Other than the actual fundraising, one of the enjoyable things about “at home” music events in this time of coronavirus is watching artists perform unvarnished.
This was largely true of Bet’s “Saving Ourselves” event (dubbed S.O.S.) on Wednesday (April 22). Although most of the videos were pre-recorded using backing tracks, the home-spun feel of the broadcast and warm-hearted sentiments made for an entertaining and poignant couple of hours that raised funds for communities of color — disproportionately affected by Covid-19.
Emceed by four different hosts — Anthony Anderson, Kelly Rowland, Terrence J and Regina Hall — all presenting from their homes, the absence of any stage direction or time restrictions that typically accompany formal televised events added a loose informality to the occasion.
The benefit kicked off with an uplifting gospel-infused song, “I Smile,” performed by the ageless Kirk Franklin and featuring Kelly Price, Fantasia, Tyrese and others.

Exclusive: We’ll be seeing a slew of music industry icons and visionaries portrayed in the upcoming second season of American Soul, the Don Cornelius-infused period drama, set for premiere on Bet in 2020.
American Soul takes an unflinching look at the entrepreneur, his Soul Train dancers, crew and musicians in an unforgiving Hollywood in the 1970’s – how they work, play, rise and fall against the backdrop of Soul Train — “the hippest trip in America” and one of the most predominant television shows for African American culture.
Inspired by the personal trials and professional successes of a young, ambitious and troubled impressario Cornelius, season two of the period drama picks up two years later in 1975. As Don, played by Sinqua Walls, becomes a rising star, he continues to manage an assortment of spectacular talent that comes to his show, a shaky family life, personal health and perhaps most importantly, his own ego.

The moment Kelly Price walked into the Boston Pd on Absentia Season 1 Episode 2, something seemed off.
She came off as someone far too confident, and too cold, to be a random witness who just happened to have spied Emily Byrne arguing with Robert Semarov two weeks ago.
Her demeanor was the biggest clue that her story wasn’t real.
But Detective Gibbs and members of the FBI were ready to suspect that Emily had been behind her own abduction, and Semarov’s murder.
At first I wondered if it was because it was easier to blame Emily than to accept that they gave up on finding her too soon. That they had let one of their own down so spectacularly.
Adam and Detective Gibbs came down pretty hard on Emily when they questioned her. Maybe they thought she’d break if they rattled her enough, but this woman has been through hell and back.
