Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League, who has led the theater chain since he co-founded it more than two decades ago, will assume a new role as executive chairman as a new CEO, former Starbucks executive Shelli Taylor, will take over as chief executive.
Taylor starts Friday. She most recently served as president of United Planet Fitness Partners, the largest franchise group of the gym chain, and before that spent almost 20 years at Starbucks.
League, who with his wife Karrie League started Alamo Drafthouse with one theater in Austin in 1997, will lead the board of directors and continue to guide creative initiatives for the theater chain, sister company Mondo, and the genre festival Fantastic Fest. He’ll also continue to lead the chain’s booking and programming strategy. League is also cofounder of distribution company Neon with Tom Quinn, which released the box-office hit and Oscar-winning “Parasite.”

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has announced an emergency relief fund for its furloughed staff as a result of Covid-19. They will receive a supplemental two weeks’ worth of pay and their health coverage will be covered through the end of April.
The current pandemic has prompted Dratfhouse founders Tim and Karrie League to create a new relief in partnership with the Emergency Assistance Foundation. This is seeded with $2 million dollars from their Alamo Community Fund. There is currently an Alamo Family Fund portal open for donations. Applications for the furloughed company-owned staff members in need are expected to be opened up next week.

AMC is not the only prominent theater chain wading into the monthly ticket subscription game as MoviePass scrambles. IndieWire confirms that Austin-headquartered Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will beta test its own Alamo Season Pass in Yonkers, NY. The Alamo Season Pass waitlist is currently accepting applicants; selected recipients will be notified later this summer.
“The beta test will be run exclusively at our Yonkers, NY location, with the first invites going out on July 18th,” wrote an Alamo Drafthouse spokesperson. “Our guests have been asking for quite some time for us to offer an affordable monthly subscription plan that allows for unlimited movies and the ability to reserve tickets in advance at Alamo Drafthouse. We plan to test a variety of models and pricing structures to see what works as a sustainable model. At this time there’s no firm timeline for a wider rollout to other Alamo Drafthouse locations, but...

A new deep-dive report at Splinter, the news arm of Gizmodo Media Group, alleges that Texas-based theater chain Alamo Drafthouse has long minimized a variety of sexual assault and harassment allegations made against both patrons and employees. In September of last year, IndieWire reported on allegations from five women against former Drafthouse associate and Ain’t It Cool News founder Harry Knowles. One of those women, former Drafthouse employee Jill Lewis, spoke to the outlet about her own claims made against a patron nearly a decade ago.
Lewis told the outlet that she was grabbed and harassed by a long-time patron of the theater, and when she contacted the theater’s owners, Tim and Karrie League, they “had a dilemma: The customer lived with a traumatic brain injury, and was one of the chain’s most loyal customers. They knew he seemed to struggle with impulse control.” They worried that...

Opening theatrically on Friday, September 7, in selected cities across the U.S., Jiří Barta's stop-motion animated film Toys in the Attic is a handmade delight. Barta, who hails from the Czech Republic, is a shy, unassuming man with a vivid imagination. He visited Fantastic Fest with his film in 2010 -- see photos below of him with Karrie League during the Q&A after the screening, along with a close-up of one of the toys -- and now his incredible work can be seen by a wider audience in North America. To be sure, Toys in the Attic will not remind anyone of the Pixar films, beyond the ancient, shared premise of toys coming to life. It is not a thrill ride or a sentimental comedy,...

How many movie fans does it take to paddle down the Guadalupe River to a Drafthouse Films screening of Klown? Even after the Ultimate Klown Canoe Trip on Saturday, there’s still no answer for that. All I know is that film critics are much better at being witty and snarky than they are at canoeing. Nonetheless, the endless amounts of free beer definitely helped distract us from the fact that we were outside and exercising. The weather was even somewhat pleasant — low 90s and cloudy. Twitch’s Josh Hurtado and I did not know each other beforehand, but everyone else had already paired up and we were the odd men out. So, we grabbed our life jackets, paddles and canoe, hit the river and became fast friends. Right at the onset of our journey there was a massive pile up of canoes (and we had not even reached the “canoe-eating tree” yet!). Once...

Today has been a pretty fantastic day for me in regard to movie-related news. First, I received an incredibly hard to find DVD of one of my favorite films of 2010, Sound of Noise, complete with English subs. Next I got to schedule an evening with friends with the express purpose of exposing them to the joy that is Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive (and maybe a little drinking, too). Then I found out I’ll be seeing my most anticipated SXSW film two weeks before SXSW. These are all things you couldn’t care less about. But some news just broke that is sure to please thousands of movie lovers… Austin’s famed Alamo Drafthouse Theaters are branching out to the West coast and opening a theater in San Francisco. There’s no time table yet, and it probably won’t even open it’s doors until late 2013 at the earliest, but...

Germain was just wondering earlier this week about a possible Los Angeles location for the expanding Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which operates well-loved movie theaters in central Texas. Turns out the next big Alamo Drafthouse opening will be on the outskirts of Washington, DC, in Ashburn, Va. Starting in Spring 2012 the retail developers involved in a planned community area called One Loudoun [1] will begin construction on a 34,000 sq. foot cinema space, with plans for the Alamo Drafthouse to open doors on-site in Spring 2013. Read the press release below. One Loudoun Holdings, LLC, a joint venture of Miller and Smith and North America Sekisui House, LLC (Nash) and its retail development partner, Potomac Development Group, LLC, announce today that Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will open a new location at One Loudoun in Loudoun County, Virginia. The 34,000 square foot Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will be the first in the Washington, DC market area. Construction will...

Alamo Drafthouse is opening a theater at the newly completed One Loudoun retail space in Loudoun County, Virginia. The 34,000-square-foot facility, set to open in spring 2013, will be Alamo's first cinema in the Washington, DC area. Tim and Karrie League's Alamo Drafthouse currently comprises six theaters in Austin, TX, three in Houston, TX, three in San Antonio, TX, and one each in Winchester, Va, and Denver, Co. Alamo also plans to open theaters in NY and La. One Loudoun Holdings, a joint venture of Miller and Smith and North America Sekisui House and its retail development partner, Potomac Development Group, announced the news. Hey, 2011, you wanna pump the brakes for me? I can't believe we're already hearing announcements for Fantastic Fest programming. After all, FanTasia in Montreal is just kicking off today, Comic-Con is next week, and then we've got… oh, that's right, it's just over a month until we reach September, or as I like to call it, "The month I am gone at film festivals." We just finished making all of our arrangements for Toronto, and now we're starting to think about Fantastic Fest. This chain of movie theaters, the brainchild of loveable maniacs Tim and Karrie League, was founded in Austin, TX in the late 90s. Since then, it has garnered a reputation as one of the greatest movie houses on Earth; no hyperbole intended. For those unfamiliar, what sets The Alamo Drafthouse apart from so many paltry multiplexes is threefold. The Alamo boasts a full menu of tasty edibles from complex culinary triumphs to palate-pleasing comfort foods, and a wide array of beers and wines. MS150, the branch of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society that challenges riders to bicycle from Houston to Austin to raise money and awareness for Ms, is holding a fundraising screening of the most celebrated bicycle film, Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves. Join us on April 23rd for an outdoor screening and feast prepared by Executive Chef John Bullington.
On the lawn of Tim & Karrie League’s home, on what is surely to be a beautiful April evening (it’s Texas, after all), join your fellow bikers for a journey through this neo-realist classic about a poor man whose future is threatened by the simple act of a bicycle theft. De Sica’s film is widely praised as one of the greatest ever made – his sensitive and sympathetic camera captures the plight of a poor Italian man and his innocent son in a way that will tear at your heart.

I was rather shocked to find that even without a VIP badge, I had a low ticket number for the In the Attic screening today. When talking to Alamo co-founder Karrie League on Sunday and asking what her favorite films were, she mentioned In the Attic as one she's been trying to program for a long time (two years to be precise). Jette and I got tickets, then Debbie turned in her Secret Screening #2 ticket on a whim. It turns out she made the day of a first-time Fantastic Fest badgeholder who hadn't been to any screenings yet. I think some of the people in attendance were there reluctantly, but I hope they were as pleasantly surprised as I was.

That's how one of my 2009 Fantastic Fest Daily Dispatches started. It brings me right back to the fest. This is it, the final entry in our Fantastic Fest Flashbacks (we've already covered 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008). How the fest has grown. I'm looking at the screening schedule and it's now two columns of small fonts filling the page. So much to do and not enough hours to do it. The 2009 lineup ranged fromhorror-lite targeted to a younger audience like The Vampire's Assistant and Under the Mountain to the shocking Antichrist, and every possibility in between and around them. Literally something for everyone, Fantastic Fest 2009 seemed about as big as it can get, although we already know this year will be even bigger.

[Our thanks to Kier-La Janisse and the fine people at Fantasia for allowing us to reprint the following interview with Tim League and Simon Rumley originally conducted for the Fantasia blog.]
Simon Rumley blew my mind in 2006 with his debut genre feature The Living and the Dead, which swept up awards all over the festival circuit and established him as a major international talent. Despite the fact that he already had a healthy back-catalogue of indie films prior to The Living and the Dead, the response it received assured that he's been at home in genre films ever since. He's just finishing post on a new anthology film made with fellow British renegades Sean Hogan (Lie Still - released in the Us as The Haunting of #24) and Andrew Parkinson (Venus Drowning) called Little Deaths, and he's here in town at Fantasia to present the Canadian Premiere of his latest genre-bender, Red White and Blue.

It's Monday morning and time for a roundup of Austin film news! Let's see what's cooking:
The Austin Critics' Table Awards focuses on art, music and theater (and not film -- what, film isn't art?) but the group's 2010 awards include a local film composer, Graham Reynolds (A Scanner Darkly, I'll Come Running, Holy Hell). Reynolds won the John Bustin Award for Conspicuous Versatility. In addition, Golden Hornet Project, of which Reynolds is a founder (and the group's Facebook page also includes Tim and Karrie League among its Board of Directors), took home the Symphonic Performance award for "Symphony VI." You can hear some of Reynolds' work with film scores on Wednesday, June 23 when he performs a score he composed during a Paramount screening of the 1927 silent film Wings.I just found out that I'm not going to be able to attend Austin Film Society's gala Make Watch Love Film party this Friday,...

As I reported on Cinematical earlier this morning, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema announced today that Tim League is now the company's CEO. What exactly does this mean, and how does it affect moviegoers in Austin? Now that more detailed news than the press release I received is starting to appear, let's sort this out. Bear with me while I time-travel a bit to provide background, and then we can discuss the effects. (My sources are all listed at the end of the article.)
In 2004, Tim and Karrie League sold the company Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to a group of investors who planned to expand and franchise the Alamo brand name. The Leagues retained some financial interest in the company, as well as the right to use the Alamo Drafthouse name on the three theaters they owned in Austin: South Lamar, Village, and Downtown (then the one on Colorado). Whenever I've tried to explain to people that the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema company is not the same as the three Alamo Drafthouse movie theaters that founders Tim and Karrie League own in Austin, everyone ends up confused, including me. The Leagues sold the company in 2004 -- except for three theaters, for which they licensed the Alamo name back from the company -- and it's never been entirely clear to me what role, if any, they had in the franchise after that. What we do know is that they've built a solid reputation for combining movies, dining and other entertainment with their three Alamo Drafthouse movie theaters.
Today, it's a lot simpler. Effective immediately, Tim League is assuming the role of CEO of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and has plans to oversee and expand the brand's franchise operations. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema currently has nine locations spread throughout Austin, the greater Houston area,...

Song Kang Ho as "The Weird"
Fantastic Fest favorite The Good, The Bad, The Weird opens this Friday at Alamo South Lamar!
We of course think it’s every movie-lovers’ duty to check it out on the big screen, but if you don’t trust us as a reliable source, check out what some of the critics have been saying…
“A Full Throttle Thrill Ride.” V.A. Musetto, New York Post
“Critics Pick! Has an eye-popping energy all its own.” Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine
“****! Unadulterated guns-and-guts fun!” David Fear, Time Out New York
“Ridiculous Fun…A Must See. Make the effort. You’ll be glad you did.” Anton Sirius, Aint It Cool News
“Like John Wayne and Quentin Tarantino’s love child, “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” is pulpy, schlocky fun—a violent neo-Western that’s less interested in verisimilitude than it is in making sure you have a wickedly bang-up time.

Many of the film prints contained in the archive are not fully documented, so periodic inspections are conducted at which time we string up several “reel ones”, that is to say the first 15-20 minutes of different movies, for the purpose of taking note of the credit information, condition of the film and general plot information. For folks interested in print collecting, obscure films and movie history, it’s fascinating. Past “reel one” screenings have uncovered some real gems and some real boring doo-doo,...

The Alamo Guide
for April 2nd, 2010
What a week! First of all, if you got caught in the fiasco of the ticketing site for Weird Al last Friday, we’d like to apologize. We greatly underestimated how excited people were about this event, and it sold out in mere minutes, completely destroying the ticket server. We are, however, in talks with Weird Al’s posse about the possibilities of a second show, so sit tight and we’ll give you details as they come!
Lately, it has been crazy gorgeous outside. I guess this is the “nice” weather that comes around once a year. We’re taking advantage of it, this week specifically. We have two outdoor screenings! Tomorrow (Thursday), we’ve partnered with Amoa again to screen Nashville at the beautiful Laguna Gloria! Saturday, Tim and Karrie League are opening their home for a MS150 BeneFeast screening of Triplets Of Belleville!

Sure, The Highball’s doors have been open for a couple of weeks now, but that’s been what we in the biz call a “soft opening.” If you didn’t make it in during that time, don’t worry it’s not like there were more pillows anywhere or anything like that. It was just… softer. Younger. It was a more innocent time of wide-eyed wonder.
But with this event, they’re heading out into the world on their own, and just like you got to live by yourself and stay up all night eating junk food and experimenting with whatever social lubricant you were into after you graduated from high school, from this day forward they’ll be open hard, and the real fun will start!
