You must come across several movies on football or sports betting. Since football betting is a popular passion worldwide, it automatically becomes an appealing subject for filmmakers. You can find the link to movies based on football on the internet.
This hobby of football betting is not only addicting to bettors, but it has also influenced movies. But how do filmmakers depict football betting? This is exactly what we will be talking about in this post.
Football Betting & Movies
Football betting has existed for decades. No wonder, it is a popular subject for movie makers. Over the years, we have received many movies based on football betting and other sports. Some of these movies are even inspired by real-life incidents.
Since sports betting is a controversial topic, many of you would expect movies to depict it negatively. However, that is not the case, at least, not always.

The participation of director Stephen Frears and a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Rebecca Hall, Vince Vaughn, and Catherine Zeta-Jones should guarantee a theatrical release, right? Sorry, but no – Lay The Favorite is the movie and it’s gone straight to Redbox (and other home-viewing options) which is a shame because it’s a fun, if lightweight comedy set in the world of Las Vegas grifters and gamblers.
Hall plays Beth Raymer, who leaves her dancing job at a Florida strip club to become a Las Vegas cocktail waitress. Not exactly an ideal career choice, but her borderline-ditzy personality doesn’t give her many options. In walks Dink (Willis), a professional sports bettor who sees through her bubbly exterior and offers her a job placing wagers all over town to gain an advantage over the casinos. Her surprisingly impeccable mind for numbers soon cements her status as Dink’s good-luck charm,...

Chicago – Every once in a Hollywood while, a true head-scratcher comes along. How on Earth did this movie, with this many talented people involved, end up so boring? If you told me that Stephen Frears (“The Grifters,” “The Queen”) was re-teaming with his “High Fidelity” scribe D.V. DeVincentis on a dramedy with the great Rebecca Hall and Bruce Willis, I would probably put that flick on a highly-anticipated list. Minutes into “Lay the Favorite,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, one knows there’s nothing to anticipate. Unless you anticipate boredom.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
Poor Rebecca Hall (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” “Parade’s End”) gives it her absolute all as the naive, sweet Beth Raymer, a girl who becomes a good luck charm to the horribly named Dink Heimowitz (Bruce Willis), disrupting his business and marriage to the high-maintenance Tulip (Catherine Zeta-Jones). An incredible number of talented people flirt around the fringe of this oddball romance,...

Cinelinx takes a gamble on the Lay the Favorite Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A stripper named Beth (Rebecca Hall) leaves her small Florida town to find a better life in Las Vegas, but things get complicated when she forms a relationship with a bookie (Bruce Willis). Based on the book by Beth Raymer. Also stars Catherine Zeta Jones, Vince Vaughn and Joshua Jackson.
Directed by Stephen Frears
The Delivery
What in the world happened, Stephen Frears? The director of The Queen, High Fidelity, and The Grifters managed to take an interesting, real-life story (by the real Beth Raymer) and a great cast (Willis, Jones Hall, etc.) and somehow made a completely average film. Lay the Favorite isn't bad, but for all the pedigree involved, you expect much better.
Lay the Favorite should have been a quirky character drama, but fails to provide an interesting story or engaging characters. Somehow, the screenplay made gambling seem boring,...

Professional odds-maker Dink (Willis) is running a small-time sports gambling enterprise when a former stripper named Beth (Hall) promises to help him score big — and turns his world upside down. Lay The Favourite
Stars: Bruce Willis, Rebecca Hall, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joshua Jackson, Laura Prepon, Vince Vaughn, Joel Murray, Frank Grillo | Written by Beth Raymer, D.V. DeVincentis | Directed by Stephen Frears
As a big Bruce Willis fan, I’m interested to see that he’s picking some slightly offbeat roles recently. Firstly in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom (surely the equivalent to Arnold Schwarzenegger starring in a Coen Brothers film or Sylvester Stallone leading an Alexander Payne flick) and now in Stephen Frears’ Lay the Favourite, which shares its theme of the trials and tribulations of young woman maturing into adulthood with his previous feature, Tamara Drewe.
The film is led by an irrepressibly bubbly Rebecca Hall, who plays Beth Raymer, a vaguely idiot-savant character and private dancer who moves to Las Vegas to seek her fortune. There she falls under the wing of Willis’s charismatic bookmaker, Dink, who employs...

Ahh, the year in skin.
It's not the golden "Deep Throat" years of the '70s anymore, it's the age of the Internet and no one really goes to the movies to see nudity, but women proved they were hungry for some beefcake with the wild success of "Magic Mike." Meanwhile, A-list actresses bared it all for some compelling reasons that were absolutely integral to the script… hehe.
Here's our comprehensive list of major celebs who got in the buff so perverts could post screengrabs on Internet forums.

Kristen Stewart, 'On the Road'
She may be a trampire in real-life, but Stewart's also got a polyamorous streak in the movie version of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," a.k.a. "This Seemed Cooler When I Was in High School English Class." As free spirit Marylou, Stewart gets to have a go with both Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund...

Lay the Favorite
Directed by Stephen Frears
Written by D.V. DeVincentis
USA, 2012
Perhaps the most surprising element of Lay the Favorite, a pastel-colored look at the world of legal and illegal bookmaking and gambling, is its eerie sincerity. Within the first five minutes, the bubbly, ditzy lead character (Rebecca Hall) has left her job as a private dancer after a client pulls out a gun and she states, irony-free, that she wants to move to Las Vegas and become a cocktail waitress. Lay the Favorite, in this scene and in many others, is reminiscent of the fake movies fictional characters watch in real movies, empty and soulless yet filled with a number of recognizable actors stranded in underdeveloped roles.
Hall is Beth Raymer, whose consistently cheery nature endears her to a number of Vegas gamblers, chiefly Dink Heimowitz (Bruce Willis), who runs a gambling operation and is in need of...

Editor’s note: Lay The Favorite hits limited release this Friday, though it doesn’t seem like a solid bet for your movie-going dollar. Find out why with the following Sundance review, originally published on January 23, 2012. There’s one thing that becomes quite clear, quite quickly as Stephen Frears‘s Lay The Favorite begins: not everyone should do voiceover work. Rebecca Hall (who stars as Beth Raymer) sadly falls squarely into that category and her baby voice stays with her throughout the entire film, grating on already-frayed nerves. Lay The Favorite tells Beth’s baby-voiced story as she tries to figure out her purpose in life at a job that will be stimulating and make her good money (don’t we all, Beth). The best place to pursue such a dream? Las Vegas, of course! Beth packs up her life (and dog Otis) and heads west with stars in her eyes. Ready...

“You can't blame Stephen Frears for trying” seems to be the mantra for "Lay the Favorite," a mild romp through the T&A world of Las Vegas, gambling and literary adaptation. After all, "High Fidelity" is an iconic film to obsessive nerds (Need proof? See: every listicle on the Internet) and Frears is no slouch to crafting strong and/or sexy female characters (Tamara Drew, Cherí, The Queen). But what happens when he tries to mash them up and form the unholy love child of a stat geek and a bubbly idiot savant who used to be a stripper? You get Beth Raymer (the film is based on Raymer's memoir), played by a nearly unrecognizable Rebecca Hall, a down-on-her-luck stripper who goes from trying to set the world handstand record with a suburban client and sipping martinis to giving a freebie to another customer, who proudly shows off his big...

This past summer, director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Queen) saw his adaptation of Lay the Favorite hit theaters in the UK, but the film has yet to be released in the United States. Well, that changes this winter as the film will hit VOD on November 2nd and theaters on December 7th. Bruce Willis is showing no sign of slowing down his career as of late, especially since he hasn’t appeared to have aged in the last two decades or so. Every year, many films hit Sundance packed with stars, and featuring a solid name behind the camera, but not all of them live up to expecatation. And by most accounts, "Lay The Favorite" is one of those movies. Boasting a cast that includes Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Vince Vaughn, Laura Prepon, Joshua Jackson and more, with Stephen Frears at the helm, the potential was there for a better-than-average comedy, but judging from the notices out of Park City, the result was less than that. But with those kinds of names, it will spur interest no matter what, and via their VOD shingle Radius, The Weinstein Company are bringing the movie to screens this fall. Rebecca Hall is one of my favorite up and coming actresses in Hollywood. The British actress has made shown up in brilliant movies since she’s “arrived,” with The Prestige, Frost/Nixon, Vicky Christina Barcelona and The Town on the resume. Now she’s tackling a leading role in the ghost horror film The Awakening set in post-wwi England, directed by Nick Murphy and also starring Dominic West and Imelda Staunton. Fangoria recently caught up with the actress, and we have the interview below:
Fangoria: Is The Awakening the first lead you’ve been offered in a film of this type?
Rebecca Hall: No, I’ve been offered horror movies before, but I didn’t feel the parts were strong enough or the story interesting enough to take those, and this one was. I didn’t set out to make a horror movie per se; I’m just interested...

Historical action film about early Us president drives a stake through the heart of the Men in Black
Fresh blood
A cursory glance reveals that king of the heap is Timur Bekmambetov's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, with £1.12m. However, in reality, the high-concept historical actioner landed in fifth place for the weekend, with £744,000. The discrepancy between those two figures is accounted for by preview takings on Wednesday and Thursday, enough to send the film leapfrogging over its rivals. Bekmambetov's film was always going to be a tricky sell at the UK box office: films about early Us presidents have tended not to flourish here (anyone recall Jefferson in Paris, from 1995?). As for star Benjamin Walker, he's hardly a marquee name in the Us either, but at least he enjoys some profile there for stage hit musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, about another early Us president.

With The Grifters nothing but a memory, Stephen Frears's latest hustling tale is an oddly lacklustre and forgettable affair. Rebecca Hall is typically watchable as Beth Raymer, a wannabe-cocktail-waitress with a head for figures who is smitten by Bruce Willis's avuncular bookie, to the annoyance of his facelifted wife, played with relish by Catherine Zeta-Jones. Meanwhile Vince Vaughn coasts as an obnoxious loudmouth with bad dress sense. Apparently it's a true story, although the increasingly frenzied plotting rings rather false – albeit with a few tight-lipped laughs along the way.

After a brief slump in the late 1990s, he bounced back with the sublime, Best Picture-nominated The Queen, but has failed to find firm footing since, turning out a triple-header of underwhelming works – Cheri, Tamara Drewe, and now, Lay the Favourite.
For those not acquainted with American gambling laws – that it is illegal in anywhere other than the state of Nevada – an odd feeling might emerge during the opening scenes of Fears’ latest offering. The focus on simplified gambling terminology will probably seem like a painfully redundant waste of time to non-American viewers, tiresome if obviously shoehorned into the script for the sake of its native audience. Frears’ task was to act as a middle-man and subtly massage this gambling-for-dummies approach – rather,...

Based on a true-life memoir, Stephen Frears's gambling caper isn't interesting or very comprehensible
Stephen Frears is a supremely accomplished director, but perhaps there was little he could do with this garbled and unsatisfying story about gambling. It's an activity that may well be enjoyable to do, but not to watch, or to hear about, from excitable people with no aptitude for making their addiction comprehensible to outsiders. Lay the Favourite is based on the avowedly true-life memoir by Beth Raymer, a wide-eyed young woman who came to Las Vegas looking for nothing more than to be a cocktail waitress, and wound up working for some high-rolling gamblers, running cash and making bets. Rebecca Hall is manically vivacious as Beth, and Bruce Willis shouts a lot as her kindly employer Dink. In fact, everyone does a very great deal of tiresome shouting and yelling, as if they're auditioning for...

If the experiences of sex industry worker, amateur boxer and sports-betting expert Beth Raymer really did happen as they do in her memoir, boy has she lived a full life already by the age of 36. Perhaps reading her book will shed some light too, on Stephen Frears’ screen adaptation of the same name, Lay the Favourite, that feels like a barrage of disjointed, far-fetched scenarios smothered in rapid-fire, betting-heavy jargon, leaving everyone a loser.
Rebecca Hall plays ex-stripper Beth who goes to Las Vegas to do something meaningful, and ends up becoming a sports-betting expert overnight when gambling guru Dink Heimowitz (Bruce Willis) goes with a hunch and gives her a job working the sportsbook system to their advantage. After falling for the older guy, Dink – and making an enemy of his high-maintenance and jealous wife, Tulip (Catherine Zeta-Jones), spurned Beth then falls for visiting journalist (Joshua Jackson). However, she...

The first trailer for Stephen Frears movie ‘Lay The Favorite’ has been released. The gambling picture features Bruce Willis in the starring role as a professional bettor by the name of Dink Helmowitz who finds himself in a variety of tough situations, one of which includes his jealous wife who has it out for his attractive employee, Beth Raymer, a former waitress, played by Rebecca Hall. Willis is also joined by an amazing cast line up of Josh Jackson from Fringe, the always hilarious Vince Vaughn, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Laura Prepon of That 70′s Show, Frank Grillo, John Carroll Lynch, and Joel Murray of Mad Men. It’s time for another entry in our regular feature, the poster round-up, and yet again it is another jam-packed update, with new posters for Magic Mike, Looper, three new posters for Step Up 4, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, 360, Take This Waltz, Lay the Favourite, King of Devil’s Island and the UK quad poster for The Chernobyl Diaries.
Magic Mike
To a rebellious 19-year-old kid (Alex Pettyfer) looking for independence from his family, Magic Mike (Channing Tatum) seems like the perfect role model: he’s got a nice car, a nice apartment, and a seemingly endless supply of women. What’s his secret? He’s a male stripper, and when the kid dives headlong into Magic Mike’s world, his mad dancing skills and hunger for excitement make for an unforgettable summer. Sexy, funny and shocking, this film is a hedonistic thrill ride with a powerful undertow. A...

Watch the UK Trailer for Stephen Frears' Lay the Favorite, starring Bruce Willis, Rebecca hall, Vince Vaughn, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Joshua Jackson. Written by D.V. DeVincentis based on Beth Raymer's "Lay the Favorite, Take the Dog," the memoir follows a group of math geeks in their fifties who figure out how to work the sportsbook system in Las Vegas for their own benefit. The center point is a woman who is in her early thirties plagued by a series of bad choices who achieves a redemption of sorts when she meets and then becomes involved with the gamblers. Also in the cast are Laura Prepon, Frank Grillo, John Carroll Lynch, Joel Murray and Corbin Bernsen. Be sure to read our review of the film at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Bruce Willis' output has been somewhat hit and miss over the past few years (and, arguably, throughout his entire career), so at this point I'm never quite sure what to expect when he turns up in a new movie. The fact that Lay the Favourite is directed by Stephen Frears (The Grifters, High Fidelity) is a good sign, but something about this first trailer makes it feel uncomfortably close to a direct to DVD movie. Of course, Bruce Willis isn't even actually the lead in this movie; that would be Rebecca Hall, best known for her performances in Ben Affleck's The Town and Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Based on the book by Beth Raymer, Lay the Favourite is about a woman who gets involved with a group of Vegas gamblers, landing a job as an assistant for a bookie named Dink. It feels like a heist comedy of sorts,...

British director Stephen Frears is one of the most eclectic if not dependable filmmakers out there, whether he's exploring 18th-century French sexual mores in "Dangerous Liasons," Chicago record store nerds in "High Fidelity," or the Queen of England in…"The Queen."
Now he's turned his attentions to the high-stakes world of sports gambling as seen through the eyes of a bubbly young minx named Beth Raymer in the new trailer for "Lay the Favorite."
Raymer may seem almost cartoonishly free-spirited as played by Rebecca Hall, but the real-life Beth actually lived the hustler's life as bookie in Las Vegas under the thumb of a shifty operator named Dink (Bruce Willis), which she chronicled in her memoir of the same name with colorful candor.
So far reaction to the film out of Cannes has been mixed, especially in regards to Hall's seemingly out-of-whack portrayal, but if you watch footage of the...

Here's the first trailer to a new film called Lay the Favorite, which stars Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta Jones, Joshua Jackson and Vince Vaughn. Don't let the cast fool you though, the film didn't get a lot of positive reviews up at The Sundance Film Fest where it premiered. However due to low expectations it got a somewhat positive review from our own Ben P who said he "found the movie to be a pretty straightforward dramedy that didn't disappoint or excite. It's just sort of...there." You can read his full review for it here.

Today we have the trailer for "Lay the Favorite," starring Bruce Willis, Rebecca Hall, Joshua Jackson, Frank Grillo, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vince Vaughn. It is directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen). Check out the trailer below. Plot: Beth Raymer (Hall) is a beautiful girl with a big heart who leaves her dancing job at a Florida strip club to become a Las Vegas cocktail waitress. In walks Dink (Willis), a professional sports bettor who sees through her bubbly exterior and offers her a job placing wagers all over town to gain an advantage over the casinos. Her surprisingly impeccable mind for numbers soon cements her status as Dink's good-luck charm, until his gorgeous-but-frigid wife, Tulip (Zeta-Jones), starts to get jealous. Faced with no other choice but to fire Beth, Dink's luck runs out when she heads to New York to work for a smarmy bookie, a turn of events that...

High Fidelity is one of those rare, infinitely rewatchable films. While not really remarkable in any specific way - other than it's bliss-inducing soundtrack - the movie simply has a great pace, fun and interesting characters, and a compelling storyline that everyone alive can relate to. Now, twelve years later, writer D.V. DeVincentis and director Stephen Frears have reteamed for Lay The Favorite, a project based on the memoir by Beth Raymer. It premiered at the top of this year at the Sundance Film Festival and actually doesn't have a Us release date as of yet, but today the first trailer has arrived online. As the film will be debuting in the UK and Ireland on June 22nd, it's no real surprised the the first preview landed on the UK site Handbag.com (via HeyUGuys). Watch it below! Here's the thing: "Lay the Favorite," based on Beth Raymer's memoir about the sports betting world, didn't exactly get glowing reviews when it debuted at Sundance this January. Despite starring Bruce Willis and being directed by "High Fidelity's" Stephen Frears, most reviewers agreed that it was pretty dull.
We're going to see it anyway. Why?
Because of Josh Jackson, of course. Our "Fringe" hero (and forever Pacey Witter) plays a journalist who falls for the wrong girl -- Beth Raymer (Rebecca Hall). Her ties to Dink Heimowitz, who has been cooking the Vegas sports gambling books, put them all in danger.
But that's not important. Here's what is important: Joshua Jackson, sunning himself and talking about baby oil. Joshua Jackson, making out with a hot girl in a hallway and wanting to talk about it. Joshua Jackson, putting his journalism career on the line to run away with the woman he loves.

Rebecca Hall, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bruce Willis try to game Las Vegas in the latest trailer for "Lay the Favourite," an upcoming dramedy directed by Stephen Frears. The film is based on Beth Raymer's memoir of the same name with Hall starring as Raymer. The rough contours of a story are laid out: There's Vegas. There's betting. There's love. There's trouble with the law. There's Hall flaunting her beauty to the benefit of herself and her associates. Beyond that it's unclear, but with production based in Vegas, New York City and New Orleans,...

Earlier this year, Stephen Frears, director of High Fidelity and The Queen took his new film, an adaptation of Lay the Favorite to Sundance, but the reviews were less than stellar, and almost every writer I talked to about the film had nothing good to say about it. Of course, the film is still on its way to theaters (hitting the United Kingdom first this summer), and now the first trailer from across the pond is here for the dramedy centered on a thirty-something woman (Rebecca Hall) who gets involved with a group of geeky older men (including Bruce Willis) who know how to work the bookie system in Las Vegas. Here's the first trailer for Stephen Frears adaptation of Lay the Favorite from HeyUGuys: Beth Raymer (Rebecca Hall) is a beautiful girl with a big heart who leaves a Florida strip club to become a Las Vegas cocktail waitress.

While he is currently pondering a Freddie Mercury biopic, The Queen helmer Stephen Frears debuted his most recent film at Sundance this year, and it was’t pretty. Eviscerated by many, including us, Lay the Favorite features a strong cast of Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta Jones, Joshua Jackson and Vince Vaughn.

Check it out below as audiences will get to judge for themselves later this year, when The Weinstein Company expects to release the film.

Lay the Favorite
Directed by Stephen Frears
D.V. DeVincentis (screenplay)
2012, USA
Stephen Frears’ Lay the Favorite isn’t in the least entertaining or populated by characters that anyone would wish to know. It’s incredibly hard to conceive of it’s main character actually existing as we see her represented and absolutely confounding that such a vacant person could end up getting a book or movie deal off of a story that leads us right back to where we start. These are people that live for money and excitement but visibly little else. A very easy going Bruce Willis plays Dink (a name brought up repeatedly for added humor as if it’s a clever running joke) a seasoned Vegas bookie. He takes high end bets while assisted by a small but loyal crew. Into his operation enters Beth Raymer (Rebecca Hall) a bubbly, naive young woman in short shorts with big ambitions.

Breaking: One day after the close of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, The Weinstein Company has finally closed a film acquisition deal. TWC completed a U.S. rights deal on the Stephen Frears-directed Lay the Favorite, the D.V. DeVincentis-scripted adaptation of the Beth Raymer memoir about a young woman who gets in with some older gamblers who figure out how to manipulate the Vegas sports book system. Bruce Willis, Rebecca Hall, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Vince Vaughn, Laura Prepon and Joshua Jackson star. The deal was in the $2.2 million range. Distribution is being worked out for the fall, and the plan is a combination of day and date theatrical release in 50 markets and release on VOD. That gives Tom Quinn and Jason Janego–who were hired last fall to start a multi-platform releasing company for TWC–a solid star-studded project to work with. The deal was brokered by the film’s financier,...
