Feature films could be the next big untapped market for unscripted reboots. HBO Max is making a reality competition series inspired by Magic Mike and now Sony is looking at its movie library.
Holly Jacobs, EVP, Alternative and Syndication Programming for Sony Pictures Television, told Deadline that it is about to take a project to market with a non-scripted format based on a Sony movie.
“Now we’re tapping into our amazing feature titles. We’re about to go out with one with an unscripted lens around it. We’re looking at a number of titles. If a title is well known, it’s fantastic to lean in to what is that movie and is there an unscripted way, what would be the basis. People are looking at things that they feel comfortable with, they remember,” she added.

Filming on Outlander season 6 was set to begin last month as part of Starz’s continuing efforts to appease fans of the time-traveling series who hate to wait very long for new episodes to appear, but as the industry shutdown went into effect earlier in the year, not even a Droughtlander could be avoided.

What is a primetime TV hit years in the making? Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time tournament, featuring the three highest-earning Jeopardy! contestants, Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, and James Holzhauer, has dominated ratings this week. With the trio taking primetime by storm, it may not be the last time we see them together on ABC when a Goat winner is crowned next week, the network’s head of alternative Robert Mills told Deadline at TCA.
“Whether it’s something with Jeopardy! or not, certainly I would argue these three guys are the biggest stars in primetime right now. Is there a different game? I don’t know,” Mills said of a possible followup program headlined by Jennings, Rutter and Holzhauer. “But you can’t look at this and not acknowledge the impact that they have had over the 20 years and this past week without saying, ‘Ok. how do we tap...

It was a little stressful and down to the wire as all of Sony Pictures TV’s new series pickups and some of its renewals did not close until the weekend before the upfronts, but the indie studio ultimately saw four of its six pilots picked up, drama For Life and comedy United We Fall at ABC and drama Lincoln and comedy Indebted at NBC. Excluding straight-to-series orders, that is the studio’s strongest conversion ratio in almost a decade.
Additionally, Sony TV saw all of its broadcast scripted series get renewed; its broadcast tally, including scripted and unscripted series, is 11 series on ABC, NBC and CBS.
That is with the studio, which last year did not get a new broadcast series but landed a series order for its NBC pilot La’s Finest at Spectrum, scaling back on broadcast development, developing about 50% fewer scripts with a targeted approach.

When “Shark Tank” producers were getting ready to record the show’s current 10th season earlier this year, they were dealing with a dilemma: There simply wasn’t enough sound stage space on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, Calif, available to record all of the show’s scenes.
“We’ve had some very busy times here,” said Sony Pictures Television alternative & syndication programming executive vice president Holly Jacobs, who oversees unscripted programming for the studio. “Shark Tank” needed 2 sound stages in close proximity, and there simply wasn’t enough capacity left on the lot. That’s when the team started to talk to Sony’s newly-lauched Innovation Studios arm to see if there would be a high-tech fix.
“They came to us with a real-world issue,” recalled Innovation Studios president Glenn Gainor. “Content creation is up, and it is very taxing on sound stages.”

Oprah Winfrey has her own magazine. So do Dr. Oz, the Food Network and Hgtv. Now the ABC program “Shark Tank” is the latest TV creation to test the concept.
Hearst Magazines, the publisher behind those aforementioned periodicals, is releasing a limited-edition “bookazine” celebrating a decade of the reality show in which young entrepreneurs hope to spark their fortunes by introducing a new product or service to a coterie of “sharks,” or bootstrapping business executives. The group has included include billionaire Mark Cuban; real-estate mogul Barbara Corcoran; “Queen of QVC” Lori Greiner; technology innovator Robert Herjavec; fashion and branding expert Daymond John; and venture capitalist Kevin O’Leary.

Reality television was a sea of sensationalism in 2009, from Jon and Kate Gosselin separating just ahead of new episodes of their docuseries, to a suitor on “Megan Wants a Millionaire” named a person of interest in a real-life murder in the middle of that show’s run. Counteracting those headlines came “Shark Tank,” an inspirational unscripted series on ABC that had entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to investors (aka “sharks”) for a chance to change their businesses — and their lives. But the series didn’t just change the lives of those who stepped on the stage; it transformed a broadcast network’s programming strategy and inspired the next generation of innovators.

Sony Pictures TV will undergo an unspecified number of layoffs as part of a divisional reorg, which will include the creation of a direct-to-consumer unit.
In a memo on the changes sent to staff on Wednesday morning, Sony Pictures TV Chairman Mike Hopkins (pictured above) outlined three areas to be reorganized. Hopkins said that the company will combine global networks operations and worldwide distribution/home etertainment into a single business unit that will then operate in a territory management model that “brings together, under a single local leader, businesses that have been historically separate.”
“With this approach, we gain a more efficient structure giving regional leaders, along with their direct reports in each country, the ability to make smart, strategic business decisions, while keeping local consumers at the core of what we do,” Hopkins said.

Additionally, Hopkins, who was CEO of streaming platform Hulu before joining Sony TV last fall, is joining the other traditional studios like Disney, Warner Bros. CBS with a direct-to-consumer push. The company is creating a unit that combines all direct-to-consumer Sony properties, including Crackle, to be run by Eric Berger, Chief Digital Officer of Sony Pictures TV Networks.

Sony Pictures Television is streamlining its international TV operations, consolidating the management of its worldwide channels, home entertainment, and program sales activities under the leadership of Sony Pictures Entertainment distribution president Keith Le Goy.
The restructuring unveiled Wednesday will cost an undetermined number of jobs as the integration of three previously distinct divisions is completed. A handful of senior executive posts in international distribution have already been eliminated. The move to slim down Sony TV’s international ranks was signaled in February when the studio pink-slipped the leader of its networks unit, Andy Kaplan, and home video arm, Man Jit Singh.
The changes come as part of a broader overhaul of studio operations that Sony Pictures TV chairman Mike Hopkins has been hammering out with his boss, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra. Both Fox alums joined the studio last year.
The goal is to eliminate redundancies and de-silo Sony TV.

A string of women have left Sony over the past year — Christine Birch, Paula Askanas, Amy Carney, Andrea Wong and Jean Guerin come to mind — and now this: an email from two male executives inviting women to participate in a Women’s Creative Leadership Initiative “to better equip our women leaders with the tools necessary to amplify their voices.” It was signed by the two male execs: Tom Rothman and Mike Hopkins, the top managers at Sony representing both film and TV. Read the email below.
Bravo if women want to mentor other women and support is given for that from the top management, but the email as written is tone deaf and condescending to women. It suggests that the reason women aren’t being heard is they don’t have the know-how — or “tools” — to communicate. This is not about women being unable to express themselves. This suggests a broader cultural problem,...

Between Celebrity Family Feud, The $100,000 Pyramid, and Match Game, ABC has recently rebooted several old-school game shows for modern viewers. The network’s latest 70s revival is The Gong Show, but the new version of the absurdist talent show will feature a twist: Its performers will be, according to Deadline, “plucked from the Internet.”
In each episode of the rebooted Gong Show, which will be produced by Will Arnett, celebrity judges will watch as contestants share their “non-traditional” talents. For the most terrible acts, the judges can ring a loud gong, which immediately ends the current performance. Those who make it through their sets un-gonged will receive scores from the judges.
In the original version of the show, the contestants were low-rent Hollywood performers. This time, however, ABC will turn to platforms like YouTube, where there is no shortage of creators who enjoy sharing their odd talents. “The comedy culture...
