China has brought the figures, and it has brought the films to this year’s AFM as the country pushes the positive narrative of an industry in recovery from the woes of the past few years thanks to diverse content and a post-pandemic audience hungry for entertainment.
All told, there have been 40 Chinese film companies involved and more than 100 Chinese films showcased at AFM’s China Film Pavilion, providing an insight into an industry that has over the past few months inched its way ever closer to the record box office figures that were being enjoyed back in 2019.
The box office report released last week by film and cinema industry watchers Artisan Gateway for the Oct. 20-22 weekend showed revenue of just below $40 million, which was 11.9 percent down compared with the same period in 2019, but up 76.5 percent from the same weekend in 2022.

Big screen shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench will be swimming into theaters on August 4, 2023, and today the film has received its official rating from the MPA.
Like the previous film, Meg 2: The Trench has been rated “PG-13” for…
“Action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.”
Last week’s bloody official trailer suggested that Meg 2 could potentially be going a bit harder on the violence than the disappointing 2018 movie, but there was realistically no way Warner Bros. was going to risk potentially cutting into the sequel’s box office profits with an “R” rating.
The good news? As the trailer suggests, there are a lot of gruesome ways a massive shark can eat people – and other monsters, including a T-Rex this time around! – while still sticking to that PG-13 rating. After all, the three Megalodon sharks in the upcoming movie are so large that they’re literally swallowing humans whole,...

Here’s hoping the most hilarious moments aren’t in the over-the-top, action-packed trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Meg 2: The Trench. The stunts have a Fast and Furious feel – they are implausible yet impressive – and the plot surpasses the first film, The Meg (2018), in terms of megalodon encounters. In the original movie, Jason Statham battled a colossal sea creature, but in the sequel, there are not one, not two, but three Megs for Statham and crew to take on.
Statham’s joined in this wild adventure by Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, and Cliff Curtis.
The original The Meg was directed by Jon Turteltaub, but it’s Ben Wheatley who takes over the reins for the sequel. The Meg‘s Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris wrote the screenplay, based on Steve Alten’s novel The Trench. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Belle Avery serve as producers,...

Are we finally getting the movie we were hoping to get back in 2018? If this trailer for Meg 2: The Trench is any indication, Wheatley isn’t planning on letting us down.

Exclusive: Charles “Charlie” Wiggins, the most famous African American race car driver of the 1920s and 1930s, is to be the subject of a new biopic, whose producing partners will include racing staples IndyCar and Firestone.
Set in the roaring 20s and depression era 30s, Eraced will chronicle the triumphs and struggles of the once-legendary-now-little-known Charlie “Speed King” Wiggins, who worked his way from shoe shine to mechanic to star racer despite the inequities of segregation and Jim Crow laws. After being barred repeatedly from whites-only racing events, Wiggins became a leading light of the parallel Colored Speedway Association and won the prestigious annual Gold and Glory Sweep-stakes four times between 1926 and 1935. Despite his remarkable achievements, Wiggins died almost penniless thanks to crippling medical bills which he had to pay for decades after suffering a career-ending injury in 1936.
The pioneering sportsman will be inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame next week in Detroit.

Ben Wheatley is set to direct the sequel to 2018 monster movie “The Meg” for Warner Bros., according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
“The Meg” centered on a prehistoric Megalodon shark, extinct for 2 million years, that can chomp whales in half. Jason Statham starred in the first film as a shark expert and is expected to return for the sequel.
Screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the most recent draft of the script based off an initial draft by Dean Georgaris. All three shared credit on the first film which adapted the novel by Steve Alten.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Belle Avery are returning as producers on the sequel. Catherine Ying, Li Ruigang, E Bennett Walsh, Gerald Molen and Randy Greenberg are the executive producers.

An 80-foot prehistoric shark is returning to the big screen with “The Meg 2,” and Warner Bros. has hired “Rebecca” filmmaker Ben Wheatley to direct.
Development of the sequel comes two years after “The Meg” took in an impressive $530 million worldwide. That film revolved around the monstrous megalodon emerging from the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the world’s oceans in the Pacific.
Jason Statham is expected to reprise his role from the first movie, in which he portrayed a U.S. Navy diver sent to rescue other divers from a shark attack. Statham was a world-class diver on the British Commonwealth team before becoming an actor.

“I don’t know why everyone wouldn’t be looking [at a similar deal].”
The agreement between Universal and AMC Theatres is a watershed moment that accelerates the collapse of the theatrical window and does nothing to alleviate the ailing condition of the exhibition sector, according to insiders.
The deal, announced on Tuesday (July 27), allows Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (Ufeg) to put Universal and Focus Features films that screen at AMC’s US venues on PVoD after a minimum of 17 days.
AMC gets a share of the revenue – unconfirmed estimates have put it at 10% – and will be allowed to play the films on its own streaming site.

The Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival (Lacff) was born in the fall of 2017 with the aim to uncover and promote outstanding Chinese language and Chinese culture-focused film. Three years later Lacff 2019 continues this mission on Oct. 25-27th at the Downtown Independent Theater in Los Angeles.
With buzz around the entertainment industry it was hard to find Chinese talent, the founders of Lacff room for improvement. WaterTower Music has announced today’s release of the soundtrack to the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies), which will be released in theaters August 10, 2018. The soundtrack features music from the film composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (“The Town,” the “Equalizer” films, the “Shrek” franchise), and will be released on August 3rd, one week before the film is in theaters.

After two decades in the deep waters of development, prehistoric shark actioner “The Meg” is finally ready to swim into the late-summer box office.
Steve Alten, the author of the novel on which the film is based, thought many times over that the project might sink without a ripple. When Alten was 15 in 1975, he became a huge fan of Steven Spielberg’s smash hit “Jaws” — which inspired him to begin exploring the idea of a giant prehistoric shark species somehow surviving in today’s world.
Hollywood has produced plenty of shark movies since “Jaws,” but “Meg” was stuck in development hell for more than two decades. It’s finally being released on Aug. 10, starring Jason Statham, directed by Jon Turteltaub, and written by Dean Georgaris and brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber.

Warner Bros has dropped the first trailer for summer shark pic The Meg. The Jason Statham-starrer is a sci-fi thriller about a prehistoric 75-foot-long predator, the Megalodon, who threatens the lives of a research team trapped underwater — and, yes, the fate of the ocean itself. As far as summer popcorn fare, the tagline says it all: “Chomp On This.”
Jon Turtletaub directs from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber that’s based on the New York Times bestseller by Steve Alten.
The film is eyed to take a bite out of the Chinese box office. It was made with China, is set off the mainland’s coast and co-stars Li Bingbing. Plus, Statham is a big draw at local turnstiles.

"Pleased to eat you." With movies such as The Shallows and 47 Meters Down, we've been experiencing a shark-aissance in recent years, and Warner Bros. is looking to bring the water-based subgenre to a whole new level with the first official trailer for The Meg (based on Steve Alten's 1997 novel), complete with enough one-liners to hold fans over until the movie's August 10th release:
Press Release: "Jason Statham (“Spy,” “Furious 7,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Forbidden Kingdom,” “The Message”) star in the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies, “Last Vegas”).
In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside.

Exclusive: The impact of Sean Parker’s proposed first-run service would drastically increase the threat of global piracy and accelerate the decline of distribution windows everywhere, according to experts.
Several executives with high-level experience of the international business who spoke to Screendaily have warned of a potentially cataclysmic impact were Screening Room to go ahead.
They warn that the day-and-date service proposed by the Napster co-founder would be susceptible to unauthorised dissemination of content.
This in turn, they argue, would devalue international theatrical rights and jeopardise the viability of many feature projects and by extension the earning power of the mostly freelance base that works in film.
The UK Cinema Association has already spoken out, calling the plan a “massive risk to the future prosperity” of the film industry, while Europe’s International Union of Cinemas has expressed “great concern”.
