Who doesn’t love a creepy novel once in a while, eh? I mean, I know I do. Horror is in my blood and has been for a long, long time, and so it’s only natural that I’m a fan of horror fiction too. I’ve read it for decades, beginning with my childhood, spent reading Point Horror books with titles like The Babysitter, Trick or Treat and The Funhouse. As I’ve gotten older (and older) I’ve sought out horror books that had something unique about them, or that sounded up my alley. I tend to like horror novels with a cinematic and comic style, books that I can almost See on a screen as I read. That’s the sweet spot.
So, I thought it might be cool to highlight ten horror novels, most of them fairly recent, that you should check out if you haven’t yet.

They say that all good things must come to an end, and this eBook only release of Isolation brings David Moody’s zombie writing to an end, collecting his remaining fiction together and drawing a line underneath his undead work. Never say never, of course, because horror has a way of coming back from, ahem, the dead, but for now those of us who have been on Moody’s journey through the zombie apocalypse can step into his cadaver filled world one final time.
There are five stories in this collection, the main one being the titular Isolation, a novella based on a screenplay that Moody had been working on developing into a movie with Colchester based director Will Wright but which had, as these projects often do unfortunately, stalled. Telling the tale of Keith, a socially awkward young man who initially finds himself alone among the suddenly deceased rest of the world,...

After being introduced to Dana Fredsti’s take on the zombie apocalypse last year in the form of Plague Town and Plague Nation (read my review here), I’ve been looking forward to the concluding part of the trilogy and I’m happy to report that I haven’t been disappointed.
Picking up right where Plague Nation left off, our heroine Ashley Parker is plunged straight into a battle with the undead, Fredsti launching into her trademark breakneck pace that doesn’t let up until the end of the book. As the title suggests, the zombie plague has progressed from its initial outbreak in Redwood Grove (a la Racoon City), via the whole of America, and now to the rest of the world, having finally gone airborne.
Ashley’s story is focused on San Francisco, where she and the rest of her Wild Card team – people who have survived zombie...

This Is Horror editor Michael Wilson certainly has a knack for picking great stories for inclusion in the website’s ongoing series of chapbooks and the latest, Water For Drowning by Ray Cluley, is no exception. Following in the very large footsteps of past entries like David Moody’s Joe & Me, Joseph D'Lacey's Roadkill, Pat Cadigan’s Chalk and Stephen Graham Jones’s The Elvis Room, Ray Cluley has crafted a mesmerising tale of a man and his mermaid.
Told from the point of view of Josh, the crass, obnoxious front man for a band who gig around the south coast, Water For Drowning is the story of Genna, a girl who believes that her destiny is to become a mermaid, and the ultimately devastating impact that she has on his world. Initially more than happy to play along with her belief in...

We’ve become accustomed over the years to having several different versions of films made available to us, whether the theatrical release, the director’s cut, the work print or even the bootleg Producer’s cut (bonus points if you know which movie I’m referring to with this one*), but with The Cost Of Living, David Moody has done something similar with a story.
As he explains in his introduction to this kindle only release, the idea for the story had been kicking around for a few years, and at one point was to have been included in the Autumn universe as one of the many short pieces of complementary fiction that were collected in his anthology The Human Condition and fleshed out his world of zombies.

Tuesdays are when new books are typically released, and horror fans usually don’t have too much trouble finding something to read. There is Amazon of course and publishers like Samhain and Cemetery Dance…
We also boast authors ranging from "The King" himself to Dan Simmons, Robert McCammon, the late Thomas Tryon, Tim Curran, Aussies Stephen Irwin, Brett McBean, and Aaron Dries as well as Brits such as David Moody, anthologist Stephen Jones, and Mark Morris, to name just a very few.
But what if you long for the paperback originals which seemed to flood bookstores back in the 80s or want to read even earlier horror that is long out of print? What to do? Well, you turn to Valancourt Books to assuage those yearnings. And we recently spoke with Ryan Cagle, one half of the publishing team that brings those long unavailable titles to life for readers to enjoy again,...

Ever had the feeling that somebody was watching you? That eyes were upon you, recording every movement, every breath, every nervous darting of your eyes as you try to figure out just why the icy fingers of paranoia are lightly tracing themselves up and down your spine? We’ve all been there from time to time, but spare a thought for the Keene family, who quite literally become the centre of attention in Nathan Robinson’s novel Starers.
It all starts when Dylan Keene arrives home with his brother Lennon after a session in the pub. They barely notice an old man standing at the bus stop across the road looking at the house, but when he’s still there in the morning, and then the next door neighbour turns up in the back garden – stark naked - also looking at the house,...

Chalk by Pat Cadigan is the latest in the interesting and enjoyable series of chapbooks that This Is Horror began publishing about a year ago. Previous entries have included Joe & Me by David Moody and Roadkill by Joseph D'Lacey, both of which received justifiably favourable reviews here at Shadowlocked, and Chalk maintains the premium standard that has become synonymous with not only this series of chapbooks, but with the This Is Horror website.
Chalk by Pat Cadigan is available from the This Is Horror website, along with the other superb chapbooks in the series. Thanks to Michael Wilson for the review copy.

Zombies are all the rage (virus) at the moment, from the televisual delights of The Walking Dead to the cinematic spectacle of the recent World War Z adaptation, via video games – notably the upcoming Dead Rising 3 – and books, including David Moody’s Autumn series and Dana Fredsti’s Ashley Parker novels (reviewed by Shadowlocked here).
An area that doesn’t get quite as much attention, though, but really should is the tabletop game arena (i.e. board or card games). In recent years there has been an outbreak of zombie themed games, including two different Walking Dead offerings and the very enjoyable Zombies!!! (see Shadowlocked’s review here) but as fun as they are, they can’t compare to the glorious anarchy that is Munchkin Zombies.
If you’ve never played Munchkin (in any of its varieties) the rules are pretty simple and can be picked up in no time at all.

Zombies!!! They're everywhere these days. World War Z is being waged at the cinema, The Walking Dead are shuffling across our television screens, and David Moody is the King of the literary cadaver with his Autumn series. So what better time for Shadowlocked to assemble its game playing avengers to put the 'does what it says on the tin' Zombies!!! board game through its paces.
Set in a city that unfolds over thirty tiles that each contain nine playing spaces, Zombies!!! is reminiscent of golden age games like Mystic Wood and Sorcerer’s Cave where the actual play area is revealed as the game progresses, ensuring a different experience every time you play.
Each turn begins by drawing one of the pre shuffled board tiles and adding it to the existing town, ensuring that, as in real life, roads marry up with...

They say that when you die, your life flashes before you, that time slows to a crawl and every moment seems like a lifetime in itself. Roadkill by Joseph D'Lacey is the short story equivalent of this maxim, the entire tale taking place over just one hundred seconds, and works well for it.
That we know little of this society beyond the tantalising glimpses we are given is both intriguing and deliciously frustrating, with the whole tale feeling as though we've stumbled across a lost chapter from a larger epic, but this is no bad thing, as the best examples of short fiction are often brief glimpses into other lives, other realities, often with no tangible resolution as is the case here. Harlan Ellison is a master of this approach, and D'Lacey channels his work here while retaining his own voice, a voice lest we forget that no less than...

As regular Shadowlocked readers will know I’m a major fan of all things zombie, and have watched, read, played and written about more z-related things than is possible healthy for one person, but like the walking dead themselves, I’m always hungry for more.
In terms of zombie literature, I think it’s fair to say that the shelves are positively groaning with hordes of undead adventures, and that for every masterpiece like Max Brooks’s World War Z, Brian Keene’s The Rising, David Wellington’s Monster trilogy or David Moody’s Autumn series there are a horde of pale imitations that leave a taste in the mouth not unlike Boomer bile.
Thankfully Dana Fredsti’s Plague Nation is way up the z-scale in terms of enjoyment and is a welcome addition to the party. Upon receiving Plague Nation and its predecessor Plague Town I was initially fearful...

On Wednesday 20th March 2013 one of the finest and most influential British writers of our lifetime passed away at the age of 69. James Herbert OBE provided pleasure for a great many people through this books and inspired more than a few of the current crop of top British writers including David Moody, creator of the Autumn and Hater series (who wrote his own tribute here), and Joseph Freeman, author of They Come At Dusk, who had known Herbert personally for two decades and valued his friendship and his advice to up and coming writers.
I personally discovered James Herbert back in 1980 when I borrowed a dog eared paperback copy of a book called The Rats from my friend Nick. His dad was a huge reader, particularly of the horror and science fiction genres, and so I was lucky enough to have been exposed to the early works of authors like...

This weekend, 2nd and 3rd November 2012, sees the birth of Autumn: Horror in the East, a brand new, free to attend, horror fiction convention to be held in the seaside town of Lowestoft, Suffolk, the setting for Them or Us, the final book in British author David Moody’s recently concluded Hater trilogy (the film rights for which were picked up by Pan's Labyrinth director and horror auteur Guillermo del Toro). Named after Moody’s innovative quintet of zombie apocalypse novels, the convention will be held at the town’s Aspire Centre and will play host to a dozen of the genre’s best writers, including Joseph D’Lacey, Joseph Freeman, Adam Baker, Iain McKinnon, Adam Millard, Conrad Williams, Andrew Hook, Paul S. In the decade or so since author David Moody first unleashed Autumn, his original and innovative take on the zombie apocalypse, which has since spawned four sequels, a radio adaptation, and a feature film starring Dexter Fletcher and Kung Fu legend David Carradine. He has become the champion of the contemporary literary horror scene thanks largely to his one man revolution in the way new fiction is promoted on the internet. That he has written a brace of brilliant books as well is the icing on the cake.
It is fitting, then, that he has been the inspiration for a new, free, horror author convention, Autumn: Horror In The East, that will be taking place in Lowestoft, Suffolk on 2nd and 3rd November this year. Joining Moody at this seaside soirée will be over a dozen other authors, both up and coming and well established, including Wayne Simmons, Jasper Bark,...

If there's one thing that author David Moody has proved over the last decade, it's that he has a knack for taking what might be otherwise tired concepts and scenarios and turning them on their head. Arguably England's premier architect of post-apocalyptic fiction, Moody has become recently concluded the second of two well received series of books, both of which have documented the end of the world as we know it, and both of which have earned their places as modern horror classics.
The first, Autumn, appeared a decade ago and pre-empted the current zombie zeitgeist by a couple of years when he took the bold, and ultimately extremely smart move of giving the first of what has turned out to be a five book sequence away for nothing on the internet, which is where I first discovered it shortly after it appeared. Autumn took the classic zombie apocalypse scenario...

For the last decade, British author David Moody has given the post apocalyptic fiction market, and in particular the zombie genre, a much needed shot in the arm. Back in 2001 he unleashed the first of five novels in what was to become his Autumn Quintology (hey, if Alien can have a Quadrilogy, then Moody can have his Quintology), taking the undead into previously uncharted territory and focusing not so much on the carousing cadavers themselves as the human survivors of the somewhat mysterious event that turned rush hour into hush hour.

Dana Fredsti is writer and an actress with a background in theatrical sword-fighting. She has appeared in Army of Darkness and her love of the undead has resulted in Plague Town, a zombie novel that will be published this month.

*full disclosure: a paperback copy of this novel was provided by St. Martin's Griffin.
Author: David Moody.
Publishers: St. Martin's Griffin.
United Kingdom author David Moody's journey through the Autumn novels has been a long one. It has been at least 10 years since Moody wrote his first novel, Autumn. This first novel dealt primarily with the characters Emma and Michael who both appear in this fifth novel, Autumn: Aftermath. Many other characters appear in this latest novel, which released March 13th. The culmination of 10 years in a zombie apocalypse, understandably, comes to violent head with two factions around Cormansey and Chadwick vying for their own space. Philosophies come into conflict too and so do characters, despite a dangerous environment.
Fans of this series of novels will recognize Michael. He is one of many survivors who are immune to an airborne infection that has wiped out 99% of the United Kingdom population.

The sun blazed in the almost cloudless February sky as we rolled up to the heavy steel gate of an industrial estate some fifteen miles west of England's Worcester region to report for our basic training. A young guard with a severe blonde crew-cut and dressed in heavy body armour waved us through with one hand, the other resting on the stock of a large gun that hung at his side, the black metal accentuated by his bright yellow high-vis vest.
There were eighteen in our group, with another half dozen having arrived from other locations, including a Scottish couple from North Wales and a tall, stocky young lad in a puffer jacket with a bruised face that suggested he'd already seen some action. Nodding politely at each other, we exchanged muted pleasantries as we fidgeted nervously, unsure of what to expect.

This is David Moody's eleventh book and each novel in the Hater series has dealt with an outbreak of an invisible ever spreading virus. The first novel allowed the virus to spread through the air as those infected with the "hate" turned on family members, friends or a neighbour. In Dog Blood, the so-called "Haters," who have been infected with the virus face the "Unchanged," or those immune. As well, Dog Blood amps up the warfare as these two forces face each other on the battlefield which almost leads to nuclear annihilation for the entire United Kingdom. In all of this, the protagonist Danny McCoyne has found a way to harness his "hate,...

As well, Dog Blood amps up the warfare as these two forces face each other on the battlefield which almost leads to nuclear annihilation for the entire United Kingdom. In all of this, the protagonist Danny McCoyne has found a way to harness his "hate,...

Author: David Moody.
Publishers: St. Martin's Griffin.
Autumn: Purification is the third zombie novel in a trilogy which began with Autumn and later Autumn: The City. There are two upcoming novels from David Moody, which deal with the same setting but with different characters called Autumn: Disintegration and Autumn: Aftermath. There are also plenty of downloadable short stories set in this fictional universe at the author's website. There is obvious evidence that Moody is a prolific writer and that is without mentioning his other zombie series, Hater. In this third novel events tone down again with characters Michael and Emma escaping a bunker overrun by the undead. Here a military unit foolishly (unbelievably?) step out of the safety of their underground lair to take on the zombie masses. They lose. This moves the story forward briefly, while a stop at an airfield cools the tension once again.

Finally, due to the early stages of this film project, the details on Mary Doe are developing, with the film's concept poster left and a synopsis inside.
The plot outline for Mary Doe is here:

Is the release of author David Moody's Autumn: Purification too much to bear? Then today is your luck day. Moody has just released a novella, titled "Duck and Cover," from the Autumn universe. This is a 10,000 word read available at Last of the Living for free!
In this novella, Councillor Ray Cox attempts to deal with a developing tragedy in the town of Taychester. One councillor versus the hordes of undead will clearly leave only one winner. More details on "Duck and Cover" are below, along with a link to said pages.
The outline for the novella is here:
"Councillor Ray Cox never wanted this level of responsibility. He went into local politics for the social status, the financial benefits and the personal perks, never to actually try and help anyone.
Things have suddenly changed.
The population of Taychester has been wiped out, and Ray's the only council member left alive.

J.R. Parks is the author of The Gospel of Bucky Dennis, a southern-fried monster epic featuring the titular anti-hero Bucky Dennis (review here). J.R. Parks has generated a fair amount of internet buzz for his first novel since offering both print and digital versions for free to gain readership. Luckily, I was encouraged by Parks’ fans to snag my own copy for review. J.R. Parks really kicks open the door to the horror fiction scene with his thrilling, action packed story. If you read the review, you know I loved The Gospel. Bucky’s gut-busting one liners, polite southern disposition, and badass monster killing moves stole my heart, so I had to talk with the creator himself, J.R. Parks, to find out the origins of Bucky D. and what we can expect in the future from this promising new talent.

David Moody's book Hater was originally self-published but because of its success and cult following a larger publisher picked it up. Hater follows Danny McCoyne, an ordinary family man trying to support his wife and three children. However, things start to get a bit alarming when a series of violent outbreaks occur across an unnamed British city. Eventually those who appear to have these violent outburst are coined "Haters," but as this affliction spreads across the city, Danny realizes his once previously mundane life is extinct and he and his family must survive in a city surrounded by people who want to kill them.
The novel occurs in much of the same fashion as a zombie novel would occur - except those who are attacking the "Unchanged" aren't dead and they can still talk and function as humans, they just happen to have an animalistic primal urge to kill everyone who is unlike them.

Dog Blood emerged as the second book in the Hater trilogy and this title has been reviewed here: Dog Blood Review on 28Dla. Now, we take a step back and look at the apocalypse that started the series, in Hater.
This book was originally completed in 2006 and this fiction is a slow build to a war between those with bloodlust and those just trying to stay alive. Hater starts in a self-deprecating fashion with Danny McCoyne and this central character attempting to resolve an underachieving streak. His opportunity comes shortly, with a genetic mutation infusing a desire to kill in his blood. The victims multiply and soon the English countryside is run rampant not with zombies, but with crazed killers such as Danny.

Back in 2005 a little-known British horror writer published a series of books under his own publishing banner, Infected Books. These books, collectively called the Autumn Series, had already created quite a sensation when the author, David J. Moody, made them available for download and nearly half a million people did so. Now some big publishing houses have taken note, and on October 26th St. Martin’s will be publishing the first book in the series, Autumn (in the UK Gollancz will be bringing the book out October 28th).
Moody is also the author of Hater, which has been optioned by Guillermo del Toro, and its sequel, Dog Blood. This is a guy all horror readers should take note of.
