Spring is now only a few weeks away, and this March at Disney+, a red rose is growing up out of ice frozen ground!
Probably the biggest title on the House of Mouse streamer’s calendar this month is the exclusive streaming premiere of “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” the ground-breaking and record-setting concert film tracking Swift’s Eras Tour. The new “(Taylor’s Version)” edit will feature the concert film in its entirety for the first time, plus the song “cardigan” and four additional acoustic songs.
Also premiering this month, “X-Men: The Animated Series” gets a long overdue revival with the new animated series “X-Men '97,” featuring the returns of original cast members Ray Chase, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, and more. Plus, the British historical adventure “Renegade Nell” finally gets its series premiere at the end of the month.

The ‘Coming Soon to TV’ shelf in your local bookshop will be sagging under the weight of this lot – the thrillers, sci-fi stories, crime novels and non-fiction currently being adapted for television. If you prefer to read ahead before your imagination is sullied by the small screen version, then here’s where to start, from Apple TV+’s adaptation of 1950s-set revenge comedy Lessons in Chemistry and psychological thriller The Crowded Room, to Prime Video’s new Neil Gaiman show Anansi Boys and rumoured Kay Scarpetta series, via Netflix’s true-life opioid drama Painkiller, Itvx/MGM+ historical adventure series The Winter King and many more. Many many more.
It’s too soon to say when we’ll see those planned adaptations below which are yet to film, given the current WGA Writers’ Strike and earth-shifts taking place among the streaming networks whose pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap model is proving unsustainable,...

It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Downton Abbey has had a long and exciting run.
We had six seasons of, holiday-themed specials, and two movies.
Hugh Bonneville, who has been with the franchise since the beginning, thinks the franchise could be over after the latest movie.
“I suspect, if there is [a new series], it would be a reboot. An origin story or something like that,” the star said to The Hollywood Reporter of rumors of a TV comeback.
The star said that Bridgerton highlighted that "there's clearly an appetite for these sorts of shows."
"Bridgerton has been a magnificent success,” he continued.
“So if you can capture the younger generation to enjoy people in frocks, then go for it.”
Bonneville went on to state that it is "immensely unlikely" the original cast would return for future projects.

Highly anticipated Downton Abbey: A New Era made 1.050 million in Thursday previews that began at 7 p.m. at more than 3,300 theaters. It is Focus Features’ widest ever U.S. release and one that comes with a weight of responsibility as the film to finally catapult older demos back into theaters. Focus Features distribution chief Lisa Bunnell recently promised cinema owners it would. “We have our own superheroes,” she said at CinemaCon.
Based on the smash series created by Julian Fellowes, it’s grossed over 30 million internationally. It premiered in the U.K. and Ireland April 29, launching into the top spot across 746 locations (second-widest release after No Time To Die). It’s certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 Audience score and 83 Critics score. Tracking to a mid-to-low teens opening.
This is the second cinematic outing of the phenomenon that aired for six seasons Stateside on PBS (2011-2020) and reunites the full cast.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.
There are high hopes that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will be the film that can attract older audiences back to movie theaters in earnest for the first time since the pandemic began, and by grossing over 30 million thus far internationally, including strong showings in the UK and Ireland, those hopes may yet be realized.
Independent analysts say the film has a decent chance of reaching 20 million at the domestic box office, while the studio is projecting a more conservative opening in the low to mid-teens. Either would be...

The Crawley family and their servants have welcomed royalty to the ancestral estate, but in “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” which opens this weekend in theaters, Hollywood is invading.
Hugh Dancy joins the franchise for the second film, playing director Jack Barber, who makes Lady Mary a lucrative offer to film a silent film at Downton. While Kevin Doyle’s character, Mr. Molesley, is no longer a staffer (he’s the school teacher these days), he can’t help but return to catch a glimpse of the stars in action.
“I’m playing a movie director who comes to Downton with the hope of making his movie there [who] writes a check to be able to do that,” Dancy told TheWrap. “And then as things start to go awry [he] discovers all these people that are willing and able to help him. When we last left the Downton Abbey crew — various Crawleys, assorted Pelhams, some Talbots, and their lively band of servants — things were looking on the up and up. The king and queen had come to visit and, after a predictably amusing series of mishaps and pratfalls, the stopover had proven to be a massive success. Loves were lost and found again. Matriarchs rose and fell. History was kept close and cherished. The estate didn’t burn down. No one died.
It all made for a charming last hurrah, with the film picking up five years after the beloved television series had ended, giving both fans and newbies a glimpse into how the lives and loves of a sprawling cast of characters were continuing to unfold. And yet, while Michael Engler’s film offered plenty of closure on a number of stories and subplots, it also seemed to test the waters...

“Hollywood is the ultimate dream factory … and I need dreams as much as the next man,” says Mr Molesley (Kevin Doyle) in Downton Abbey: A New Era. It’s a line that sums up the mission of the TV series’ second cinematic outing: to continue the “dream factory” tradition. And so the wishes of many a familiar character are granted over the course of two hours — along with plenty of drama.
Written and co-produced by creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn), the sequel opens in 1928, with the wedding of Tom Branson (Allen Leech) and Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton). It’s a chance to reunite major characters in their finery, further blurring the boundaries between the “upstairs” and “downstairs.”

After teasing fans with quick glimpses over the past several months, Focus Features today revealed the official full trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era. The follow-up to 2019’s feature adaptation of the beloved TV series appears to have two major plot strands, one involving a mystery and the other a movie; there’s also a wedding afoot. Check out the trailer above.
In the trailer we see the Crawley family head from the Grantham estate down to the South of France, where Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess has inherited a villa from someone in her “mysterious past.” Her rather shocked relatives wonder who this mystery man was and whether Granny ever thought to turn down the house, “Do I look as if I’d turn down a villa, in the South of France?,” she quips in trademark fashion.

Focus Features has pushed back the release of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” two months and the sequel will now be released on May 20, the company announced Wednesday.
The sequel was previously scheduled for release on March 18. The film will be released in the U.K. by Universal on April 29.
While plot details for the film have been sparse, writer Julian Fellowes told People that Lady Mary continues to run Downton as the mother of the next Earl of Grantham.
“As we know from the last film, Mary may not be the titular head of the household, but she is effectively running the show. We take that further,” Fellowes said. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s, which is merely the beginning of the modern world.”

The British are coming … back!
Focus Features released the teaser trailer for “Downton Abbey: A New Era” on Monday and from the looks of it, the Crawleys will be taking the South of France by storm.
The “Downton Abbey” sequel comes two years after the original movie and five years after the hit TV drama ended its six-season run. The trailer teases Tom Branson’s (Allen Leech) second wedding and includes a confession from Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess.
“Years ago, before you were born, I met a man,” the countess says. “And now, I’ve come into the possession of a villa in the South of France.”
“What?” Michelle Dockery’s stunned Lady Mary Crawley exclaims.
Other plot details are under wraps, but the film takes place after the events of the first movie, which centered on the Crawley household preparing for a royal visit from King George V...

Fans of Downton Abbey, it’s time to celebrate. A second film of the popular PBS TV series is on the way and we have your first look at the brand new teaser.
The initial film followed a Royal Visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England and ended with a ball fitting for the Royal Family. In her review, Cate Marquis says Downton Abbey “is a pleasant, entertaining experience, one well worth the time. The return visit is nice for fans, and the movie was perfectly crafted for that purpose, but the film was enjoyable enough that it might draw a few new fans to the old series.”
Focus Features will release Downton Abbey: A New Era in theaters on March 18, 2022.

“Bridesmaids” writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are set to write a film centered on Cinderella’s evil stepsisters for Disney, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Wiig and Mumolo, who recently teamed on the comedy “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” will write the script for the still untitled, live-action film, though they’re not starring in the film, which is still in early development.
Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum for their Gloria Sanchez Productions will produce the untitled evil stepsisters movie.
The project will be a fairy tale musical that imagines “Cinderella” as told through the point of view of Cinderella’s two evil stepsisters. The film will span from their early childhood to beyond the events of Cinderella getting married to Prince Charming.
Disney turned “Cinderella” into a live-action remake in 2015 with the film starring Lily James and Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger...

Ah yes, we have a winner for the best ‘Comfort Food Movie’ of them all. When a trailer for this show popped up at a screening of The Farewell back in August, I heard gasps of excitement from the (slightly older-skewing) audience, as if everyone’s favorite relatives were coming back to town. Loyal fans of the massively popular TV series will be delighted: if you enjoyed it week by week or streaming, you’re going to love this ‘one more time’ get-together with the elegant Crawleys and their engaging domestic staff.

The Crawley family is set to take a tour through China.
Downton Abbey, the film centering on the aristocratic British family, has been scheduled for release in Chinese theaters on December 13.
The period drama continues the story of the Crawleys, and depicts a visit to their English country estate by the king and queen of England.
The film is directed by Michael Engler and written by Julian Fellowes, who also created and wrote the hit television series by the same name.
The series ran for six seasons on ITV and PBS. It became a huge success in China, with DVDs and internet showings with subtitles now required viewing. Audiences in the Communist country are particularly drawn to the depictions of the British upper class.
A report in the UK’s Daily Express noted that there’s a “voracious appetite for British culture” in China because it is seen as a symbol of wealth and success.

It hasn’t been that long since “Downton Abbey” went off the air, but a lot has happened since the British historical drama ended its six-season run in 2016.
With the Focus Features film sequel hitting theaters this weekend, now’s the time to brush up on where we left off with the Crawley family in the series finale.
In his review for TheWrap where he compared the “Downton” film to “The Avengers,” critic Dave White described the theatrical sequel — set in 1927, two years after the finale — as “a densely packed two-hour episode that manages to touch on the lives of every main character (and there are over two dozen of them) and weave together what would amount to a season’s worth of narratives.”

“Downton Abbey” was a television giant before the likes of “Game of Thrones” captured audiences. The Julian Fellowes-created period drama was the biggest international series at the time, bringing home so many awards and earning so much acclaim that Guinness World Records hailed it as the most critically acclaimed English-language television series of 2011. With its conclusion in 2015 after six seasons, the only return worthy of “Downton Abbey” would be in even bigger fashion: on the silver screen.
Director Michael Engler is no stranger to “Downton Abbey,” having directed several episodes, including the feature-length finale Christmas special. The series takes place in the titular Yorkshire castle, home of the noble Crawley family and their loyal servants downstairs. Over six seasons, the family was touched by historical events ranging from the sinking of the Titanic and World War I to the Spanish flu epidemic and Irish War for Independence. Coming on to the movie,...

Imperialist propaganda doesn’t get any more tender-hearted than “Downton Abbey.” The ITV series about extremely rich people in 1912 and their sweetly devoted staff of obedient servants always paid a certain amount of lip service to the inherent injustice of British aristocratic oligarchy, but not enough to make any of the moneyed characters retaliate, and certainly not enough to disrupt the show’s real reason to exist: coziness.
“The Crown,” for all its sumptuousness and elegance, will never make viewers truly love Britain’s royals, but this sweeping soap about compassionate lords and ladies and the underpaid staff they treat like family is the television equivalent of being tucked into a warm bed on a cold rainy night.

No need to kid ourselves: Downton Abbey is less an actual movie than a special episode of the very British TV series that Yanks devoured like crumpets for six seasons from 2011 to 2016. Still, it’s fun to see the old gang again. As soon as John Lunn’s Emmy-crowned theme kicks in, the film version, written by franchise creator Julian Fellowes and directed by series vet Michael Engler, plays like old home week — unless you’ve never seen a single episode, in which case the script might as well be written in Sanskrit.
