Healing from past trauma, film preservation, Isis, libraries, chimps, rats, and cats — these were just a few of the subjects and stories that this year’s documentary offerings brought us. With 2017 wrapping up, we’ve selected 21 features in the field that left us most impressed, so check out our list below and, in the comments, let us know your favorites.
Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (Steve James)
Steve James’ filmography has long been about finding entry into larger conversations through intimate portraits. The director’s landmark debut, Hoop Dreams, and latter-day efforts like 2014’s monument to critic Roger Ebert, Life Itself, don’t have much in common on the surface, but they both use their central characters to tell larger stories about big picture topics like structural dysfunction and the purpose of film criticism. That double purpose is the quiet genius of James’ latest documentary, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Catfight (Onur Tukel)
Who knew that one of the year’s most potent representations of America’s addiction to abrasive conflict would be Anne Heche and Sandra Oh beating each other to a pulp? Onur Tukel’s Catfight is an unabashedly silly and political film, but it’s also a funny one, with its two lead actresses literally and figuratively hurling themselves into their roles. Heche and Oh play...

In many ways, it’s been the year of the self-reliant female in animation, headlined by”Zootopia’s” Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), Ellen DeGeneres’ forgetful but streetwise Blue Tang from “Finding Dory,” the eponymous teenage Polynesian in “Moana” (Auli’i Cravalho), the eternally optimistic Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) from “Trolls” and the trio of gals from “Sing.”

The Desperados #CityHack campaign has seen 3 opposing teams from 3 of the UK’s trendiest and most cosmopolitan cities go head to head. The 4th challenge is what all the teams have been building towards. A culmination of creative guile, imagination, expression, and the desire to win!
Challenge 1 required them to flaunt their video production and editing skills by creating music video, and challenge 2 to show off their promotional styles and ability to create eye-catching attractions. Later, challenge 3 gave them the chance to tailor and hold a party, which portrayed the maverick spirit and mood of their respective cities.
After weeks of hard work and challenges the #CityHack teams have finally reached the finish line. “Hack The Bill” this time sees the teams not only pit themselves against each other, but also go up against world renowned DJ Sub Focus.

We chat to Peter Harness, writer of Doctor Who and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, currently airing on Sunday nights on BBC One...
Writer Peter Harness is currently on a roll. After attracting praise for his work on Wallander, his Doctor Who episode Kill The Moon brought him to more mainstream attention. But it’s his current work which should propel him to the A-List of British writing talent, a place fully deserved. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, the 800+ page period fantasy novel, considered by many to be unadaptable, has debuted as a TV series on the BBC to rave reviews (not least on this site).
One of the adaptation's key strengths is the streamlined nature of the script, which still captures perfectly the world and characters created by novelist Susanna Clarke. For that, Perter Harness must earn the plaudits. Proving to be a very charming and clever guy, he took the...

David Giuntoli got his Hollywood start in 2003 as a castmember on MTV's Road Rules: South Pacific, and while he later appeared on the network's The Challenge in 2007, he landed his biggest TV role in 2011 playing detective Nick Burkhardt on NBC's Grimm. The fantasy drama series returns this Friday with its fourth season, and while there are a lot of questions left to be answered on screen - including Nick's status as a Grimm - there is one thing we can be sure of off screen: David's hotness. Is it his charming smile? His shirtless physique? Or maybe that grin? Here, we investigate all the reasons David should have heartthrob status.

Films from notables Nick Cave, Kevin Smith and Terry Gilliam, and another featuring Downton Abbey vet Dan Stevens are helping fill this weekend’s box office, despite studio blockbuster debuts for The Maze Runner and This Is Where I Leave You.
In all, 14 specialty films are debuting this weekend, at the front edge of awards season and the time of year when “serious” films hit the screens left and right. We have The Guest, with Stevens; The Zero Theorem by Gilliam; Smith’s Tusk; Tracks, the latest from the producers of The King’s Speech; and Cave’s doc 20,000 Days On Earth.
And, like a TV informercial, there’s more: the doc Pump, boundary-jumper Stop The Pounding Heart; and Swim Little Fish Swim. Just to fill out the marquees, we also have Tribeca-winning doc Keep On Keepin’ On; Flamenco, Flamenco; Hector And The Search For Happiness; Iceman; Hollidaysburg; and Not Cool.

Seth Meyers will host the Emmy Awards. I am expecting Venn Diagrams.
Looks like it’s time for Fox News to get mad with Fox Broadcasting. Again. Here’s the mailer the animated comedy is using to get Emmy voters’ to support.
After fighting for survival by introducing an old Big Brother twist, The Real World has been renewed for another season.
MTV has ordered Slednecks, a reality series from the producer of Buckwild set in rural Alaska.
It’s looking likely CBS will cancel The Mentalist, as one of the few shows not renewed by the network. So the series’ studio is looking for another home for the show in case the axe does fall. One likely home is TNT which already plays repeats of The Mentalist.
Sam Trammell will star in Amazon’s next original series pilot. Cocked is about a man who is forced to reconnect...

It's so simple a comedic concept that many filmmakers would walk past it due to sheer obviousness: a mockumentary about a handful of very old yet very childish vampires who sometimes try to assimilate into the modern world but mostly stay cooped up in their New Zealand estate so they can bicker about each other and bitch about the modern world.
But that's the beauty of an "obvious" idea: all it takes is a small infusion of creativity from a bunch of very funny people, and an obvious idea becomes something that will appeal to a wide array of movie geeks. That's what some pretty hilarious New Zealanders have pulled off with What We Do in the Shadows, a comedy that one could easily describe as a Christopher Guest-style mockumentary mixed with a very clever satire of reality shows like The Real World or Big Brother -- but that'd...

As much as I enjoy watching Amanda, once the no-nonsense, naughty babysitter-type of the house, turn into the most heinous houseguest in a season that should really be called Big Brother 15: The Heinosity, I have to say that I found Big Brother terribly uncomfortable last night. Every moment of it. Elissa‘s inability to lie to Amanda bothered me. Aaryn‘s tearful despair bothered me. Obviously Amanda’s Rhubarb Lady-drunk-on-rhubarb-absinthe meltdown bothered me. And weirdly — and perhaps most of all — Andy‘s weak attempt to console Elissa after the Amanda diatribe and endear her to his side bothered me. Face it, Big Brother 15 is the Breaking Bad of reality TV: Everyone in it is a tad despicable (or more!), and it makes for a harrowing and fascinating ride.
Luckily, we were treated to a few quotable quotes from our twisted brigade of houseguests. Here were my five favorites of the episode.

It's time to find out the Mvp and his or her nominee, plus who is going to win the second Power of Veto in the "Big Brother 15" house? Unless you watch the live feeds and you're already way ahead of this.
Nomination Fallout
Nobody is overly surprised by Elissa and Helen being on the block. Helen's upset but determined that they are going to win Pov. Oh, if wishing made it so, Helen.
Meanwhile, Candice has completely figured out what is going on in the house, moreso than any other hamster (and this also holds true on the live feeds). She knows an all-guys alliance is running the show and that Aaryn is just Jeremy's puppet. What's too bad is that Candice can't seem to round up an alliance to go against the guys because the guys have gotten their hooks into too many people around the house.
Speaking of Jeremy,...

The feeds came back late Thursday night (June 27) in the "Big Brother" house after the first Power of Veto competition -- don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled, but be to sign up for the live feeds to follow along with all the fun for yourself!
Spoiler Alert
So, it sounds as though McCrae has won the Power of Veto. Kaitlin, David, Aaryn and Jeremy are celebrating hard-core, but the rest of us know better.
McCrae has a secret alliance with Elissa, so now he either risks putting her up and having her voted out, or he doesn't put her up and incurs the wrath of the rest of the house.
What do you think he should do? Does he take Jessie or Candice off? If Elissa goes up, does she have any chance of staying?
The challenge was a spell-a-word game and it also sounds like...

They "didn't come with soundtracks,” the author Mohsin Hamid recently mused in an essay on why he came to love novels. Readers of them, unlike movie watchers, "got more of the source code -- the abstract symbols we call letters and words -- and assembled more of the story themselves."
As the wide release of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" nears, Hamid's metaphor feels almost like a challenge. F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous work is definitive American source code, its symbols lodged in the minds of generations of readers. Can watching a film version of this code, as cracked by someone else, ever match the pleasure of reading the book?
Not as long as it continues to be adapted the way it has been for decades, according to Joseph O'Neill. The novelist, whose slow-burning thriller Netherland drew comparisons to The Great Gatsby when it was published in 2008, is...

Over the last year, MTV and Nickelodeon have tapped into viewers' nostalgia by resurrecting a few of their long-gone but still-beloved series for special runs to much fan fervor.
Nickelodeon kicked off the trend last March with the invention of their midnight to 2 a.m. '90s Are All That block, featuring reruns of Rugrats, Kenan & Kel, Pete & Pete, The Amanda Show, All That, and Clarissa Explains It All.

Physical comedy is divided by a fine line between being truly funny and just being dumb. Certain comedians, like Chevy Chase or Dick van Dyke, could tell the difference, and execute pratfalls or other moments of physical humor with class, telling us something about their character as they fell. The challenge of tonight’s episode of New Girl was to create a series of situation that relied on physical payoffs and build ups while still keeping the reins on those character-centered moments.
And, surprise surprise, it all pretty much works out. This is even more of a shock considering that the setup for this episode seemed tenuous at best. Schmidt is tired of carrying Jess, who is unable to pay her bills because of her continued lack of employment. To force her hand, he cuts off the gas to the apartment, robbing everyone of hot water.

Hello all, and welcome! Before I get down to recapping this week's eventless go-sees and subsequent waste of a good prison rental space, I'd like to discuss the Tyrabomb that was dropped this week (which I saw via terrifying Instagram post): namely, that the theme of Cycle 20 of America's Next Top Model (yes, it somehow got renewed) will be Boys And Girls. Yes, you read correctly – Tyra, assumedly in a scramble to salvage the rapidly sinking SS Antm, has revoked her pledge to never have male contestants on her show (Isis excluded) and swallowed her claim that there are no name-recognition male models. I admit, there was a time when I had dreams of becoming a model, but Tyra had shut her doors to my unfortunate gender. I feel slighted, overlooked, and frankly, disappointed in Antm. All I can say is Their Loss.
Now on to this week's episode!

A mini Sopranos reunion is coming to The Good Wife...
"President Roslin's solving crime! With Hugh of the Borg!"
Yiiikes, with the Olympics out of the way, there's a whole lot of TV. I'm still figuring out how my DVR is going to catch all of it.
News
Former General Hospital star Greg Vaughan is headed to Salem. Vaughn will join Days of Our Lives as Sami's brother Eric, who was last played by Ae-fave Jensen Ackles (remember the early rumors that Eric would turn out to be gay?)

A new three-part online series for Defence Force Recruiting aims to highlight to the public there is more to the Air Force than the pilots.
Created by Gpy&R Melbourne, the ‘Impossible Airfield’ series features 250 troops from less flashy roles within the Air Force, such as plumbers, medics, cooks and logistical personnel, as they’re set a challenge to complete in just 36 hours.
The challenge is for the force to travel to the ‘middle of nowhere’, build a fully operational airfield and land Australia’s largest army aircraft, a C-17 Globemaster in 36 hours.
The episodes contain links within the videos for viewers to learn more about the featured jobs of the troops.
The combined videos are aimed to be both a documentary and interactive recruitment ad.
Chris Northam, Gpy&R’s creative director said: “Impossible Airfield is the biggest, most ambitious project we’ve undertaken for the Defence Force. Watching...

Have you been watching New Girl? It's a pretty good show. They're funny -- especially Schmidt. She's adorkable. The unresolved sexual tension thing is not bad.
My one knock is this; where the hell are those perky hipsters supposed to be living? Not what city -- although that's an unsolved mystery in its own right (it looks like La, but I'm convinced they're pretending its Chicago). More specifically, however, what is with that apartment? It's enormous. Even for TV, it's cavernous... four bedrooms and an industrial bathroom, replete with lockers. Obviously, it's meant to be a loft, like this one in Los Angeles. But the 3-bedroom, 1,200 square foot loft listed at that site goes for $3,000 per month. Jess and her roomies have more than twice that much space (in the bathroom alone), a huge terrace, amazing sunlight, roof access and Four bedrooms. Four.
Let's say Jess' fictional, 2800 sq ft, four-bedroom loft,...

Grimm 1.07 "Let Your Hair Down" Review
As a proponent of heavily serialized drama, character development is one of the major things that I look for when deciding whether or not to stick with a new show. Even though you have to give some a little more time than others, there has to be some sense that the people on screen are characters that are going somewhere and have their own sets of hopes, fears, and aspirations that give them some coloring. Though watching a crime be solved will always be intriguing to me, mostly because my degree is in criminology, there has to be more to the characters in a procedurally-based show than complex legal lingo and generic cop platitudes that make them look less like people from the real world (as opposed to The Real World) and more like the means to an end that are only there to bring you 42 minutes of justice.

"Twenty years ago," blogs the New Yorker's Sasha Frere-Jones today, "I spent an afternoon shuffling around Rocks In Your Head, a record store that once did business on Prince Street. (It closed in 2006.) My friend Jim worked the counter, and we were listening to a new album, over and over: Nirvana's Nevermind. At some point, Vernon Reid — the guitar player and founder of Living Colour — came in. He listened to four songs, nodded approvingly, and approached the counter. 'Metallica plus R.E.M. That's really smart.' He bought a copy and left."
Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills, who formally announced the amicable dissolution of R.E.M. yesterday, will surely be hoping their band will be remembered as more than half the formula for another band ten years their junior (and, for what it's worth, I personally believe they will be), but if this anecdote is the first...

On Aug. 1, 1981 MTV aired its first music video and television was forever changed. Turns out that wouldn't be the last time the upstart cable network-turned-media titan would change the TV game.
Below, we've gathered what we deem to be the most memorable moments in MTV's 30 year history. Some are good (the raw talent Kurt Cobain and Nirvana unplugged captured on tape), some not so good (Interrupting Kanye) and others we still don't know how to categorize (Snooki). And because we can't think of everything (trust us, we've tried), we probably left out some important moments. Add them in the comments section below.
1. Boxers or Briefs? -- In April 1994, one high school student had a burning question for President Bill Clinton. Luckily an MTV-organized forum facilitated an answer ("Usually briefs"). And we were just glad no one thought to do this when Ronald Reagan was in office.
2. Nirvana unplugged -- In November 1993, Kurt Cobain,...
