There are two very different sides to Netflix. On the one hand, there’s the glitz: the prestige-laden films by venerated directors (Roma; The Irishman; The Power of the Dog). The glossy hit series like Stranger Things or Squid Game. But then there’s the other stuff. Just as crucial to Netflix’s business model – perhaps more crucial – is the streamer’s extensive catalogue of less reputable material. From salacious true crime docs to paranormal investigation series, Netflix is teeming with programmes that fall somewhere between being knowingly pulpy and outright schlock. In a climate where new streaming services seem to launch every few months, adding to the competition and cutting into Netflix’s non-original content catalogue, it’s natural that Netflix would turn to whatever gets people watching. So when a programme like Ancient Apocalypse drops on the streaming service, you might be inclined to think it’s all just business as usual.

Veteran broadcaster Huw Edwards has been praised for the way in which he delivered the news of the Queen’s death on BBC One.
The Welsh journalist joined the BBC in 1984 and has been a fixture on British television for at least the last two decades since becoming the main presenter of the Ten O'Clock News in 2003.
Over the years, Edwards has delivered the news of Barack Obama’s first election, the results of the EU referendum, the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and now the death of Queen Elizabeth II to the nation.
Wearing a black suit and tie, in line with the BBC’s dress code for when a member of the royal family dies, Edwards told viewers Thursday (8 September): “A few moments ago Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
He then read out the statement from the Palace...

Meghan Markle’s deeply personal op-ed about her experience suffering a miscarriage in July was published Wednesday in the New York Times, and the reactions across the internet have been polarizing.
The loudest voices are those expressing support, awe, and gratitude to the Duchess of Sussex for sharing a deeply personal story on such a little-talked-about subject — all while knowing that she would undoubtedly receive more of the online harassment and bullying that she has suffered ever since she joined the royal family.
Among her champions was Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern whose affair with President Bill Clinton thrust her into the national spotlight and made her tabloid fodder for years to come.
“‘What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? the world would split open,'” Lewinsky tweeted Wednesday, quoting the poet Muriel Rukeyser.
She added: “A private pain shared publicly may not help you,...

Boris Johnson, arguably the closest politician Britain has to the reality TV-style credentials of Donald Trump, has resigned as Foreign Secretary over the UK’s Brexit strategy. In keeping with BoJo’s past political predilections, the news has erupted across social media as industry personalities and political and media commentators weigh in far and near. Boris Johnson is trending worldwide.
The flamboyant former Mayor of London and vocal Leave supporter quit the Tory frontbench today, hours after the departure of Brexit Secretary David Davis, following the release of Prime Minister Theresa May’s controversial Brexit plan, which essentially lays the ground for a soft exit from the European Union. A Downing Street spokesman said, “This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The prime minister thanks Boris for his work.”

Most of this year's Oscar contenders are based on historical events – and there are academics waiting to pounce on every slip-up and blunder. But there is more to a great movie than getting the facts straight
• Top 10 biopics
• Alex von Tunzelmann's Reel History series
It's Oscars time again, and this year many of the big contenders have one thing in common. Two thirds of the contenders for best film are based on historical events. History also picks up four out of five best actor nominations, two out of five best actresses, and three out of five directors. So fierce has the competition among historical films become that it was reported that academic "history assassins" were paid handsomely by marketing consultants to spot errors in other studios' films. These errors would then be filtered out subtly through blogs, undermining rivals' Oscar hopes.

If any TV show could ever break the internet, it would probably be Sherlock. With the possible exception of Doctor Who, no British TV series has ever generated quite such a fervent, passionate and obsessive fanbase.
So when last night's series three finale concluded with that twist (Miss me?)... oh boy. Keep reading for a brief sample of Twitter's reactions to 'His Last Vow'.
Tumblr went into meltdown!
And the conspiracy theories have already begun.
Let me guess - Moriarty survived blowing his brains out by putting a squash ball in the gun barrel? #Sherlock

Move over JFK.
Christ. With the return of Moriarty there are now more conspiracy theories surrounding the roof scene than the grassy knoll. #Sherlock
— Gaz Weetman (@GazWeetman) January 12, 2014
And the cynics are getting in early.
#Sherlock s04e01: "How Moriarty survived blowing his brains out is not important. We meant it to be ambiguous.
