What if right now, right under your feet, there was a different world happening that no one had any idea ever existed? That's the premise of the book by authors Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams and The Rite director Mikael Håfström is interested enough to do a little spelunking.
The Wrap is reporting that Håfström will direct a film version of Tunnels, a fantasy adventure book series, for Relativity Media. Tunnels, follows two teenage boys who discover a secret civilization beneath the streets of London. All this subterranean wonder has a downside, however. They also find evil forces who threaten to destroy the world above.
Authors Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams have completed five sequels. The sixth and final book in the series, Terminal, is scheduled to be published in the U.S. this fall.

1408 and The Tomb director Mikael Håfström is set to direct the big screen adaptation of the fantasy adventure novel Tunnels for Relativity Media. About three years ago Splice director Vincenzo Natali was attached to direct the film, but that obviously didn't pan out.
The book series comes from Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams. They've completed five books in the series, with the sixth and final book being released this fall. You can bet that the studio is hoping this turns out to be a successful film franchise. The property was discovered by Barry Cunningham, who is the man credited with discovering Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. Here's what he had to say in a statement,
Only a few times in my life have I felt that rush of imagination in a story that I know is going to sweep up an audience in its grip, 'Tunnels' made me believe in adventure,...

The newest set of movies based young adult books is making its way to the forefront. The “Tunnels” series focuses on an underground civilization that is secretly located beneath London, England. The protagonists are two teenage boys who uncover this society as it waits for a savior, but the deeper the children go the closer they are to confronting an apocalyptic evil. Along with the script, this adaptation now has a director.
Relativity Media has signed Mikael Håfström who has directed such horror films like “1408” and “The Rite.” He is currently working on the Sylvester Stallone-led “The Tomb.” He will be working on a script by Andrew Lobell which was originally based on the work of Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist.
The series of books have been written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams. Sales of the book have reached the one million mark and have been published in about forty countries.

With a filmography that includes the paranormal spookfest 1408, the dark marital thriller Derailed, and the exorcism drama The Rite, Swedish director Mikael Håfström isn't exactly synonymous with kid-friendly filmmaking. But there's a first time for everything, and a press release reveals that Håfström has signed on to direct Tunnels, an adaptation of the 2009 young adult novel written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams. Relativity Media is producing the film, which follows two teenage boys who discover a secret underground civilization beneath the streets of London, waiting for a hero to come to their aid. Read on! Tunnels is the first of six books in the series, so there's obvious franchise potential in mind here for the studio. The Amazon synopsis of the first book says the action begins when the father of one of the protagonists disappears and the boy goes searching for him, which sounds an awful lot like...

Relativity Media has officially announced that Mikael Hafstrom (“1408″, “The Rite”) has signed on to direct “Tunnels” for them. Hafstrom takes over behind the camera for Vincenzo Natali, who was originally attached to direct the movie adaptation of the popular Young Adult book series way back in 2010. He has since moved on, apparently. Based on the series of books by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams (they’ve written five sequels with the sixth and final book in the series set for this Fall), the movie version will be set “beneath the streets of London, two teenage boys discover an incredible, hidden underground world where a secret civilization has been desperately waiting for a hero to save them all. The deeper they go, the closer they get to unearthing an evil that could destroy the world above and put an end to the lives they once lived.” Yikes. Shoulda stayed topside, boys.

The Young Adult fiction category is proving to be something of a mixed bag for studios. While Twilight and The Hunger Games have been huge hits, there are still those, such as the recent Beautiful Creatures, which just don’t seem to strike a chord. That doesn’t seem to be stopping anyone, with news that The Rite director Mikael Hafstrom will direct an adaptation of Tunnels.Written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams, Tunnels is set beneath the streets of London where two teenage boys discover a previously hidden world and a civilization dwelling there that is in need of a saviour. Why a saviour, you ask? Because there’s naturally a seething, hideous evil force lurking there, just waiting for the chance to destroy both the world below and our own. Post-Splice, director Vincenzo Natali has been attached to a few potential projects. They've all been literary adaptations, including Jg Ballard's High Rise, Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams' Tunnels series, and most excitingly, William Gibson's Neuromancer. Natalis has ticked the box marked "none of the above" for the time being though, since his immediate next film has just been announced as Haunter.Described as a "reverse ghost story", Haunter stems from an original screenplay by Brian King, who also wrote Natali's Cypher in 2002. It seems to have shades of The Others and Beetlejuice, in that it's told from the perspective of the haunter rather than the haunted: in this case a girl called Lisa who's been manifesting in the same house since she met an unfortunate end in 1986. She sees an opportunity for some closure when new girl Olivia moves in.So what's happened to Neuromancer? Immediatey the...

A Sci-fi thriller called Splice has been snapped up by Warner Bros for release on June 4 this year.
Written and directed by Vincenzo Natali, it explores the morality of genetic experimentation and stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as scientists who create a new life-form, with disastrous consequences.
It's produced by Guillermo del Toro, who directed Cronos, Mimic and Pan's Labyrinth and is making The Hobbit two-part adaptation.
Splice elicited an excellent response at this year's Sundance Film Festival but, judging from user reviews on Internet Movie Database, it has also come in for some savage criticism from horror fans who saw it at other film events. A movie that obviously isn't for everyone. We'll know for sure if it has wide mainstream appeal later this year.
