Last we reported on the future of What We Do in the Shadows, director Taika Waititi revealed that all involved in the hit 2014 horror comedy were game for a sequel, however, it appears that future will now make room for a spinoff TV series.
Word comes by way of Radio New Zealand (via /Film), revealing that New Zealand On Air has pledged support to the offshoot to the tune of $1.4 million, mapping out plans for six 30-minute episodes. They’ll premiere Down Under via New Zealand channel, Tvnz 2, though there is currently no mention of when the series will air overseas. We’ll notify you if and when that changes. Known officially as Paranormal Event Response Unit, the Shadows spinoff is said to take place in Wellington, following the paranormal heroics of Mike and Karen as they protect people “from supernatural phenomena in their own police reality series.”

Before Thor: Ragnarok and Hunt for the Wilderpeople came What We Do in the Shadows, Taika Waititi’s long-in-development passion project that went on to become something of a breakout hit for the New Zealand filmmaker.
Stylized as a vampire mockumentary, Waititi’s feature drew praise for its smart writing and eclectic cast of blood-suckers, and ever since gracing screens early last year, there have been mooted talk of a sequel.
Rather than keep the focus on Viago (Waititi) or Jemaine Clement’s Vladislav, the writer-director has revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the potential follow-up would shift gears to tell the tale from the perspective of the werewolves. For now, though, Waititi cautioned that the creative team are still very much in the pre-production phase.
We want to do it, and we’re coming up with story ideas. The first film took us about seven years to make, and we...

With the release of "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" in U.S. cinemas this week, New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi has been out doing promotional rounds and talking up his next project, Marvel Studios' "Thor: Ragnarok".
One question that does come up though is what he intends to do after 'Thor', with many suspecting a follow-up to his acclaimed vampire mockumentary "What We Do in the Shadows". Waititi has previously discussed plans for a werewolf-centric sequel titled "We're Wolves" and today, while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the outlet asked him about his plans for the film which he'll co-write with Jemaine Clement.
"We want to do it, and we're coming up with story ideas. The first film took us about seven years to make, and we don't want to do that again. It's a lot easier now that we have all the characters, and we know how we want to do it,...

Love it or hate it Twilight did a lot of damage for the vampire in pop culture. When the movies were finally over and done with and we were free of the scourge of the sparkly ones, the bloodsuckers stayed somewhat in the shadows, though recently making a comeback with good movies like Only Lovers Left Alive. With that spark of life given to the undead fiends, what they now need is a good injection of the red stuff to truly bring them back to glory. We may just have that in the form of What We Do in the Shadows.

What We Do in the Shadows
Written & Directed by Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi
New Zealand | USA, 2014
What We Do in the Shadows is a new vampire mockumentary that brilliantly straddles the line between accessibility and quirkiness. The pitch-perfect black humor is tempered by a surprising level of tenderness, as well as some sharp observations about the stylized nature of “reality” television. It’s easily the funniest movie of 2015, and seems destined to join the ranks of other classic mockers like This Is Spinal Tap and Best in Show.
Armed with crucifixes and heavy-duty insurance clauses, a documentary film crew descends upon the flat of 4 vampires as they prepare for “The Unholy Masquerade;” a massive gathering of New Zealand’s undead community. These aren’t sanitized, sparkly vampires, either. These are hardcore bloodsuckers that prowl the streets for fresh victims every night. Each vampire is vividly captured with a heady mixture...

Friends Forever: Clement & Waititi’s Pleasantly Charming Vampiric Mock-Doc
That immortal cinematic archetype, the vampire, has once again been commandeered into the periphery of independent cinema, at least indicated by recent examples of decidedly offbeat fare from the likes of Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, and now from New Zealand, co-directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, who have made the next logical step with a vampire comedy as faux documentary with What We Do in the Shadows. After premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, the title has gone on to tour fests, including SXSW and Toronto (where it won the audience award in the Midnight Madness section), and received generally enthusiastic reception. But after securing a distribution deal, the filmmakers provocatively went to Kickstarter to establish a wider release platform beyond New York and Los Angeles, which means the independent title will now see its limited release extend to seventy plus cities.

In Digital Spy's exclusive clip above, the trio focus on fashion as they prepare for a night out.
Stuart Rutherford, Ben Fransham and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer feature in the supporting cast for the film, which opens in UK cinemas on November 21 and February 23, 2015 in the Us.

Day three of Mayhem hosted a sold out screening of New Zealand vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows. This was clearly the most popular film of the festival, confirming there’s a fair amount of interest generated from the reviews at previous screenings.
I will admit to not being overly familiar with Flight of the Conchords. What We Do in the Shadows wasn’t just the funniest film I watched at Sundance this year, it was the funniest movie I’ve seen in years! The mockumentary, written and directed by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle vs Shark, Boy), does for vampires what This Is Spinal Tap did for rock bands. The first six minutes of this fake vampire documentary have been released for your viewing pleasure. This and the trailer that was previously released barely scratch the surface of the laughs in this uproarious comedy that follows a group of centuries and millennia old vampires who are trying to adapt to live in the modern world. The pace ramps up later in the film, and the gags just get better and better. I’m very pleased that they are keeping those best bits tucked away for now. If you want some...
