Chicago – The legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is 74 years young on April 16th, 2021, and the athlete/activist is more in demand than ever. With a commitment to social justice his entire basketball career, his achievements in that pursuit shine as bright as his record-breaking days on the b-ball court. Photographer Joe Arce publishes an Exclusive Photo of Jabbar from 2016, when he appeared at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, through Anderson’s Bookshop.
Born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor in New York City, and topping out at 7-ft-2-in., Jabbar began dominating the roundball scene early with three straight high school championships in the 1960s. At UCLA, he helped Coach John Wooden win three straight NCAA championships from 1967-69. He began his commitment to social justice during his college years, boycotting the 1968 Olympic team due to the treatment of blacks, converted to Islam during the same period and changed his named to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

After Mars Investigations is hired by the family of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

The most surprising face to join Hulu’s upcoming Veronica Mars revival might actually be behind the scenes: Last September, executive producer Rob Thomas revealed that the show’s writing staff includes none other than NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. (Check out the announcement tweet below.)
The former basketball icon is also a bestselling author who has written many books, including a novel about Sherlock Holmes’ brother Mycroft, in addition to contributing columns to various publications. But how did Abdul-Jabbar find himself penning dialogue for Veronica & Co.?

This being Issue 5 means this is the last issue, in these days of “5 issues make the perfect graphic novel collection size”. Sometimes that artificial restriction does impact on the story, as pacing goes noticeably awry when too much padding is thrown in, or two issues worth of story in one issue. Mycroft Holmes has avoided all that luckily, pacing has been spot on, each development spinning out of the other organically, and I am guessing this series will be as enjoyable as a single session read as it has been in five bite size chunks. Time to chew on that final piece then, let’s hope it’s tasty.
For those that came in late, buy the collection if possible as you’ve missed a lot, but basically Mycroft Holmes has been on a mission to find The Apocalypse Handbook.

This was a pleasant surprise on my reading pile last time round. I didn’t really have that high expectations of a comic featuring Sherlock Holmes’s brother (why would you?) but I like the direction they went, in showing us how Mycroft went to being the pillar of the establishment he is in later years because of the adventures he had in his younger years. Clever idea. This Mycroft is a playboy, equally as smart as his to be more famous brother Sherlock, but more socially active, more handsome, though also more self-serving.
Last issue saw Queen Victoria, and a very good imitator, recruit Mycroft to help avert disaster for the British Empire. A whole load of steampunk tech created under Royal approval, not intended to be weapons but converted into them, had had their blueprints stolen.

I missed the first issue of this series, so will have to try and read that at some point, but the first thing that struck me about this series was the fact it was being written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Yes, That Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Turns out the former basketball superstar is also an actor, award winning writer and a Us cultural ambassador…and a writer of comic books featuring Sherlock Holmes more intelligent brother Mycroft. Apparently Kareem is a bit of a Sherlock fan, and has co-wrote a Sherlock prose novel too. Who says comics aren’t educational, I just learnt a whole lot I never knew. But I digress.
To those not up on their Sherlock Holmes background, Mycroft Holmes is Sherlock’s even more intelligent older brother. The two of them have something of a love/ hate relationship,...

This August, Titan Comics is thrilled to team with NBA All-star and Polymath legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook: a brand new standalone comic book adventure that uncovers the secrets of the elder Holmes brother.
Kareem’s passion for the character is evident, having already written a novel based around Mycroft. His Mycroft Holmes novel published in September 2015 to critical applause. Described by Academy Award winning screenwriter Robert Towne (Chinatown) as “beautifully written and full of intrigue,” the novel garnered high profile media attention around the globe with pieces appearing in Entertainment Weekly, Time Magazine, The Guardianand The London Times, and many more. Covering the announcement, The New York Times noted Abdul-Jabbar’s numerous credits even “rival [that of] Conan Doyle himself.”
