Ava DuVernay’s return to feature filmmaking doubles as a thematic homecoming. Origin, loosely adapted from Isabel Wilkerson’s tome Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, is, at its core, a deeply sincere story of love and grief.
DuVernay’s interest in animating the inner lives of Black women stretches back to her feature debut, I Will Follow, in which she explored the contours of a young woman’s heartache after the death of her aunt. She built on it with Middle of Nowhere, a remarkable second feature about a nurse confronting her relationship with her incarcerated husband. And although Selma is about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the film complicates Coretta (Carmen Ejogo), positioning her as King’s strategic co-conspirator instead of just a dutiful wife. In all of these films, DuVernay centers the emotional landscape of Black women, reflecting on how interpersonal and structural constrictions shape their behaviors.

It was announced yesterday that HBO Max had cancelled Titans and Doom Patrol after four seasons, which prompted some fans to place the blame on James Gunn and Peter Safran. As the pair became co-chairmen and CEO’s of DC Studios late last year, you would think that they did have a hand in ending Titans and Doom Patrol, but James Gunn took to Twitter to say that the decision to end both shows actually preceded their appointments.
The decision to end the series precedes us. But I certainly wish the best for the talented group of creators, actors, and the rest of the crew that produced both shows. https://t.co/jdqDc9TqU1

Even superheroes can’t defeat the looming threat of a series finale. “Titans” and “Doom Patrol,” two live-action series based on DC Comic book characters, will end after their respective ongoing fourth seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.
The two series have an interesting development history, beginning as original programs for DC Universe, a streaming platform focused on superhero content, launching their first seasons in 2018 (for “Titans”) and 2019 (for “Doom Patrol”). After HBO Max launched, DC Universe was rebooted as a free comics subscription service, and the shows moved to the new streamer. “Titans” premiered its fourth and now final season this November, while “Doom Patrol’s” launched in December; both seasons consists of 12 episodes split into two six-episode parts, with the final batches of episodes set to premiere at unannounced dates.

Doomsday is drawing near in the latest installment of HBO Max‘s Doom Patrol.
The trailer for Season 4, which was released Tuesday, Mark Sheppard’s Willoughby Kipling warns: “Something very big and very dangerous is headed our way. Immortus is real, and it’s coming. We are wandering into the literal end of days as we speak.”
The Immortus Project appears to be a looming threat, explained only as the pursuit for immortality. It’s not clear what big bad the Doom Patrol will be facing, but it may have something to do with the DC supervillain General Immortus, who was introduced in the 1950s as an enemy of the Doom Patrol. In the trailer, the group eventually comes to the conclusion that the only way to win is to travel back in time.

Our favorite band of heroes should get well prepared.
HBO Max dropped the official trailer for Doom Patrol Season 4 Thursday -- and we have many questions.
Willoughby Kipling tells the gang atop the trailer that something "very big and very dangerous is on its way" that will bring the world to an end.
“Immortus is real, and it’s coming. We are wandering into the literal end of days as we speak.”
Immortus is well-known to fans of the comic books, and if you're not up to speed, you should be prepared for lots of high-octane drama.
The season's theme seems to be whether the Doom Patrol gang will want to save the world or think about their own happiness.
There is a sense of dread lingering over the trailer. As a result, it wouldn't surprise us if the series was preparing for its endgame.
Many changes are going on at Warner Bros. Discovery,...

HBO Max announced the season four premiere date of the superhero misfits series Doom Patrol along with a teaser trailer at New York Comic Con, where several cast members previewed what’s in store for their characters.
Fans can expect the DC series to return on Dec. 8, with the teaser trailer encouraging viewers to “hold on to their butts” with a very musical introduction to the mysterious (and vicious) creatures known as the were-butts. The creatures have been conceived by a shadowy agency “as a weaponized force of nature” that see the Doom Patrol forced to team up to take them down.
In the more than one-minute look at the new season, these teethy butt monsters are featured hilariously singing a Music Man classic as part of their debut to a few powerful officials. At other points, they are seen being tossed around by Doom Patrol members.

Just past the halfway point in a completely bonkers Season 3 that has involved time travel, were-butts (you heard me), Dead Boy Detectives, and a trip to the Afterlife, HBO Max has renewed Doom Patrol Season 3 for a fourth season.
From villains with no body (see what I did there?) to monsters that lurk in the minds of children to time-traveling amnesiacs, and, yes, including recurring appearances by zombie were-butts (!), how will Season 4 up the ante?
"Doom Patrol reimagines one of DC’s most beloved groups of superheroes: Robotman aka Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser/Riley Shanahan), Negative Man aka Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer/Matthew Zuk), Elasti-Woman aka Rita Farr (April Bowlby), Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero) and Cyborg aka Victor Stone (Joivan Wade).

We’re very excited for next Saturday’s DC Fandome. Honestly, the DC Entertainment-run virtual event looks way more impressive that Comic Con at Home, boasting 24 hours of content for fans of the page and screen stories of DC Comics to nerd out over. DC just released the complete schedule for the event and, while there’s plenty of big screen stuff to look out for, from Wonder Woman 1984 to The Batman, there’s also some pretty exciting TV content on the docket. Here’s the complete DC TV schedule, with times (in Et) and panel descriptions.

Speed and star-power: Those are the two clear goals for the DC Fandome virtual event on Aug. 22, which released its full schedule Friday.
Over 100 hours of content stretching across the film, TV and comic book properties from DC Entertainment will unfold over a 24-hour period on the Saturday event, including panels featuring the filmmakers and casts of “The Batman,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” “The Suicide Squad” and the Snyder Cut of “Justice League,” and the casts of TV series including “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “Batwoman,” “Black Lightning” and “The Flash.”
Most of those panels, however, will run just 15 to 30 minutes in length. The panel for the upcoming feature film version of “The Flash,” with filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, star Ezra Miller, and screenwriter Christina Hodson, will clock in at a speedy 10 minutes. (The briefness of that panel could also be due to unresolved questions surrounding a video of Miller appearing...

For Diane Guerrero, taking on the role of Crazy Jane in HBO Max’s “Doom Patrol” isn’t as easy as just playing a kooky character from a comic book series. Jane actually has 64 personalities, the result of childhood sexual trauma.
“It’s like, ‘Of course I’m doing this role. It’s because I am’ — and this is a word I used to use to apply to myself — ‘I am crazy,’” Guerrero jokes on Wednesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast The Big Ticket. “I know what all of these emotions mean and I know what these emotions are on a heightened level.”

Doom Patrol Season 2 Episode 1
The first season of Doom Patrol was the kind of outing that shouldn’t have worked. The band of misfit heroes (who could swear) felt like a premise that would wear thin – as did the novelty of Alan Tudyk as a narrating super villain, and a talking cockroach with apocalypse on his mind. Yet, the show successfully managed a balance of oddball concepts, violence, humor and strong development of characters struggling with serious trauma. Now, with the second season premiere, “Fun-Size Patrol,” the show returns with solid footing that manages to be heartbreaking, and hilarious. And yes, there is still a lot of swearing.
Picking up a short time after the events of the first season finale – where Tudyk’s villain Mr. Nobody was thwarted, a giant cockroach and rat made out, and The Chief (Timothy Dalton) was revealed to...

Jeremy Carver has big things planned for Doom Patrol season 2. Literally.
The first season of the DC Universe series about super powered, and always bickering, misfits ended with most of the team shrunk to action-figure size. With the sophomore outing of the series debuting June 25, executive producer and showrunner Carver thinks it’s time for the characters to grow: physically and emotionally.
Along with waging war against near-omnipotent villain Mr. Nobody, as well as an apocalyptic cockroach, the team of outsider superheroes fought their internal demons, and one another, in a season that was comedic, surprisingly poignant, and delightfully bizarre.
Bizarre is part of the Doom Patrol DNA. Based on the DC comic created in 1963 by writers Arnold Drake, and Bob Haney, and artist Bruno Premiani, the book about Robotman, Negative Man, and Elasti-Girl took an even more eccentric direction when writer Grant Morrison took over in 1989. Morrison’s run...

"The wolf pack's hunting us." Sony Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for a WWII naval action movie titled Greyhound, which is also the name of the ship that leads the way in this story (in case you're wondering why it's called Greyhound). Inspired by actual events, the screenplay is written by Tom Hanks, who also stars in this as Captain Ernest Krause. He leads an Allied convoy of 37 ships being stalked by Nazi U-boat wolf packs across the North Atlantic ocean towards the UK. The full cast includes Elisabeth Shue, Stephen Graham, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Maximilian Osinski, Lee Norris, Rob Morgan, Devin Druid, Michael Benz, and Matthew Zuk. This is now set to open in theaters everywhere in the middle of June this summer. Lots of CG naval warfare shots in this trailer, but it still looks super intense. As expected. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Aaron Schneider's Greyhound,...

“Doom Patrol” has been renewed for a second season and will soon be available outside of DC Universe.
At San Diego Comic-Con, series executive producer Jeremy Carver and star Diane Guerrero announced not only that the show will be back for another season but also that it will be available on HBO Max, the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service. Season 2 will air simultaneously on both services and Season 1 will become available on HBO Max as well once Season 2 begins airing in 2020.
“Doom Patrol” has proven to be the most well-received DC Universe series to date, with Season 1 holding a 95% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While nothing has been officially announced, running “Doom Patrol” on both DC Universe and HBO Max could serve as a bellwether for bringing other DC Universe shows into the HBO Max fold. Industry insiders have previously expressed skepticism about the future of DC Universe, saying they...

Doom Patrol heads down to Florida for a confrontation with an alligator...and a certain robot-man's feelings.
This Doom Patrol review contains spoilers.
Doom Patrol Episode 11 Review
Doom Patrol is something really quite special. More than any other superhero show on television, this series manages to elicit some sort of reaction from me each week. And with “Frances Patrol,” the series now offers up a beautiful story about moving on, and letting go of a loved one – and it involved a giant friggin’ robot-eating alligator. How’s that for variety?
When this series began, I was concerned if Matt Bomer and Brendan Fraser would be relegated to cameos and voice work, but that has thankfully not been the case. Especially with Bomer’s Larry Trainor, the series has allowed him and Matthew Zuk (who plays the bandaged Trainor) to be a tormented self-loathing gay man slowly coming to terms with the negative energy inside him,...

Considering Matt Bomer regularly appears at the top of “Sexiest Man Alive” lists and has voiced Superman, the most famously hunky superhero of them all, it might be considered ironic that in his new role in the DC Universe show “Doom Patrol,” he plays a character whose entire body is covered in bandages.
However, at an advance press screening for “Doom Patrol” episode three at Soho House on Tuesday night, Bomer insisted he was delighted to be playing a character with more complexity and depth than other more prominent superheroes in the DC Universe.
“People always say, ‘What about Superman,’ they bring that up constantly, and I think this character is just as, if not more, interesting,” he said.
Bomer plays Larry Trainor (a.k.a. Negative Man) on “Doom Patrol,” the third show to stream on the DC Universe platform after “Titans,” which premiered in October 2018 and was recently renewed for two more seasons,...

The first episode of Doom Patrol is a fun introduction to the world's strangest heroes.
This Doom Patrol review contains spoilers.
Doom Patrol Episode 1
Superheroes are weird. Set aside the DC holy trinity, and you still have a guy whose cosmic jewelry doesn’t work on anything yellow, another who talks to fish, and a Martian. And I love it. Yet, despite the acceptable level of weirdness we have learned to embrace from the movie A-listers of Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and now Aquaman -- and the TV headliners of The Flash and Green Arrow -- there is still The Doom Patrol. And this crew so weird they are in a League of their own.
Which is what brings us to DC Universe’s new show, a fun celebration of the super-weird that almost feels like a capes-and-tights tale via Ryan Murphy. Let’s call it American Super Story.

The meaning of superhero takes on a new definition as Doom Patrol gets underway.
It features an unlikely group of individuals all brought together by the scientific genius of The Chief.
As DC Universe calls it, they're part support group, part Superhero team, and they're brought together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence – and to protect the earth from what they find.
Of course, they don't know that from the onset, and their origins can be heartbreaking. What appears to set this heroic group apart from the others currently on television is their sense of loss and need to band together as a family.
Doom Patrol Gets February Premiere Date
Once again, a well-known if untapped comic series serves as the foundation for an unexpected family drama with a helluva lot of exciting action and bursts of irresistible humor.

DC Universe’s next live-action TV series is coming to the streaming service this Friday in the form of Doom Patrol. As you surely know, it follows a bunch of disparate superhumans – most of whom we previously met on Titans – who see their powers as curses more than gifts. And now, this new 4-minute trailer gives us a great taste of the gleefully weird, kooky tone of the show and its eclectic cast of characters.
So, who are the Doom Patrol? Well, first we have Clifford Steele/Robotman – as voiced by Brendan Fraser and played in the flesh by Jake Michaels – a former race car driver rebuilt in a mechanical body after an accident. April Bowlby, meanwhile, is Rita Farr/Elasti-Woman, a former 50s movie star whose skin turned elastic after she was infected with toxic gas.
