Exclusive: Peter Farrelly is looking to get back in to the genre that helped launch his career. Sources tell Deadline that the Oscar winner is partnering with Skydance on the new action comedy Balls Up that he will direct from a script by Deadpool scribes Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese.
Based on an original pitch from Wernick & Reese, the project was developed with Skydance. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producing along with Wernick & Reese and Andrew Muscato. Aimee Rivera will oversee the project for Skydance.
Plot details are unknown but sources say the tone will fit right in with those classic comedies like Dumb & Dumber and Kingpin that Farrelly directed with his brother Bobby that made the Farrellys two of the biggest names in comedy during the 1990s and 2000s. Peter Farrelly is currently in production on the Amazon pic Ricky Stanicky starring Zac Efron,...

“Green Book” director Peter Farrelly returns after his film won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2019 for a new adventure: “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” starring Zac Efron and Russell Crowe. Farrelly recently sat down with TheWrap in its Toronto International Film Festival Studio with Shutterstock to talk about the true story at the heart of his upcoming film.
“Somebody sent me a 12-minute documentary that Andrew Muscato did about the greatest beer run ever, and I just couldn’t believe what I was looking at, that this guy actually went to Vietnam during the war, somehow found his way around the country and dropped off beers with people and happened to get there right before the Tet Offensive. I was like, ‘That’s unbelievable,’” he told TheWrap’s Brian Welk after the movie’s world premiere on Sept. 13.

“The Greatest Beer Run Ever” tells the (based-on-a) true story of a man who went to Vietnam during the war just to bring beer to his enlisted friends. Director and co-writer Peter Farrelly started working on the film before his Oscar-winning drama “Green Book” finished its awards lap in 2019.

Exclusive: For the first time since launching eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Green Book five years ago, writer-director Peter Farrelly returns to the Toronto Film Festival with another drama built around an obscure and difficult to be believed but fact-based road trip set in the turbulent 1960s.
The Greatest Beer Run Ever is the story of Chickie Donohue (Zac Efron), a patriotic longshoreman from New York who in the late ’60s is a gung ho supporter of the Vietnam War effort, and who essentially embraces a suggestion by the bartender at their local watering hole (an unrecognizable Bill Murray) to travel by boat to the jungles of ‘Nam to track down soldiers from the neighborhood and bring them cans of beer and show the boys they haven’t been forgotten back home. This harebrained tour becomes a wakeup call to Donohue about the terrifying things that are really going on over there.

Set in 1967, Donohue leaves New York to track down his army friends in Vietnam and share a few beers with them to show that they have support from the American people. The first trailer for Peter Farrelly’s “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” proudly proclaims that the guy in the film played by Zac Efron “actually did this” as he sprints through an active war zone in Vietnam carrying a sack of cold brews and cheap American lagers.
“The Greatest Beer Run” ever is based on the true story of a man named Chickie Donohue, who felt burned by the protests at home over the Vietnam War and decided he wanted to show his support to his buddies and neighbors overseas by tracking each of them down in Vietnam and bringing them each a beer. And yes, you can tell he’s serious about that plan.
“The man’s stoned sober. That’s maybe his fifth beer, tops,” a bartender played by Bill Murray says in the trailer.

For his first film since winning the Oscar for 2018’s “Green Book,” Peter Farrelly again ventured into new regions of the country. The 40-day shoot of “The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” set between fall 1967 and spring 1968, was split between Thailand and northern New Jersey.
Thailand filled in for Vietnam; bars, churches and other locations in Newark, Paterson, Jersey City and North Bergen were convincing doubles for New York City of the era.
The entire film was to be shot in New Zealand until Covid-19 scuttled those plans. Farrelly heeded the advice of his friend, Sony Pictures Classics co-president Tom Bernard, who told him “if you’re going to shoot in New York, go to New Jersey. It’s cheaper and you got all the same stuff.”
On top of that, he was able to work in the home state of his producer Andrew Muscato, a documentarian making his narrative feature debut.

Bill Murray Rocks Cannes With Surprise Musical Performance At Premiere Of ‘New Worlds’ Concert Movie
With Cannes winding down tonight—just one last movie in the festival’s official selection, by Gaspar Noe, was left to play—Bill Murray took to the stage at the Debussy theater with cellist Jan Vogler, pianist Vanessa Perez and violinist Mira Wang for a 25-minute concert of music following the premiere of Andrew Muscato’s doc New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization.
The film captures Murray, Vogler and friends’ concert in June 2018 at the Acropolis in Greece, in which the ensemble blended classical music, jazz, poetry and literature for an eclectic evening of art, at the culmination of their European tour. It was trumped as “a program that showcases the core of the American values in literature and music,” and featured monologues, singing, and plenty of comedy from Murray as the talented trio of musicians backed him up. Bill Murray is among the cast of Wes Anderson’s new film that will begin production in Spain in August, Variety has learned.
Sources close to the project have confirmed Murray’s casting. The actor has appeared in nine of Anderson’s movies to date, excluding the new pic.
The as-yet-untitled film also stars Tilda Swinton, as she revealed exclusively to Variety in June. Though the film is shooting in Spain, “it’s not about Spain,” Swinton had hinted. Meanwhile Anderson had said he’s “not ready to share any details” about the new film.
Murray and Swinton co-star in Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” which recently had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Murray is an old Anderson hand. Besides the Spain project and “The French Dispatch,” the duo have also worked together on “Isle of Dogs,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “The Darjeeling Limited,...

"Whoever you are... come travel with me!" Time to rock the Acropolis! An official promo trailer has debuted for a fascinating film titled New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization, which is premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival kicking off next week. It's a filmed presentation of one remarkable performance. On a glorious Greek evening, screen legend Bill Murray and world-renowned cellist Jan Vogler perform the Acropolis with a timeless mix of music and poetry. Captured on film by director Andrew Muscato, Murray & Vogler are joined by the dazzling Mira Wang (on violin) and dynamic Vanessa Perez (on piano). Spanning from Bach to Van Morrison, Whitman to West Side Story, the wildly entertaining, humorous and deeply touching show is infused with the one-of-a-kind charm of Bill Murray. This sounds and looks great! I wish I could've been there for the actual performance, but I'm glad they captured this on film so we can all enjoy it.

The trailer opens with Murray reading Whitman’s poem “Song of the Open Road, 9” before launching into “I Feel Pretty” from “West Side Story,” all behind a sweeping classical music trio led by world-renowned cellist Vogler and featuring Mira Wang on violin and Vanessa Perez on piano.

Following up his love-it-or-hate-it Climax, director Gaspar Noé secretly shot a new film this past spring and it’s among the additions to the Cannes Film Festival lineup, which also includes new work by Ari Folman, a Bill Murray concert film, Noémie Merlant’s directorial debut, and more.
As for the Enter the Void director’s latest, he shot Vortex over twenty days between mid-March and April 2021, with a cast including Dario Argento, Françoise Lebrun, and Alex Lutz, as well as a budget of 3.3 million euros, more than his last two features. Check out a roughly-translated synopsis below via his Le Temps de Trout Tout:
Gaspar Noé, son of the Argentinian painter Luis Felipe Noé, finished his film at the last minute because he shot it quickly and late. A quasi-documentary film about the last days of a loving old couple suffering from senility, played by Françoise Lebrun and Dario Argento.

Zac Efron and Russell Crowe are currently in negotiations to star in ‘Green Book’ filmmaker Peter Farrelly’s ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’ at Apple Studios.
The casting bods on the project are also eyeing Bill Murray for a supporting role.
The film tells the story of Chick Donahue, who left New York in 1967 to bring beer to his childhood buddies in the Army — while they are fighting in Vietnam. Donohue took a good idea to the extreme, hitching a ride on a Merchant Marine ship, then carrying the beer through the jungle as he tried to track down his three friends. Dressed in shorts and Hawaiian shirts, he was mistaken for CIA, which made his effort a bit easier.
Efron would take on the lead role of Donahue.

Exclusive: Director Peter Farrelly finally is ready to follow his Best Picture Oscar winner Green Book. Apple Studios is in talks to finance The Greatest Beer Run Ever, with Zac Efron and Russell Crowe in talks to star and Bill Murray is being courted for a supporting role.
Since that victorious Oscar Night, Farrelly has had his sights set on this film, which he developed with Skydance. The film will produced by Andrew Muscato and Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger. I’m hearing that they are tying down the details but that the film will be made as an Apple Original Films title.

"All he really cares about is access to power." Giant Interactive has revealed the trailer for a documentary titled Mooch, about the infamous White House Communications Director named Anthony "The Mooch" Scaramucci. Made by doc filmmaker Andrew J. Muscato, he was already working on this well before he ended up getting the White House job. "Anthony, I always thought was an interesting kind of creature of Wall Street, who I thought, through a film, I could kind of introduce to the world. But recently he kind of pre-empted me and introduced himself," Muscato explains. The rest is history. And he was there to capture it all. Mooch is being released very quickly straight to VOD later this month, if anyone wants to watch. And this isn't a puff piece - it thoroughly criticizes him. Here's the first trailer for Andrew J. Muscato's documentary Mooch, direct from Vimeo (via Deadline):...

Anthony Scaramucci is moving from television to the big screen with a new documentary, “Mooch.”
Directed by Andrew J. Muscato, the documentary follows the former White House official’s rise inside the Trump administration, using news footage and interviews with both colleagues of Scaramucci and the political personality himself.
The first trailer, which dropped Thursday, opens with a flurry of news clips to introduce the fiery news persona that Scaramucci has cultivated over the past couple of years. During a scathing interview with the New Yorker last year, Scaramucci took aim at former White House official Steve Bannon, saying “I’m not Steve Bannon, I’m not trying to suck my own c–k.” The statement, along with others made on Twitter, all cultivated in the loss of Scaramucci’s job as White House communications director just ten days after he began, but that doesn’t stop Muscato from highlighting...
