With the streaming bubble bursting and entertainment companies retooling their vision for the future of television, it seems like every new day yields a polarizing series cancellation. From viewership stats to marketing pitfalls and budgetary concerns, TV series are seeing the plug pulled at a seemingly faster rate than ever before — in some cases, after production has been completed and even before they’ve had a chance to air.
For example, after outcry over recently canned series like “1899,” “First Kill” and “Warrior Nun,” Netflix’s new co-ceos Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said they have never canceled a “successful show.” Platforms like AMC, Starz, Showtime and HBO Max have pulled shows despite having the majority of filming finished or nearly done so. And for Hulu, journalists and audiences raised disappointment following the cancellation of “Reboot.”
At the same time, some shows across networks and streamers are coming to a close; conversely,...

HBO’s “100 Foot Wave” offers few visual clues the world outside of the compelling docuseries was in the grips of a 100-year pandemic that will kill millions of people.
The show’s hero and protagonist, Garrett McNamara, was not filmed wearing a mask despite the close quarters of many scenes that are featured in Season 2’s first and second episodes. And he was by no means alone.
But Covid-restricted plane rides to Portugal were soon required as rare early season conditions at Nazaré prompted a reunion of the world’s best big-wave surfers. They included McNamara, Ian Cosenza, Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca and Kai Lenny.
“We saw this big swell on the map,” McNamara said from his house in O’ahu, Hawaii. “It was the best-looking swell that I’ve seen, with the best conditions. And it looked like it was going to be the best waves we’ve ever seen.

At twenty-six years of age, Brazilian Maya Gabeira was at the top of her sport. A world champion. Winner of countless awards. On covers of magazines. And repped by Red Bull. Looking to progress her career from becoming a pioneer for women in the big wave surfing game to holding a World Record that stood next to the men in control of the sport, she and mentor Carlos Burle traveled to Nazaré, Portugal to accomplish the unthinkable. Everything came apart instead. Not only did she wipe out and almost die after two failed attempts at recovery left her unconscious and floating in the water, but Maya was ruthlessly dismissed by everyone in the industry as inexperienced, reckless, and a destructive force for surfing itself. She was all but abandoned.

In getting some of the water shots for “100 Foot Wave,” producer Joe Lewis understands that it was risky for the camera people to attempt. “The people who are shooting from the water are in every bit the same amount of danger as the surfers. They’re truly taking the same risks,” he tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). He give assurance that it was really only the jet ski cameras that went out into the waves and that most other footage was captured through either land cameras or drones. “The number one concern is just making sure that we stay out of the surfer’s way don’t cause any problems. The second is just how do we get the best images, but we take a lot of care and do it all really safely.”

Allegedly, the two hacked into the exchange and stole around $120,000 Bitcoin. As the value of the stolen cryptocurrency rose from from $71 million to nearly $5 billion, the two allegedly tried to launder the assets by creating fake identities and online accounts to buy physical gold and NFTs. A press release from Netflix describes Lichtenstein and Morgan’s case as “the biggest financial crime case in history.”

Two decades after his breakthrough as a documentary filmmaker, Chris Smith is on a tear in the non-fiction realm, having directed “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” “Fyre,” and “Operation Variety Blues: The College Admissions Scandal” in the past four years, while also serving as an executive producer of last year’s pandemic docuseries sensation “Tiger King.” His latest effort, HBO’s “100 Foot Wave,” follows surfing pioneer Garrett McNamara on his quest to conquer a mighty swell in Portugal; another project revolving around Robert Downey Jr. and his late father is in the works.
Last August, the younger Downey called Smith “arguably the greatest documentary (filmmaker) around right now” while speaking on the “Smartless” podcast, praise that especially resonated given his father’s work as documentary filmmaker.
Smith’s recent output reflects a renewed focus on documentary filmmaking after years of mostly concentrating on commercial directing to the point of burnout.

Surfing legend Garrett McNamara has broken many bones riding some of the world’s biggest waves.
“Broke my feet many times, broke my ribs many times,” he notes. “I’ve broke my back, broke my shoulder.”
Those injuries have not deterred him from going back into the ocean and seeking to do what might seem impossible, or at least inadvisable: surfing a 100-foot-tall wave.
His quest to accomplish that feat unfolds in the six-part HBO Sports documentary 100 Foot Wave, coming this spring to HBO and to streaming platform HBO Max. Chris Smith directed, aiming “to try to tell the story from land and sea.”

Do a 100-foot waves exist? If so, what does such a leviathan look like? And can a human even ride one?
Directed and executive produced by Chris Smith and executive produced by Emmy winner Joe Lewis, the six-part HBO Sports Documentary series 100 Foot Wave plumbs the depths of those questions through the quest of one man. The series intimately follows the decade-long odyssey of big-wave pioneer Garrett McNamara who, after visiting a small fishing village in Portugal, helped push the sport beyond the realm of imagination.
For decades, the biggest wave ever ridden was agreed to have been a legendary 35-foot monster ridden by Greg Noll in 1969 on the West Side of Oahu. Surfers rehashed Noll’s ride, arguing whether a wave could even reach that height without toppling over and, if so, if a human could actually ride it.
As surfers explored the planet, they eventually discovered a very few rare spots — in California,...

Ever wonder what a professional big wave surfer thinks about moments after they wipe out on a 50-something-foot wave, shatter their arm into nine pieces, then get pummeled by thousands of tons of frigid water and violently flung deep into the churning, darkness 40 feet below the ocean's surface? "I should have done more yoga," recalls Garrett McNamara when asked about what was going through his battered head after his spectacular pummeling on Jan. 7 at Mavericks, a surf break in Northern California. On April 23, McNamara and several dozen of the world's best big wave riders - including Bethany Hamilton - will...

It doesn't seem like a lot of people are happy with this Point Break remake. So far the movie stars Gerard Butler as Bodhi, Luke Bracey as Johnny Utah, and Ray Winstone in the role of Utah’s partner originally played by Gary Busey. The movie is being directed by Ericson Core (Invincible) from a script written by Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Total Recall).
Thanks to producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove, we have some additional information on the film and what they are planning for it. Speaking to Collider, Johnson said that they've started shooting aspects of the film:
We’ve actually been in photography on the film, beginning our stunt work with our real athletes. This is a movie with a lot of stunts and no stunt people in it because the stunts are way too dangerous for people who are stunt people.

Washington, April 8: Gerard Butler has been banned from performing heavy duty stunts in his upcoming remake of 1991 film 'Point Break', it has been revealed.
Guinness World Record holder Garrett McNamara, who has surfed the largest wave ever, and Jeb Corliss, who famously leapt off the Eiffel Tower, have been brought on board to perform the 44-year-old actor's stunts, the Daily Star reported.
But it seems like the producers want to elevate the thrill, and are going to bring in sports professionals as doubles for the film, which involves sky diving and surf riding exploits, considered risky even for professional stunt.

London, Oct 31: A Brazilian surfer has reportedly broken a Guinness World Record by riding what may have been the biggest wave of all time at 100ft off the coast of Portugal.
Carlos Burle is believed to have beaten the world record set by Garrett McNamara from Hawaii, which was 78 feet in 2011, the Mirror reported.
After conquering the ride, Burle told Surfer Today that it was pure luck and he never know when he will be able to catch the wave.
Burle added that before his stunt, he was nervous as he hadn't surfed any wave and everyone had already had their rides, including Maya Gabeira, who almost drowned when she was.

London, May 11: Thrill-seeker Garrett McNamara has set the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed by riding a 78-foot tall break off the coast of Portugal in November.
Confirmed by a panel of experts at the annual Billabong Xxl Global Big Wave Awards, the 44-year-old beat the previous mark held since 2008 by surfing legend Mike Parson by just one foot.
Barrelling down the enormous wave at Nazare, McNamara risked being drowned or crushed by the enormous wall of water he was riding to take the coveted crown.

Walking on Water may be the living embodiment of the old maxim ‘no risk, no reward.’ Though a documentary about surfing (with strong Christian overtones) would seem like a pretty easy target to hit, Walking fails to engage simply because it so clearly doesn’t want to possibly be seen as anything else than what its filmmakers set out to make, being one that affirms Christian faith and values. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if the directors were ever in doubt as to what the film would be about, or open to new experiences themselves in this journey, that process is in no way evident in the final product. This would be less of a liability if they were teaching a master class in theology, but they have instead produced a travelogue with startlingly little sense of adventure.
