This year's Film Independent Spirit Awards – the 38th — announced their nominations. And it's shaping up to potentially be a very good ceremony for Everything Everywhere All At Once, TÁR, Women Talking and more.
The awards will be handed out on 4 March, though other details are in flux: broadcast for the last few years on us cable channel IFC, the ceremony's organisers are currently looking for a new TV home. Still, the celebration of indie movies will go ahead as planned.
And while the Indie Spirits don't tend to be a huge Oscar indicator, we'd expect at least a few of the nominees to also show up on the Academy Awards nominations list, to be announced on 24 January.

Don’t let the lack of theatrical output foul you. Adam Rapp is a man of many hats, alternating between novelist, playwright, television, guitarist, actor (Ryan Piers Williams’ X/Y) and the filmmaker of indie comedy (Tiff 2005 preemed) Winter Passing. Rapp shot his third film Why Now?! in upstate New York for peanuts in comparison to several other films mentioned on this list with this talent pool size (Sam Rockwell, Marisa Tomei, Aya Cash, Brian Geraghty) somewhere in late 2012/2013.

Producer Tory Lenosky passed on this new music video directed by filmmaker Nik Fackler (Lovely Still) with his Icky Blossoms band members Derek Pressnall (Tilly and the Wall) and Sarah Bohling. Two gorgeous actors, lovely black-and-white photography, and one very trashed set. From Fackler and the band:
“We were dealing with a 6 1/2 minute long song. We had to keep things interesting. So it made the most sense for us to direct a short film and approach the video as such. We wanted the quality of it to be that of any film you would see in theaters. Coming from a film background, that is just the way we like to work.
We want the world we create to feel genuine and not thrown together. It is thought out and organized. The world you watch on the screen is as real as what is outside your window, or within your mind.

A number of former “25 New Faces” are involved with the production of Sarah Daggar-Nickson’s short film, In the Forest One Night. They include the cinematographer Sean Kirby and executive producers Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy. Also involved are producers Tory Lenosky and Andrea Roa, and production designer Amanda Ford. Rewards include the director’s own DVDs and books of poetry, and a pitch-meeting with the two exec producers.
According to her Kickstarter bio, Daggar-Nickson “specializes in stories from the darker side of life, where hope shines a little brighter.” I like that. Check out the video and consider supporting.
