Vulture is holding the ultimate Reality Rumble to determine the greatest season of the greatest reality-tv shows, from The Real World on. Each day, a different writer will be charged with determining the winner of a round of the bracket, until Vulture's Margaret Lyons judges the finals on March 25. As round one continues, author Emma Straub pits Project Runway's second season (Santino vs. Andrae vs. Kara) against the first season of The Hills, when Lauren first moved in with Heidi.Reality television can make something out of nothing, a feat both of today’s combatants accomplished in wildly different ways: Project Runway is a show that conjures a workplace out of nothing, and The Hills conjures a plot out of nothing. It is an unfair fight. The Hills debuted in 2006 as a high-gloss, quasi-scripted sequel to MTV’s Laguna Beach, a show put on the air in the hysteria...

NBC finally made it official that Jimmy Fallon will become host of The Tonight Show in 2014, settling weeks of rumor saying this was about to happen. Now there's the question of the new Late Night host.
The Walking Dead has promoted three cast members to regulars — Chad L. Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green and Emmily Kinney (that's Tyreese, Sasha and Beth)
Syfy has ordered a new competition series, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Exit is based on a Japanese show and follows four teams trying to make it out of a series of four rooms, facing a variety of puzzles.
I may love watching Mad Men but covering it in the listings is a pain thanks to generic episode teasers like (I kid you not) "Don launches a new campaign," "Peggy ponders taking a trip" or "Pete encounters an interesting stranger.

"Sex and sexuality is not about whether your elbows or knees are wrinkled. A man turns to you and says: 'I love the way you laugh.' That's what's turning him. They love a line around your eye or your mouth, because it tells them you've laughed and you're going to laugh and be forgiving and embracing," she told British magazine Ok! Hey Simon Doonan, what do you know about the hotel industry?
Give an average bloke a room key and a mint on his pillow and suddenly that person turns into a rule-breaking, wild-eyed, Charlie Sheenian sexual outlaw. Stick an average broad in a hotel bar and she turns into Rielle Hunter. A friend of mine who works in the hotel industry keeps me abreast of all the latest trends in anti-social and revolting guest behavior. According to my “hospitality insider,” nefarious guest activities are only becoming more foul and disturbing. Though he enjoys his work, he has started to feel somewhat constrained, specifically in regard to fabric choices. Whether for upholstery, drapes, or bedding, every textile he selects must now be Bcp-resistant, by which he means resistant to—drumroll—blood, cum, and poo.

The Guardian has a piece on the new documentary being made about Chris Crocker, and how it seeks to show that in the modern age outcasts can have intimate relationships with thousands without contact. What drew me to the article was Jake Shears, who said his "husbro" was making the film.
The Help won the weekend box office with $20.5 million, followed by Planet of the Apes in second. A distant third was the best a new film could muster, with Spy Kids 4 raking in $12 million, followed by Conan the Barbarian in fourth at $10 million, then Fright Night at a sad $8.3 million. Maybe it's time for an original idea, Hollywood?
Towleroad has a fantastic picture of Gwen Stefani's son Zuma wearing a Captain America costume while having his toenails painted. Stefani's eldest, Kingston, is quite the little fashion plate himself, accessorizing without regard to gender norms.

There are two key ways to determine the “winners” and “losers” of Wednesday night’s American Idol “Songs From the 21st Century” telecast: Focus entirely on the singing — an antiquated approach that would have Nigel Lythgoe snickering into his post-show tea and crumpets (because you know that’s exactly how he gets his snack on). Or, instead, obsess over the extraneous details of the 90-minute episode, like the hidden subtext of the judges’ critiques, the crafty editing of contestants’ pre-performance interview packages, and other miscellaneous details (i.e. Scotty McCreery’s unfortunate wardrobe choices; or the lack of restraining order...

Wednesday night (March 2) was Ladies Night on "American Idol." Half-priced appletinis! Your friends get in for free! DJ Suave will be spinning the jams he thinks you love all night long! Casey Abrams' facial hair will not — I repeat not — be allowed entry!
In actuality, the Top 12 girls show meant half-hearted versions of previous "Idol" stars' breakthrough singles, half-successful up-dos and a few stealth performers who have been laying in the background waiting for the first opportunity for their competition to attack.
(Speaking of waiting to strike, it's about time my own "Idol" show emerged from the bushes to devour the Internet. "Idol Party Live" premieres this Thursday night (March 3) at 10 p.m. Eastern on MTV.com. My co-host will be Entertainment Weekly's hilarious Annie Barrett, and our guest will be Liz Lee, star of the hit MTV show "My Life As Liz." Come hang with us!)

A few months back the story was the Hulu deal, how a brand like Mattel could skip the TV networks all together, backing a half-hour reality show at a fraction of the cost without sacrificing the reach. It was groundbreaking in concept, the first half-hour on Hulu’s still modest list of web-only originals—but inevitably this day would come too. Today the 8-episode series Genuine Ken debuts on Hulu, pulling back the veil to see just pioneering this thing really is. The setup is, for better or worse, the standard competition reality format, drifting somewhere in between The Apprentice and Project Runway. Its purebred name is Genuine Ken: The Search for the Great American Boyfriend, plucking eight would-be ideal boyfriends against each other in hope of finding the prototypical ‘Genuine Ken.’ In the show’s amusing tongue-cheek fashion, they group are all given pet names vaguely tied to each suitor’s traits: Crooner Ken,...

I wish that Heroes and Project Runway were still in the same corporate family, because NBC loves cross-promotion. Tim Gunn could swing by the Heroes set and do something about these terrible, terrible clothes. Just look at that picture on my left. That was practically the whole episode. Two characters wearing literally the same thing – black jacket, black jeans, black shoes – walking around a studio backlot and muttering resentful stage whispers in each other's general direction. It was like watching eleventh graders film a half-hour Spanish-language Waiting for Godot for Spanish class, except the eleventh graders would have at least worn some interesting clothes.
