Andy Serkis has big expectations for 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'.The 58-year-old star played ape leader Caesar in the three previous movies, but will not appear in the latest flick in the rebooted franchise after the character's death in the 2017 film 'War for the Planet of the Apes', and has high praise for Wes Ball's film.Speaking to CinemaBlend, Andy said: "I think Wes Ball is going to do an amazing job with this film. I think it's, from what I've heard and what I've seen, there's some amazing conceptual artwork."And where they've chosen to land the story and take off with the next iteration, I think it's gonna blow people's minds."'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' is slated for release in May 2024 and will star Owen Teague in the lead role of Cornelius, the son of Caesar.Meanwhile, Andy recently revealed that...

“Luther” sequel film “The Fallen Sun” opens like many of the episodes from the Idris Elba detective drama: with someone getting murdered. In the film’s case, the victim is Callum Aldrich (James Bamford), who is kidnapped and killed by wealthy serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). But in the film’s first draft, Callum was a woman before creator Neil Cross made a rewrite — at the request of Netflix.
Cross revealed the change in a recent interview with The Independent. The writer, who created the original series and penned every episode in addition to “Fallen Sun’s” screenplay, said that the first victim was female in the original script in part because he believes violence against women is more “frightening” for viewers.
“For reasons I fear to interrogate too deeply, the female victims resonate and scare more deeply,” Cross told The Independent. “So, there was a defiant part of...

Fans of Luther have complained about an apparent plot hole in the new Netflix movie Luther: The Fallen Sun.
Released on the streaming service last week, The Fallen Sun follows on from the hit BBC series, and sees Idris Elba return as the maverick detective John Luther.
Spoilers follow for Luther: The Fallen Sun – you have been warned!
At the end of Luther’s fifth series, Elba’s character is arrested after failing to save his ex-lover-turned-nemesis Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).
Fallen Sun begins with Luther behind bars. While it is not revealed exactly why he is imprisoned, he was previously suspected of the murders of Alice, DS Halliday, Benny Silver (Michael Smiley), and Mr Palmer, an assassin.
As viewers know, he was in fact innocent of all the murders, despite a propensity for breaking the rules. However, it seems like he was convicted on at least one of the counts.

Luther fans finally saw Idris Elba's character return in the Luther: Fallen Sun movie on Netflix, but a small continuity change was made to the title character's storyline.
Starring Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, and Dermot Crowley, the Luther: Fallen Sun movie follows Dci John Luther (Elba) after his release from prison as he hunts down a serial killer in London.
At the end of the Luther TV show, Luther was arrested for various crimes but primarily for being framed for the death of Mr. Palmer, an assassin he had shot but not killed. In the film, however, we are led to believe he was incarcerated because villain David Robey (Serkis) has released incriminating evidence surrounding Luther's illegal misdeeds.

No one would ever accuse the BBC detective series "Luther" of being fluffy and light-hearted, but the film, "Luther: The Fallen Sun," is exceptionally bleak. The film, which sees detective John Luther (Idris Elba) try to capture a vicious serial killer named David Robey (Andy Serkis), is somehow even darker than the television series. In fact, there's even a real-life horror story wrapped into the film through a scene that takes place in front of the Anatomical Crucifixion, an ancient and rather disturbing work of art hanging in London's Royal Academy of the Arts. In a scene near the beginning of the film, Robey visits the Anatomical Crucifixion and sort of stares at it while he discusses his plans (via voiceover) for John Luther. Like the depiction of a flayed man before him, Robey wants Luther metaphorically crucified and laid bare, his layers peeled away for everyone to see.

In his stunning three-episode arc as factory prison foreman Kino Loy in last year's "Andor," Andy Serkis presented a character that audiences were fiercely rooting for. In crime thriller "Luther: The Fallen Sun," the actor cuts right to the other end of the spectrum as sadistic serial killer David Robey. Sporting a coiffed blond 'do and armed with a tech empire and a dangerous amount of wealth, Robey's particular M.O. might prompt you to stick a bit of electrical tape over your laptop camera.
With an insatiable hunger for people's most shameful secrets, Robey has an army of hackers spying on the computers, phones, smart speakers, and other devices of random unsuspecting people all over the world. He's "harvesting shame from the ether," as writer Neil Cross puts it. And with a simple threat to release this blackmail material to the world, he can puppeteer victims right into his...

Picking up where Series 5 of the TV show left off, Luther: The Fallen Sun sees Idris Elba’s brilliant but disgraced copper breaking out of the slammer to hunt down serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). A twisted tech genius with dodgy hair and an even dodgier fashion sense, Robey is luring his victims by hijacking their digital footprints and using their deepest, darkest secrets – or as he calls it, their “shame” – against them.
Robey is one of the franchise’s creepiest and most sadistic baddies. Not only is he able to properly go toe-to-toe with Luther both physically and mentally, but his vast resources allow him to carry out his crimes on a much grander scale than we’re used to seeing – think a very, very messed-up Bond villain.

Fans of Idris Elba's thrilling crime drama "Luther" will always have the same question going into every new installment: will Alice Morgan return? The iconic narcissistic and psychopathic murderer (played by Ruth Wilson) comes in and out of Luther's life in a havoc-wreaking game of cat and mouse throughout the show's five seasons. Although the murderous genius constantly challenges Luther's altruistic worldview with her nihilistic one, the detective can't deny his underlying feelings for her.
Alice seemingly fell to her death in season five, but her body disappeared, leaving fans to wonder if she's actually dead and whether or not she would appear in future installments of "Luther." Well, "Luther: The Fallen Sun" premiered on Netflix on March 10, answering whether our favorite detective's antagonist lover would return from the dead once again. Here's the deal.

What would "Luther" be without London? More specifically, what would the series be without its dark interpretation of the English Capital? Over five seasons of "Luther," creator and writer Neil Cross has maintained a commitment to delving under the carapace of the city, eschewing standard shots of recognizable landmarks in favor of unearthing a grimy underbelly. Of course, that's all mirrored in the character of Luther himself. Since the show debuted in 2011, Idris Elba's tortured detective has endured all manner of harrowing experience, witnessing friends and family die and coming to represent a human manifestation of the very urban decay that surrounds him. And what better place for a brilliant yet haunted detective to operate than in a great yet eroding city?

Over five seasons, Idris Elba's John Luther has encountered some of the worst monsters that London had to offer. From a chilling slasher who hides behind a Mr. Punch mask, to a killer who chooses his victims at random on the roll of a die, to a cannibal with Cotard's syndrome, the former Dci has seen the darkest sides of humanity.
Emphasis on "former," because "Luther: The Fallen Sun" finds its protagonist disgraced and behind bars. This is where fans of the show left him at the end of season 5, following a complex series of events, but the film provides its own explanation for Luther's incarceration so that newcomers can jump right in. Luther breaks out of his forced retirement after receiving a taunt from a serial killer whose case he'd been investigating. David Robey (Andy Serkis) specializes in psychological torment, using blackmail to puppeteer his victims in the lead-up to their deaths.

One evening in 2008, Neil Cross posed perhaps the most important question he’s ever asked. The TV writer and novelist, on the phone to a BBC producer, was being praised for a treatment he’d put together for a new London-set series about a volatile trench coat-wearing detective. But there was a problem: the lead character’s name had to change – and an alternative was needed immediately.
“At this point, it was just a show in development,” Cross recalls. “I shouted to my wife in the kitchen: ‘What’s the best name: Luther or Solomon?’ and she went: ‘Luther!’ So I said into the phone, ‘He’s called Luther.’”
Fifteen years and five series later, the first of which was released in 2010, it’s impossible to imagine Idris Elba striding around London, announcing his arrival at crime scenes with a flash of his badge and a gruff: “Solomon.” Elba is...

This post contains spoilers for "No Time To Die."
As we all prepare to move into the post-Daniel Craig era of Bond movies, Idris Elba is a name that just doesn't seem to go away. For years, the now 50-year-old actor has been tipped as one of the most likely to take over the mantle of 007, even though in 2021 Elba admitted he's probably not going to be the next Bond. And with Craig's version firmly buried beneath a hail of ballistics in the finale of "No Time To Die," the rumor mill has once again started churning, even as Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson remain tight-lipped on who will be the next James Bond.
In the meantime, Elba has returned to one of his best roles with the new Netflix movie "Luther: The Fallen Sun." In what looks like a fittingly bombastic outing, considering the TV...

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.
And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

Luther: The Fallen Sun is an action movie directed by Jamie Payne starring Idris Elba. With Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley.
Idris Elba is the main attraction in this thriller that mixes James Bond with serial killers and gruesome crimes: without being a great movie, it has a little bit of everything to entertain you on a Friday night and delight horror thriller lovers.
Movie Review
It doesn’t always work, but it knows how to correctly apply the rules of the genre and borrow ideas from other referential films. The ideas worked before, they work now, even if everything is blatantly “familiar” and the bad guy is not exactly Hannibal Lecter.
It has its charm, its BBC-like “British” photography and perhaps precisely because of that, it sometimes tends to drift over to the made-for-tv film side of the road, with some “easy” and not very elaborated sequences.

Neil Cross has admitted that a well-loved series character almost returned in the Luther film.
The novelist and TV writer has created a Netflix movie based on the BBC series, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, in which Luther is pitted against David Robey (Andy Serkis), a tech billionaire with deadly motives.
It’s the first Luther project since the fifth series in 2019, and is low on returning characters: the only other regular to appear is Dsu Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley).
However, in a new interview with The Independent, Cross opened up about the “temptation” he felt to bring back other characters in varying ways, including Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.
“Alice is not in this film, but that's not a kind of an act of exclusion – it's a sin of omission,” he said. “If anything, it's not an attempt to prove anything.

Idris Elba has said it is “stupid” for people to criticise him for his decision to stop describing himself as a “Black actor”.
In an interview last month to promote his new Luther movie, the star, 50, had discussed the topic of race.
“As humans, we are obsessed with race,” he had told Esquire. “And that obsession can really hinder people’s aspirations, hinder people’s growth. Racism should be a topic for discussion, sure. Racism is very real. But from my perspective, it’s only as powerful as you allow it to be.
“I stopped describing myself as a Black actor when I realised it put me in a box. We’ve got to grow. We’ve got to. Our skin is no more than that: it’s just skin. Rant over.”
The remarks, which Elba caveated by saying “Of course, I’m a member of the Black community”, provoked much debate on social media.

Developing a successful TV show into a movie is a tricky old business: go too big and you risk jumping the shark; play it safe and it’s slightly more polished business as usual. For the most part, Luther: The Fallen Sun – the first feature-length outing for Idris Elba’s beloved, rule-bending detective – plots a skilful course between the two. But a Netflix-sized upgrade, it seems, can be both a gift and a curse…
Serving as both a continuation of the show and a standalone adventure, The Fallen Sun is surprisingly self-contained, with just enough exposition up-front to ensure that newbies aren’t lost and a handful of references to past cases littered throughout for fans to pick up on.

Misery is part of the “Luther” equation. It’s visited on suspects and victims and detectives and, to some extent, the audience watching it. Over five seasons, it’s been a cornerstone of the BBC crime drama, a neverending series of rock-bottoms.
That overpowering darkness has been a major “Luther” throughline, coupled with the shuffling in and out of the coworkers and compatriots of Dci John Luther (Idris Elba). He’s had partners — in most senses of the word — die in front of him. He’s uncovered grisly killings and mutilated bodies. Those five seasons have been a steady dose of one-upping, to see how much one man can survive.

"Luther," the British crime series that saw Idris Elba as a rule-bending detective tracking down gruesome serial killers, jumps into the movies with "Luther: The Fallen Sun." The film plays out like a feature-length version of the series, but don't worry — even if you've never watched a single episode of "Luther," the film gives you pretty much all the info you need from the start. We learn that Elba's Detective Chief Inspector John Luther is a cop who gets results. We also learn that he frequently gets those results by bending rules and even breaking laws. He's like the U.K.'s version of "Dirty Harry," sort of.
At the start of the film, Luther catches the eye of David Robey, a resourceful tech billionaire and serial killer who seems to be so wealthy and powerful that he can practically do whatever he wants, including staging ultra elaborate crime scenes.

Luther, the BBC crime drama starring Idris Elba as a rule-adverse detective, was swiftly overtaken by cinematic ambition. What began as a relatively humble cop series set in a crime-ridden London became increasingly more absurd as it went on. By its fifth series, Luther was dealing with a killer in a clown mask shooting people full of nails. Luther: The Fallen Sun, a feature-length revival by Netflix, feels like an all-too-logical extension. The budget’s been upped considerably. Hollywood’s own Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo have been air-lifted in for support. And it’s fun, in the patently ridiculous way these sorts of zhuzhed-up thrillers tend to be.
The Fallen Sun isn’t much of a Bond audition for Elba – who’s had to shoot down rumours he’s the next 007 yet again this week – but it’s a solid argument for making him the next Batman. Here’s...

Idris Elba may have taken himself out of the running to play James Bond, but he’s got a pretty terrific franchise already going playing John Luther, the dogged and troubled British detective. The title character of the hit BBC series that’s been running periodically since 2010 has now been given the big-screen treatment with the new feature film directed and written by series veterans Jamie Payne and Neil Cross, respectively. Well, big screen for a little while, anyway, since Luther: The Fallen Sun is receiving only a limited theatrical release before premiering on Netflix next month.
The creators have cannily threaded the needle with this feature installment, designed to please longtime fans while providing an easy entry point for newcomers. The movie plays like a series episode on steroids, with significantly bigger production values and a darker tone (and that’s saying something) that comes close to horror-film territory.

It’s been promised for some time, and it’s almost upon us: the big-screen version of Idris Elba series Luther.
That’s if you watch it in the cinema, of course. The film is getting a limited theatrical release, but then will be available to stream on Netflix from 10 March.
However, it’s thanks to this streaming service budget that fans are going to see the grizzled detective in situations the BBC simply couldn’t afford.
Have you ever wanted to see Luther inciting a riot while breaking out of prison? Firstly, who hasn’t, and secondly, you will! Have you ever wondered what Luther would look like walking up a snowy moutain range? Wonder no more. And, while fans of the series are used to seeing Elba on footchases around London’s grimiest streets, this time we’ll see him dodging tubes on the London underground.
But of course,...
That’s if you watch it in the cinema, of course. The film is getting a limited theatrical release, but then will be available to stream on Netflix from 10 March.
However, it’s thanks to this streaming service budget that fans are going to see the grizzled detective in situations the BBC simply couldn’t afford.

Netflix has released the official trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun, its long-in-the-works Luther stand-alone follow-up movie that returns Idris Elba as John Luther, the complicated detective behind the BBC crime drama that ran for five seasons on the BBC.
The plot: A gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.
The trailer opens with Dsu Martin Schenk, played by the returning Dermot Crowley, being informed that Luther (Elba) has escaped prison. But Luther has a very good reason for doing so as a serial killer is terrorizing London. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther is determined to finish the job by any means necessary.

The BBC One series "Luther" is one of the most brutally bleak detective shows ever made, but actor Andy Serkis was apparently shocked with just how dark the movie was going to be when he first read the script. Serkis is playing the film's villain, a millionaire serial killer who uses technology to blackmail his enemies and force others to do his bidding. GamesRadar released an image of Serkis from the upcoming film, along with some quotes from an interview with Total Film, and Serkis said he was genuinely taken aback by the depths of human wickedness within the script -- almost enough to not want to take part.
Serkis's reaction to screenplay for "Luther: The Fallen Sun" reminds me of when Patrick Stewart read the script for Jeremy Saulnier's punk-rock siege thriller "Green Room" and it made him feel "so unsafe." Stewart went on to give one of...

Andy Serkis knows a thing or two about being dark. The actor came to most people’s attention with his performance as Gollum in Lord of the Rings, shocking audiences with his portrayal of a goblin creature. Since then, he has returned to darkness many times, most recently bringing killer symbiote Carnage to the big screen by directing Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Heck, even his take on Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman had seen some things.
But few roles have disturbed Serkis like millionaire David Robey, the villain he plays in the upcoming movie Luther: The Fallen Sun. Speaking with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Serkis admitted, “I don’t think I’ve come across anything quite as dark for a long time.” The script forced him to ask, “do I really actually at this point in the world and time and my life, want to go down this particular...
