin Catie calls "loosey goosey", or what I call "drunk". The usual explanation for this is that it's because there are so many more acting categories...

It's been an interesting night at the 68th Annual Golden Globes; a potpourri of predictable winners…and some unusual victories.
Among the winners, David Fincher's film The Social Network, about the rise of Facebook, took home the top honor as best motion picture in the dramatic category.
HBO's Prohibition-era series Boardwalk Empire was an early winner on Sunday night. The series, which revolves around Atlantic City gangsters during the 1920s, took home trophies for best TV drama and best TV actor for star Steve Buscemi.
"I'm only as good as the people I work with and I have the best cast," the actor said on the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Glee favorite Chris Colfer and The Fighter's Christian Bale also picked up early honors. Colfer, who portrays openly gay high school student Kurt on Glee, was named best supporting actor in a TV series, miniseries or TV movie.

Welcome to the Gay Globes – er, sorry Golden Globes. With all the gay-themed and gay-favorite nominees this year, you can see how a gal might get confusion. The nominations were announced this morning and the list includes best picture nods for Black Swan and The Kids Are All Right, in drama and comedy respectively.
Both films received four nominations each including a pair of nods for their actresses, with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore for best actress in a comedy and Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis for best actress and supporting actress in a drama. So, to summarize, make out with a lady on screen this year and have a good chance of touching a Globe – er, sorry Golden Globe. If you were doing it right on screen I’m sure hoping you rounded second already.
The Golden Globe nominations, with their recognition of both movies and TV, are always a mixed bag.

On the Best Actress, film front; Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry and Michelle Williams fight a tight race.
The theme of the awards in general is definitely drama. The nominated films, actors and actresses all power it up in the intense drama department versus science fiction last year when Avatar dominated nominations.
We’re all glued to the Golden Globes because nominations at this first big awards show set up the tone and the battles for the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics Choice Awards and more.
HollywoodLife.com favorites getting the Golden Globe nomination nod, that we can’t wait to see on the red carpet.
Chris Colfer, Glee — Best Supporting Actor in a series, mini series or TV movie.
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family — Best Supporting Actress in a series, mini-series or TV movie.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe nominations were announced today with The King’s Speech leading the pack with seven nominations including Best Picture (Drama), Colin Firth for Best Actor (Drama), Tom Hooper for Best Director, Helena Bonham Carter for Best Supporting Actress, and Geoffrey Rush for Best Supporting Actor. The film, which deals with King George VI’s stuttering problems, is expected to carry out this success to the Oscars and it is no surprise that it got the most Golden Globe nominations.
The Fighter picked up six nominations: Best Picture (Drama), David O. Russell (Best Director), Mark Wahlberg (Best Actor, Drama), Christian Bale (Best Supporting Actor), Amy Adams (Best Supporting Actress), and Melissa Leo (Best Supporting Actress). It tied with The Social Network for the second most nominations. Inception received four nominations including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
The real bizarre news was in the Best Comedy/Musical category.

The 68th Golden Globe Award nominations, probably the most significant industry award ceremony preceding the Academy Awards (and most likely to match the Academy Awards), were announced minutes ago… and, of note, Halle Berry received a nomination for Best Actress (Drama) for her work in Frankie & Alice. So, it looks like the campaign has paid off somewhat. She hasn’t won, and she probably won’t win, given her competition, but at least she’s been noticed. Let’s see if Oscar voters feel the same way.

Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes and Blair Underwood joined HFPA President Philip Berk to announce the nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards from the Beverly Hilton early this morning. The King’S Speech saw the most love from the HFPA with 7 nominations for the Weinstein Films royal drama. The Social Network and The Fighter saw 6 noms each and Kids Are All Right, Black Swan and Inception round out the nominations with four.
As most awards season watcher will notice, some of the “surprise” nominations like the 2 for Johnny Depp, the embrace for The Tourist and even Burlesque, all stem from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual need for A-List stars and ratings. No nominations from foreign journalists for True Grit means nothing. AMPAS voting members will make up for this “snub” in January when the Academy Award Nomination are announced. Besides, the Globes is always an entertaining show...
