Susie Tennant — longtime member of the Seattle music community, promotions and marketing legend, and early supporter of Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and others — has died of early onset dementia. She was 61 years old.
News of Tennant’s passing was confirmed by the Friends of Susie Tennant Facebook page on Friday, with a post stating that she was “calm and at peace,” and “surrounded by family and love.” For several years, Tennant had suffered from several ailments; first ovarian cancer, which was in remission for the last years of her life (though she did suffer from “chemo brain” as a result of the treatment); and then frontotemporal degeneration, a type of dementia.
Over the course of Tennant’s career, she made waves — and, ultimately, an impact on global music history itself — as a champion of the Seattle music scene. As publicist for a then-ascendant Nirvana, she advocated for the band, won them opportunities,...

The tragic deaths of “Euphoria” actor Angus Cloud and Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor are only the latest stark reminders of Hollywood’s prevalent mental health and suicide crisis.
Although, as of this writing, neither has been officially determined to have died by suicide, both had been open about their struggles with mental health.
After every high-profile suicide, such as “Breaking Bad” actor Mike Batayeh, country singer Naomi Judd and “So You Can Think You Can Dance” judge Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the question is debated whether the industry, as a whole, has done enough to support people who may be in crisis.
“Euphoria” actor Angus Cloud was open about his mental struggle, family said.
A number of mental health experts told TheWrap that although suicides among the general population rose during the pandemic, people who work in entertainment can be particularly vulnerable.
“Entertainment is already an occupational group that’s at increased risk,...

Heavy Consequence contributor Greg Prato is also the author of several rock books. His latest, titled Lanegan, pays tribute to late singer Mark Lanegan. Below he introduces exclusive excerpts from Lanegan, as told by the vocalist’s musical peers.
As learned throughout his autobiography, Sing Backwards and Weep: A Memoir, few lived their life as hard as Mark Lanegan did. After apparently overcoming a near-fatal episode with Covid in 2021 — I interviewed over 20 musicians, friends, and admirers of his music for my latest book, simply titled Lanegan. Below are excerpts from the book, which touch upon various eras of his remarkable career.
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden): We played shows with the Trees, and Mark Pickerel used to joke about how the Trees were compared to the Doors – because on the early Trees records, people would describe Lanegan as having a voice that was reminiscent of Jim Morrison. And in our early days,...

On Hole’s 1994 breakthrough album, Live Through This, frontwoman Courtney Love presented a gruesome prophecy: “If you live through this with me/I swear that I will die for you,” she sings on the hypnotic, rumbling “Asking for It.” Love belts the line with more restraint than she usually displays: a disarming moment of vulnerability from the world’s then-most cataclysmic woman.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck
Directed by Brett Morgen
USA, 2015
It was 2004 and I was fifteen years old when I read Charles R. Cross’ Heavier than Heaven. I remember finishing the last chapters, sprawled on the floor of my family’s cottage as I cried so hard I started to dry heave. At the time I was unaware of the controversy that surrounded the adaptation, both in how Cross took liberties in certain facts (some information was later disproved, or at least not substantiated) and the decision he made to create what was ultimately a fictional take on Kurt’s final days up until the point he killed himself. Like many teenager before and since, Kurt Cobain represented a romantic and ultimately tragic figure to look up to – for better or for worse.

Kurt Cobain’s death is still the subject of fascination and speculation two decades after he was found dead in an apparent suicide attempt. Feeding the curiosity of the masses, the Seattle Police Department recently released more crime scene evidence, which included a note that reignited the belief of conspiracy theorists that though Courtney Love could have had a hand in Cobain’s demise.
Courtney Love Wrote Death-Scene Note
“Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawful shredded wife even when she’s a b---h with zits and siphoning all yr money for doping and whoring,” read the note. Notably, the lines, written on stationary from the Phoenix Hotel, presented a much different tone than the suicide note Cobain had left in which he spoke lovingly of his wife.
However, it wasn’t even Cobain who scrawled the note; it was Love. She revealed that it...

The wife of late grunge rocker Kurt Cobain is claiming she wrote the note that called her a “bitch with zits” and mocked the couple's wedding vows. According to Cobain biographer Charles R. Cross, Courtney Love says in an email that she wrote the nasty note found in Cobain's wallet released by Seattle police earlier this week. Seattle (AP) — One of the foremost experts on Kurt Cobain says late grunge rocker did not pen a note mocking his wedding vows to fellow musician Courtney Love. Love herself wrote it. Police found the note in Cobain's wallet after he killed himself in 1994. It received a lot of media attention last week after CBS News published it, saying it was presumably written by Cobain and that it was sure to stoke questions about what role his marriage played in his death. Charles R. Cross is a Seattle author who has written several books on Cobain, including the biography "Heavier Than Heaven." He says Love emailed him to say that she wrote the note and that she gave it to Cobain before their wedding in 1991. Cross says the couple often wrote each other such sarcastic notes, and the handwriting is Love's. Copyright © 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.

This month marks the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's final studio album, and fans aren't just able to buy a new "super deluxe" box set to celebrate the occasion. They can also buy the childhood home of late frontman Kurt Cobain, complete with his mattress. Cobain's mother, Wendy O'Connor, is putting the tired, 1.5-story bungalow two hours southwest of Seattle on the market this week. To help sell it, the family is offering a glimpse into the early life of its tortured and talented son through photos shot at the house, including one of a chocolate-frosted birthday cake for the then...

To fans of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain is a god. So it’s no surprise that some 10,000 fans flock annually to “Kurt Cobain Park,” officially known as Viretta Park, though even Google Maps identifies it by its unofficial name.
Cobain took his own life in a greenhouse behind the house that sits beside the park on April 8, 1994. While the home is a private residence, sold to its current owners by Courtney Love in 1997, the park has since become a shrine to Cobain, and fans come from across the world to write messages on the benches there.
The A.V. Club’s Pop Pilgrims series visited the park and spoke with Charles Cross, author of the Cobain biography Heavier Than Heaven, about Cobain and what continues to draw Nirvana fans to Kurt Cobain Park over 17 years after the singer-songwriter’s death.

Film director Oren Moverman has laid out his plans for a biopic of Kurt Cobain - insisting the movie will reflect the late rocker's "raw and chaotic" life.
The as-yet-untitled story of the Nirvana star will be loosely based on the acclaimed 2002 biography Heavier Than Heaven by Charles R. Cross.
But Moverman is adamant he will not focus purely on Cobain's drug addiction and death - he wants to show cinema-goers all aspects of the rocker's world.
Moverman tells British newspaper The Guardian, "People know the shortcut version - he took a lot of heroin, wrote Smells Like Teen Spirit, became the biggest rock star in the world and killed himself. Those known things about him are to me the least interesting.

London, April 21 – Courtney Love has two men in mind to possibly play her late husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, on the big screen.
Last week, the Hole rocker dismissed reports she wanted Twilight hunk Robert Pattinson to play Cobain, reports the Daily Express.
And now Love has suggested either Ryan Gosling or Scottish star James McAvoy could take on the role in a new biopic.
Love has acquired the rights to Charles Cross’ Heavier Than Heaven and has been working for almost five years to find the right team.

Hollywood has been mulling over movies about Nirvana frontman since 1994.

In the 16 years since Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead on April 5, 1994, numerous attempts have been made to recount his too-short life in film. "Milk" director Gus Van Sant came the closest, modeling the lead character (played by Michael Pitt) in 2005's "Last Days" after Cobain. A handful of documentaries have also recounted his tragic tale.
The next hope for Nirvana fans who would like to see the fallen musician immortalized on the big screen is an untitled biopic that is said to be based largely on "Heavier Than Heaven," a 2001 biography by Charles R. Cross. "Quantum of Solace" director Marc Forster was at one point rumored to be helming the biopic, though the gig has since passed to "The Messenger" director Oren Moverman.

Former Nirvana's drummer Dave Grohl wants an actress to portray him in a planned biopic about his late bandmate Kurt Cobain - and he's convinced Shelley Duvall is perfect for the role. And Grohl is convinced "The Shining" actress has the talents to pull off a sex swap and play a male rock icon.
He tells People.com, "I don't know about anyone else, but I'm crossing my fingers that Shelley Duvall plays me. Shelley Duvall in 'The Shining' ... Oscar-nominated actor Jeremy Renner has his heart set on rocking out on the big screen as late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
The Hurt Locker star will compete for the Best Actor honour at the upcoming Academy Awards, but Renner - who plays the piano and guitar - admits his dream has always been to star in something more music-based.
He tells People magazine, "I've always wanted to do some sort of musical. That's a dream for me. Maybe play Kurt Cobain."
And Renner could be in luck - The Messenger moviemaker Oren Moverman is reportedly in talks to take charge of a planned Cobain biopic.
The project, based on Charles R. Cross' 2001 book Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain, has been delayed after Brothers screenwriter David Benioff pulled out as director.

Oren Moverman proved he could handle delicate subject matter in his directorial debut, The Messenger, which followed an Army casualty officer who falls for a soldier's widow. THR reports that Moverman will continue his foray into dark drama — Universal has hired him to rewrite and direct a Kurt Cobain biopic, which will focus on the musician's life, music, and 1994 suicide.
Based on the 2001 biography Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain by Charles R. Cross, the original draft was written by Brothers screenwriter David Benioff, who interviewed Cobain's old friends in Seattle for his draft of the script.
Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, will serve as an executive producer on the untitled project, which currently has no scheduled release date.

Not to vent on how lame and old I am, but Nirvana was in their prime around my sophomore and junior year of High School. I clearly remember about a quarter of the boys in my school being obsessed with bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and with that whole grunge movement. I swear, no one in my class got a haircut for like 3 years. To this day my wife and I talk about Kurt Cobain and ponder what sort of music he'd be making and what sort of collaborations he'd be getting involved with if he were still alive today. And while it's painful to think about how much brilliant music we missed in all the years since Cobain's death, it's still nice to hold onto what we do have and cherish it; celebrate it.

Although it's faded from the memory, it has not disappeared: It's been two and a half years since word hit that David Benioff was penning a Kurt Cobain biopic, and now the project is gaining some steam. THR's Risky Business Blog reports that Oren Moverman, writer and director of the double Oscar-nominated The Messenger, is in talks to spruce up Benioff's screenplay and then direct it.
The biopic is based partially on the Charles R. Cross' Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain, which Courtney Love had already optioned. That, of course, brings up the warning bells since she's far from a beloved widow, and has had -- no surprise -- a crappy post-suicide relationship with Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. On the plus side, Benioff is said to have gone to Cobain's old friends in Seattle and Aberdeen to help paint the proper picture of him.

Universal also purchased the life rights for both Cobain and his widow, Courtney Love. It's been a few years since we've heard anything about the Kurt Cobain biopic that Courtney Love has been developing with Universal. David Benioff (The 25th Hour, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) was hired to write the script [1] back in 2007, based on the book Heavier Than Heaven by Charles Cross. Since then, Courtney Love has offered her dream casting choices [2], but the movie has essentially fallen off the radar... until now. Risky Business [3] reports that writer-director Oren Moverman is currently in talks to take over the project, the idea being that he would rewrite the screenplay and direct it as well. Moverman most recently wrote and directed The Messenger, a fantastic little drama that is up for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars this year. Based on that project alone I would say he has the subtlety and the vision to keep a Cobain biopic from becoming something it shouldn't be, but if that wasn't enough,...

I loved the hell out of The Messenger. Oren Moverman's film about two soldiers assigned to notify next of kin about soldiers' deaths was tense, empathetic and moving. It dealt with trauma better than Brothers and boasts a trio of fantastic performances. So I've been excited to hear about Moverman's future films, and now it seems that in addition to his mysterious film This Side of the Looking Glass he will rewrite and direct a biopic about Nirvana singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain. THR reports that Moverman will take on the Cobain biopic that has been brewing at Universal. The film based on Benioff's script has been percolating at Universal since then, without much public notice of movement. This is the first news we've...

Oren Moverman is moving on to his next tragedy.
Coming off two Oscar nominations for his directing debut, “The Messenger,” Moverman is in negotiations to rework the screenplay for Universal’s untitled Kurt Cobain project and direct it as well. Screenwriter David Benioff (“Brothers”) first took on the project in Fall 2007 for Working Title and Reveille.
Material on the life, music and 1994 suicide of the Nirvana singer-songwriter will come at least partially from Charles R. Cross’ 2001 biography, “Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain.”...

Courtney Love has suggested Armando Iannucci as a possible director for a biopic about her relationship with late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The Hole singer told Clash Magazine that the Scottish comedian would be ideal to helm the movie adaptation of Charles Cross's biography Heavier Than Heaven. Love said: " I became friends with Eric Fellner, who produced [Alex Cox's] Sid And Nancy, and Fellner is consequently producing Heavier Than Heaven, which is about Kurt and me. "Who's (more)...

- If you happen to notice a Ryan Gosling without a crew cut or a Scarlett Johansson in a platinum blond dye then that would mean that Courtney Love would have gotten what she wished for. Hard at work on not a new album but a big screen biopic titled Heavier than Heaven, apparently via a multitude of sources unknown, Love’s aspired casting picks (very pretty choices) are the two actors: Gosling gave us edgy with his drug-induced state in Half Nelson, and Johansson is a chesty enough to make a bad impression in Love’s undressed stage states, but to superimpose such faces onto both Love and Cobain might prove to be a difficult stretch. Make up jobs and battered sweaters will need to be above par. Based on a Cobain biography written by Charles Cross - the author had access to Cobain’s unpublished diaries as well

- Universal Pictures has hired scribe David Benioff (The 25th Hour) to write their planned Kurt Cobain biopic based on 'Heavier Than Heaven' by writer Charles Cross- which remains controversial among Nirvana fans for Cross's decision to include his own impression of Cobain's final days. The film will be a co-production between Working Title and Reveille Motion Pictures. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, will exec produce with her lawyer, Howard Weitzman. This is now the second project within a couple fo months that Love has greenlit. The studio has not yet revealed whether they've locked the music rights to Nirvana's catalogue- or how they're going to approach the story. This is bound to be a controversial production. Many Nirvana fans despise Courtney Love, and rail against the commercialization of Cobain's music. That said, I'm amazed it has taken so long to get a Cobain biopic off the ground.
