This post contains spoilers for "Narvik: Hitler's First Defeat."
While "All Quiet on the Western Front" is getting all the awards season love, becoming a surprise Oscar contender after a relatively quiet festival run in 2022, there is another European war movie making strides on Netflix. I'm talking about "Narvik: Hitler's First Defeat," the thrilling 2022 Norwegian war drama focusing on the pivotal Battle of Narvik at the beginning of World War II. Dubbed the first Allied victory, the battle was a significant chapter in the course of the war, and the film does a good job of showing why it was important, and how both sides responded.
Perhaps more importantly, the film excels at portraying the effects of the war on the civilians of the eponymous Norwegian town, forcing them to fend for themselves while opposing forces use them for their own benefit (without a care for those caught in the...

Narvik (Kampen om Narvik – Hitlers første nederlag) is a Norwegian film directed by Erik Skjoldbjaerg starring Kristine Hartgen, Carl Martin Eggesbø and Henrik Mestad.
This is a movie that despite its good work technically, does not manage to be a “great movie” which is very likely what was expected of a production like this one.
A good movie, but not memorable.
Storyline Narvik
Norway, a supposedly neutral country during World War II, was a target for the Germans and British because of the minerals and raw goods that left from the small town in the north of Norway for both war contingents. Obviously, the equilibrium was broken and Norwegians had to take part in a battle that lasted two months.
This was the first time in which Hitler´s army was defeated in the war.
And, technically speaking: the movie is pretty good tecnically. Norway has managed to re-invent itself and,...

“Betrayed” doesn’t depict anything that hasn’t been seen many times before, but that’s less a knock on its lack of originality than a sad reflection of the fact that millions suffered similar hardships, tragedies and horrors during the Holocaust. Based on a true story, Eirik Svensson’s WWII saga focuses on the Braude family, who along with hundreds of fellow Norwegian Jews were rounded up and sent to work camps or, via the SS Donau cargo ship on Nov. 26, 1942, to Auschwitz, from which they never returned. , and no less valuable — or powerful — for being regrettably familiar.
Svensson opens “Betrayed” with Nazi collaborator Knut Rød (Anders Danielsen Lie) tranquilly dispensing orders to his men to detain the remaining Jews left in Oslo. It’s a small, quiet vision of the bureaucratic work upon which fascist genocide is built, and it casts a mournful pall over the ensuing action,...

Telepool Consolidates Int’l Distribution Business
Telepool’s international distribution division Global Screen has consolidated all sales and acquisition activities across both TV and film content, with Julia Weber appointed to run the entity as Head of International Acquisitions and Sales. Alexandra Heidrich, previously in the role, will depart the company. “The traditional international distribution model is very much a thing of the past. More than ever, we need to engage with creators earlier, and operate as reliable and fully committed co-producers – no matter the type of content. Theatrical films and TV product are each core to our international business. Consolidating everything under Julia’s experienced and proven leadership is a logical next step, and will allow us to be strategic, nimble and growth-focused,” said Telepool CEO Jan Frouman.
