All films are essentially an act of interpretation. It’s a question of whether or not we decide to depict our strangest dreams and desires or to translate something that already exists in the real world. At the sixth edition of the Bolton Film Festival, running physically from 5th to 9th October with its online element taking place between the 12th and 23rd October, the programmers curate a strong, internationally-minded collection of shorts that straddle the line between the harshness of the kitchen sink and the pure possibilities of fantastical imagination — sometimes even within the same film! Featuring homegrown talent, Ukrainian entries, German sci-fi, American cowboys and Scandinavian absurdism, we are treated to the world as it is and the world at its most cartoonish and exaggerated. Straddling animation, documentary and traditional fiction, this programme was an absolute pleasure to dive into. Ahead of the festival’s opening tomorrow, here...

Being the cinematographer who’s had a heavy hand in cinema’s most distinct visual palette of the last 20 years, Robert Yeoman — better-known as Wes Anderson’s regular Dp — need not have some new film for us to speak with him. He’s serving on the jury at this year’s Camerimage International Film Festival, so while yours truly is still stationed in Bydgoszcz, Poland, a discussion was quickly arranged.
What follows is a mix of career overview and in-the-moment pondering, and in between these two is an explication of Yeoman’s many thoughts on visual expression — a matter perhaps best emphasized by how the nonchalant notice that he’d recently been in Prospect Park to shoot a commercial for the New York Lottery started a five-minute talk regarding that specific form. For that, as well as a closer look at the mind which has helped bring forth many of...

The 68th annual Directors Guild of America Awards have just concluded with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu winning the guild’s top prize for his brilliant work on The Revenant, officially making him the new frontrunner for the Best Director Oscar (the winner here goes on to win the Oscar about 90% of the time).
This is quite a welcome and monumental event, as it makes Inarritu the first director ever to win the DGA’s Feature Film award twice in a row. However, what’s more pressing is what this means in the context of the awards race. As I noted earlier, in the instances where the PGA, DGA, and SAG have split their top awards, and the DGA winner is popular enough to go on to win the corresponding Oscar, their film has also gone on to win Best Picture. Not only would this make Inarritu the first director to win...

Jean-Claude Van Damme does the splits, Mike Tyson lends an ear and 10 years of The X Factor in 60 seconds
Doing the splits is the theme of this week's viral video chart and we can guarantee that opinion will be divided on the first two clips. Jean-Claude Van Damme, the Belgian martial artist, actor, and director, performs an epic stunt when he does the splits between two reversing lorries.
The stunt, filmed to demonstrate the precision and directional stability of Volvo Dynamic Steering was filmed on a Spanish airstrip at sunrise. Directed by Andreas Nilsson and with a haunting soundtrack called Only Time by Enya, it was filmed in one take.
Such a dramatic advert is, of course, wide open to parody and so our second clip features Channing Tatum, who halts filming on his latest film, 22 Jump Street, to film Jenko's epic split. Cue tension as tea trollies replace the...

Jean-Claude Van Damme was born in 1960. He is older than the current president of the United States, the Super Bowl and the nation of Fiji. And yet the Belgian action hero is still capable of physical feats that would cower a man half his age, as evidenced by his star turn in a remarkable Volvo advertisement released Wednesday. In the ad, titled "The Epic Split," the Street Fighter star is shown straddling the mirrors of two trucks driving parallel down a closed highway. As Van Damme delivers a voiceover describing a "body crafted to perfection," the trucks slowly drift apart,...

Watch Jean-Claude Van Damme -- the Belgian actor and director best known for his many martial arts/action films including Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Universal Soldier, Hard Target & Timecop -- carry out his famous split between two reversing trucks. Never done before, Jcvd says it's the most epic of splits. This live test was set up to demonstrate the precision and directional stability of Volvo Dynamic Steering -- a world first technology that makes the new Volvo FM easier to drive. Are artful ads the new mini-cinema to entertain us in a new era of bite-sized digestibles? Has it always been this way? Is this the best commercial you’ll see on the Internet all day? We thought that "Gravity"/Ikea thing was funny, but this Volvo Trucks ad starring action star Jean-Claude Van Damme is amazing, hilarious, beautiful and kind of insane. It’s pretty astonishing actually, and we wonder how much CGI was used, if any. Volvo writes, “This live test was set up to demonstrate the precision and directional stability of Volvo Dynamic Steering -- a world first technology that makes the new Volvo FM easier to drive. “ Let’s hope there’s no Volvo-gate that transpires. Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of it? The use of Enya’s “ Only Time.” Directed by Andreas Nilsson, apparently the spot was shot in Spain on a closed-off landing field at...

Today's featured clip is not only dripping with slime, blood and various other unidentified gloopy substances, but it's also a rather heartbreaking little film, thanks to the melancholy strains of Brooklyn art-rock unit Yeasayer and a touching (and pretty brave) performance by Kristen Bell (Scream 4). Directed by Andreas Nilsson, “Madder Red” is the story of a woman and her pet monster, a baby-sized mutant which is basically a fleshy mass of limbs, eyes and oozing orifices... and it's dying. Bell totally sells the scenario – the unsettling creature effects help too, of course – and you'll actually feel heartbroken for her character (well, at least I did). Yeasayer - "Madder Red" (Official Video) “Madder Red” comes from Yeasayer's acclaimed 2010 album Odd Blood. The band's latest, Fragrant World, was released last fall. Hear, see and learn more at their official site.

In case you missed it, we resurrected our old Videodrome column a few weeks back: our semi-regular showcase for the best music videos around. Since the form has given the world game-changing helmers in both the blockbuster and arthouse worlds, it's always important to keep an eye on promos, and indeed, one could argue that there's more invention to be found in the short-form than there is in features. So, with no further ado, the five best music videos we've seen in the last few weeks. As ever, any tips and suggestions are more than welcome.

It’s lucky 13 for the Boston Underground Film Festival as they celebrate their raucous 13th annual edition this year. Opening with the much buzzed about bloody feature film Hobo With a Shotgun starring Rutger Hauer and directed by Jason Eisener, the fest then barrels on for eight wild nights and days from March 24-31.
While there’s plenty of underground goodness from the U.S.A., this year Buff feels like it’s a much more international affair with several sick features from around the globe. There’s gory horror and quirky black comedy from Japan in the guise of Yoshihiro Nishimura’s Helldriver and Sion Sono’s Cold Fish; the Argentinian freak-out Phase7 by Nicolas Goldbart; David Blyth’s Wound is a psychological thriller from New Zealand; and Mark Hartley’s Machete Maidens Unleashed! is a look at Philippine exploitation cinema from the ’70s.

In primary school in Manchester, Bernard Sumner was told by his teacher that he was wasting his time reading a book of poetry -- that he would only end up working in a factory. Instead, he became a founding member of Joy Division, and then emerged as the frontman of New Order after the death of Ian Curtis.
In this collaboration with members of Hot Chip and Hot City, Sumner emerges in Chucks shadowed by a shadowy copy-cat to sing, "Didn't Know What Love Was." Directed by Andreas Nilsson (Mgmt "Flash Delirium," Yeasayer "Madder Red"), the video is his first for the increasingly visible Converse music campaign. "A project that celebrates and supports the greatest art form since pyramid building - music," Nilsson states proudly.
The Swedish director added, "Working with Bernard Sumner of Joy Division and New Order was like hanging out with my own personal history and Hot Chip...

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.

Remember when you were a kid and MTV would show a new video with that cool “World Premiere” intro? Well, this is sorta like the Internet version. This cover of Nick Cave and Anita Lane’s 1986 song about hotel sex with strangers (at least that’s what I think it’s about) will appear on a three-disc deluxe edition of Fever Ray’s eponymous debut, out November 24 on Mute. If three discs sounds a bit much for a band just starting out, consider that Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Andersson is still probably best known as one half of Sweden’s The Knife, which put out Pitchfork’s favorite album of 2006. She’s known for her ghoulish stage antics—goblin masks, face paint, fake blood—as much as she is for her erotic and macabre music. So it should come as no surprise that Fever Ray’s music videos are spooky as hell,...
