International players’ ambitions to turn Taiwan into a center for Mandarin-language productions might have given new hope to the island’s struggling filmmakers, but local observers say there is still a long way to go to reinvigorate its film industry.
Industry practitioners and critics say that although networks such as Fox, HBO and Netflix will give Taiwanese talents more international exposure and raise the standards of production, it is more likely to benefit genre filmmakers only. Arthouse filmmakers will have to look elsewhere.
In the decade since the wild success of “Cape No.7” in 2008, Taiwanese films have yet to find a way to sustain the box office miracle set by the acclaimed romantic drama. There have been occasional hits, such as “You Are the Apple of My Eye” (2011), “Our Times” (2015) and 2018’s box office winner “More Than Blues,” which was among the four Taiwanese films showcased at the recent Far East Film Festival in Udine,...

CEO of HBO Asia since 2003, Jonathan Spink has seen the growth of pay-tv in Asia, the moves towards content localization and original production, and has faced up to the challenge of internet-based streaming services. He joins Variety on Monday in a keynote presentation at Hong Kong’s FilMart, and is expected to unveil an expanded slate of local productions.
How does a legacy pay-tv channels group respond to the digital transformation?
Spink: The pay-tv business has been transforming digitally for many years. The issue now is the ease of access and the ability for customers to access your content anywhere. HBO, like other services and other companies, has been working hard on developing the ability to do this. In our instance, that means the development of HBO Go and the ability to roll out content to a greater audience, and for it to be accessible pretty much anywhere by anybody.

When FilMart was launched 22 years ago, Hong Kong boasted of its historic role as the preeminent gateway between China and the rest of the world. That message has had to be tempered in recent years as multiple other cities have emerged with claims to be hubs, and there is now huge direct trade between suppliers and end users. But Hong Kong’s traditional strengths — a free port, the rule of law, stable currency, low tax and excellent infrastructure — have helped it survive as it weathers commercial change.
Hong Kong’s FilMart has also navigated tumultuous changes on its way to becoming the premier film and TV rights market in Asia.
The emergence of mainland Chinese companies as major buyers, sellers and co-production partners in global film and TV fueled the market’s growth and a measure of stability for many years.

Two of the biggest personalities in Asian TV’s C-suite say they have stopped worrying and learned to love disruption.
After being described as “giants,” HBO Asia CEO Jonathan Spink and Turner’s celebrated Asia Pacific president Ricky Ow took the stage Tuesday in Singapore at the Atf Leaders’ Conference. There they interspersed a series of dire predictions with a cheery selection of home truths about managing change. At times the veterans appeared to laugh in the face of adversity.
“All the consolidation and transformation of 2018 will continue in 2019,” said Ow. He tempered that with the idea of growing opportunities for Asian content. “Asian story-telling is growing and increasingly accepted worldwide,” he said.
Similarly, Spink said that the pay-tv industry, where HBO has been a leading name for more than two decades, is facing difficulties as a consequence of expanding viewer choice. “Whether it is the number of devices, channels or the volume of content,...

Television is taking over film festivals, and Tiff has been part of the trend since 2015. That’s when the Toronto International Film Festival first launched its Primetime program, and since then attendees have been treated to premieres like “Black Mirror,” “Casual,” “The Girlfriend Experience,” “The Deuce,” “Transparent,” and more.
In 2018, the TV slate includes big brand names and movie stars — including Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Olsen — as well as a number of lesser known series looking to make their mark. Tiff has seen similar names in the past, but not all of the TV shows debuting at the festival made the impression their distributors, producers, and stars hoped when they landed on TV. Just like the buzziest films may not break the box office, the festival may not elevate TV enough in this peak TV era.
Still, it’s a publicity boon and a helpful prestige play. Amazon, for instance,...

SINGAPORE -- Sony Pictures Entertainment and NBC Universal have exited the 15-year-old HBO Asia premium movie joint venture, HBO Asia said Wednesday.
Time Warner's HBO will now hold a majority stake in the Singapore-based regional network, with Paramount remaining as a minority shareholder.
Details of the new shareholding structure were not confirmed, but insiders believe Time Warner/HBO bought out the two 20% stakes held by SPE and NBC Universal, increasing its holding from 40% to 80%.
HBO also acquired a majority stake in its separate India joint venture, HBO India, as part of the agreement. HBO's stake in India is believed to be 75%, with Paramount holding the remaining 25%.
Although no longer equity partners, the two studios will continue to supply content to the Asian network as part of long-term programming deals, HBO Asia CEO Jonathan Spink said. The licensing agreements do not cover Japan or Korea.
Spink said that the new ownership structure will provide HBO Asia "greater flexibility in pursuing opportunities in Asia."
Korea is a priority in the review process, which is under way, Spink said.
