At the McC Miscast Gala on March 30, which featured the likes of Jeremy Jordan, Uzo Aduba, Laura Benanti, and Sarah Paulson, there was one person whose name most audience members didn’t recognize. When she spoke, however, she was cheered more loudly than anyone. Dominique Fishback, graduate of the McC Theater Youth Company, was presented with the Alumna Award that evening. Since her completion of the company’s theater program, the young artist has written and performed her own one-woman show, “Subverted,” appeared in “Blue Bloods” and “The Knick,” and shared a stage with Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer. She’s a standard of success within arm’s reach for over 110 students from all five boroughs of New York City participating in McC’s Youth Company this year. The yearlong program that sees students focus on voice, movement, monologues, and dialogue in the theater emphasizes playwriting and acting, enlisting professionals...

Today we have the first photos of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl in the upcoming "Supergirl" TV series, which co-stars Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra "Alex" Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow "Winn" Schott, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and, in mystery roles, Dean Cain and Helen Slater. Check out the photos below. The costume of Supergirl was designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the costumes for "The Flash" and "Arrow" film credits include "Alice in Wonderland," "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Chicago." "In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past," she explained. "But more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today." "Supergirl" is based on the characters from DC Comics and centers on Kara Zor-El, who comes to Earth after escaping the destruction of Krypton. After many years hiding her abilities,...

Following months of casting announcements, speculation and rumors, production on CBS’ forthcoming comic book series Supergirl geared up this week. With the pilot primed and ready for take off, a few snaps of the first production slate hit the web, rather unceremoniously. That moment of excitement has since been overshadowed, however, by our first real look at Melissa Benoist suited up as the titular superhero.
Talk concerning the costume of Kara Zor-El for the impending small screen reboot stirred up back in January, when CBS chairperson Nina Tassler dropped a couple of hints stating that the finished spectacle was an “awesome costume.” On the basis of this first couple of snaps, we’d have to agree entirely with Tassler’s comments.
Maintaining a certain degree of “costume consistency” across related DC properties was a chief concern for CBS. So, the network opted to employ the Oscar-winning skills of Colleen Atwood,...

Jeremy Jordan has just been added to the impressive cast of the Supergirl TV series.
It's getting tough to keep up with all the Supergirl TV series news at this point, but we're doing our best. It does at least seem that just about every new role that gets cast is a fairly important one. This time it's Jeremy Jordan as Winslow 'Winn' Schott. Does that name ring a bell? Superman fans may know him as fairly minor villain, the Toyman.
We have an official description of the character from the casting breakdowns that surfaced a while back:
"This twentysomething tech whiz/Comic-Con stalwart toils for CatCo as a programmer, unaware of his own potential. Unware of her secret, he carries a torch for Kara, whom he lives next door to."
That won't end well for either of them, will it?

The bubbly and vivacious Anna Kendrick is quickly becoming the poster girl for stage-to-screen musical adaptations. She shines as Cinderella in Rob Marshall's forthcoming "Into the Woods," kicked ass in "Pitch Perfect" and now stars in "The Last Five Years," which RADiUS grabbed at this year's Tiff. Featuring the smash stage production's original book and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, the film chronicles the rise and fall of a love affair and marriage: Jamie (Jordan) is a novelist, Cathy (Kendrick) a struggling actress, and their story is told through song across different time periods. This looks to be a movie for die-hard musical fans. Reviews out of Toronto were mixed, but Variety wrote, "It's easy to fall in love with Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan in this heart-breaking musical two-hander, as they retrace a love affair from opposite ends." RADiUS-twc releases the film stateside on February 13th, 2015, right in time for.

It’s a good time to be a musical on film, as the genre is experiencing a bit of a renaissance. And if said movie has singing and self-deprecating humor, who you gonna call? Anna Kendrick. Her latest offering is an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical “The Last Five Years.” The play deals with the birth and death of a love affair between Cathy Hiatt (Kendrick) and Jamie Wellerstein (Jeremy Jordan). Instead of a linear story, it’s written using an intercutting timeline device. Jamie's narrative takes story forward from the beginning of their love through the end, while Cathy’s starts at the end and goes back in time to when they first met. When we spoke to Kendrick back in September, she talked about the challenge of improv when barely any of your dialogue is spoken and how corsets can derail the goal of singing live. "The...

We've seen in Pitch Perfect, and the trailers for the upcoming Into The Woods, that Anna Kenrick has one hell of a singing voice, but next year will see her really exercise it in The Last Five Years, based on the off Broadway musical of the same name. Directed by P.S. I Love You's Richard Lagravenese, the film charts the romance between Cathy (Kendrick) and Jamie (Jeremy Jordan) as both their careers put pressures on both their lives. Told almost entirely through song, the movie tells each side of the story in reverse: Cathy's side from the end of their marriage, while Jamie's takes us right back to the beginning of their relationship. The first trailer below is absolutely bursting with energy, and this movie should be a must for anybody loves musicals, featuring some fantastic performances from the lead pair. Check it out below. The upcoming big screen adaptation of off-Broadway musical "The Last Five Years" tells the story of the breakup of a marriage, but flick's first trailer proves that heartwarming moments keep equal time with that ultimate heartbreak.
"Years" follows Cathy (Anna Kendrick), a struggling actress, and Jamie (Jeremy Jordan, of Broadway's "Newsies" fame), a successful writer, throughout the titular time period, from the moment they meet, to falling in love, getting married, and the relationship's ultimate unraveling. That story is told from both characters' perspectives, as Cathy sings about the end of their marriage and works backward to their beginning; Jamie, meanwhile, sings about their relationship in sequential order.
It's a quirky concept, but Kendrick and Jordan's Tony-nominated pipes -- and the earnest, funny, soaring songs sprinkled throughout this trailer -- make us confident that the flick will be an entertaining experience.

If you have any doubt that Hollywood is putting their eggs in Anna Kendrick's musical basket, her next few films say it all. She steps into Disney's fairy tale world this holiday season with "Into The Woods," gets back on campus next summer with "Pitch Perfect 2," and has "The Last Five Years" coming out of Tiff and into cinemas. And the first UK trailer for the latter has arrived. Based on Jason Robert Brown's off-Broadway production, and adapted for the screen by writer/director Richard Lagravenese, the story follows the up-and-down relationship between budding actress Cathy (Kendrick) and rising writer Jamie (Jeremy Jordan), as it jumps back and forth through time, from the dizzying highs of love, to the depths of heartbreak. And well, that's about it. If you're a fan of musicals (or the original stage show) you'll certainly dig this, but the one-dimensional nature of...

Cindy Lauper and Kinky Boots, Elton John and Billy Elliot, Alan Menken and Sister Act, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Bring it On, Marc Shaiman and Catch Me if You Can. It seems as if Broadway is on a movie-adaptation streak, no? Movie based adaptations have won seven of the past fourteen Tony Awards for Best Musical! This season alone will see Honeymoon in Vegas (based on the 1992 film of the same name), musicals based on Oscar-winning films Dr Zhivago (which recently announced its star) and Gigi (for what it's worth, its pre-Broadway engagement stars Vanessa Hudgens), as well as Bull Durham. Down the line we’re still expecting First Wives Club, Amelie, American Psycho, The Bodyguard and Ever After to make it to New York in the near future.

Here are two bold predictions about what will not be coming to Broadway anytime soon: Duck Dynasty: The Musical, and Allison Williams as Peter Pan in Finding Neverland. Anything else you read about either show is speculation. Kindly unknot your knickers.
First, the Duck decoy: The New York Times did a rather extraordinary favor on Thursday for the producers of a Las Vegas revue based on A&E’s Duck Dynasty franchise. The Times put this very silly story on page A1 and, in the headline, attached the word “Broadway” to the enterprise. This caused a number of otherwise sane theater denizens to foam at the mouth over the prospect of an invasion by reckless red-state redneck homophobes into the sacred PC precincts of Times Square, which must by any means necessary be kept safe for the roving gangs of Elmos, Batmen and premium-price ticket sellers desperately trying to sink their hooks,...

But the problem is that Kendrick keeps getting offered parts in musicals she can't turn down. At the Toronto International Film Festival, she premiered The Last Five Years, an independent musical based on Jason Robert Brown's cultishly adored off-Broadway musical about a young couple's out of sync romantic life.
It's almost wall-to-wall singing, alternating parts between Kendrick's aspiring actress and Jeremy Jordan's rising novelist. Directed by Richard Lagravenese (P.S. I Love You), The Last Five Years was received rapturously at its premiere Sunday night by an audience full of devoted fans to the musical. The Weinstein Co.' boutique label Radius acquired the film ahead of Toronto,...

For studios looking to buy at the Toronto International Film Festival, Chris Rock emerged a very hot property. The comedian’s Top Five sparked a bidding war, according to multiple reports, with Paramount emerging the victor and scoring the worldwide rights to the film, the studio announced today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio paid around $12.5 million for the film.
“Chris and I go back decades, both personally and professionally, and so I am particularly proud to have watched his career grow to its highest heights over many decades,” Paramount Chairman and CEO Brad Grey said in a statement.

Two years ago, Anna Kendrick exploded with "Pitch Perfect." The surprise smash hit gave the actress a platform to sing and show off her comedic chops in a leading role, and audiences were hooked—the movie earned over $110 million worldwide (not bad for a comedy about acapella groups), and the soundtrack sold over 1 million copies. While Universal is getting the sequel ready to drop next year, Hollywood didn't wait long to give Kendrick another vehicle to display her unique, combined array of talents. "The Last Five Years" is the full blown musical that Kendrick seemed destined to make, but unfortunately it's too much of a good thing. Adapted from Jason Robert Brown's off-Broadway production by Richard Lagravenese, the story is fairly straight-forward. Starting at the end, the movie centers entirely on Cathy (Kendrick) and Jamie (Jeremy Jordan), hopscotching through time and tracking their romance, careers and the eventual downfall of their marriage.

We're big fans of Anna Kendrick here at the Playlist. But then, what kind of monster isn't a big fan of Anna Kendrick? She's smart, funny, honest, outspoken and enormously talented, and even the occasional "Rapture-Palooza" can't cause too much of a problem. The actress is wildly busy, with seven movies released, or due for release, this year, from serial killer dark comedy "The Voices" to this Christmas' mega-budget musical "Into The Woods," and will continue her path to world domination with next summer's sequel "Pitch Perfect." But first, she's got another musical, stage adaptation, "The Last Five Years," directed by Richard Lagravenese, and co-starring Broadway star Jeremy Jordan. The film, which deconstructs a love affair between an actress and a novelist, just premiered at Tiff, and we should have our review for you in the next day or two. But to tide you over, EW has the first clip from the movie,...

Exactly three months ago, I sat in the audience at the Tonys as Jason Robert Brown collected best original score and best orchestrations prizes for his musical adaptation ofThe Bridges of Madison County, which starred a fantastic Kelli O’Hara but had recently closed after struggling at the box office and being denied a best musical nomination. It was, as Brown conveyed from the podium, a very bittersweet night for him.
Sunday night was, perhaps, even sweeter for Brown, I sensed from a seat directly behind his at the Toronto International Film Festival’s world premiere of The Last 5 Days, Richard Lagravanese‘s big screen adaptation of a musical of the same name for which Brown wrote the book, music and lyrics back in 2001 en route to an off-Broadway debut in 2002 and revival in 2013. Indeed, as Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan belted out the show’s poppy numbers,...

The Toronto International Film Festival is known for showing some of the best films each year. Some of my personal favorite films have come out of Tiff, including Dallas Buyers Club (2013), Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012).
Trying to narrow down a list of films I am most excited to see from this year’s Tiff is a difficult process. After all, there are 393 films being shown. Based on plot summaries, entertaining trailers and actors I admire, I’ve managed to pick 10 films I am hoping to catch once they are publicly released.
The Judge // Tiff Premiere: Sept. 4
Dir. David Dobkin
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga & Billy Bob Thornton
The film follows Hank (Downey), a Chicago lawyer, who returns to his small, Indiana town in the wake of his mother’s death to find his estranged father (Duvall) accused of murder.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Well, a few things, maybe.
It’s not at all hard to understand why Harvey Weinstein turned to Diane Paulus to overhaul Finding Neverland, the musical based on Miramax’s 2004 movie starring Johnny Depp as Peter Pan creator J.M Barrie. Paulus brings a broad catholicity of taste to her work as artistic director of the non-profit American Repertory Theatre, and that wide-ranging sensibility has led to her own souped-up, physically dazzling revivals of Hair and Pippin, both of which moved to Broadway.
When a 2012 tryout in Leicester, England under the leadership of Rob Ashford was met with yawns, Weinstein sent Finding Neverland back to the drawing board. In addition to hiring Paulus, he replaced Allan Knee (who wrote The Man Who Was Peter Pan, the basis for the film) with James Graham as book writer. U.K. pop-music specialists Gary Barlow...
