Some very good news over the long-distance relay for fans of alt-history sci-fi series For All Mankind. Apple TV+ has decided to not only renew the main show for a fifth season, but also commission a new spin-off sibling, Star City, which will explore the space race story from the Russian side of events.
Season Four of For All Mankind reached 2003, and the well-established Mars base on Happy Valley became a hotbed of blue-collar dissent and authority crackdowns. And asteroid mining became a hot-button issues, with disagreements over where this rich new source of minerals and metals should be positioned to maximize their use.
The fifth season will see another time jump, meaning we're likely to say goodbye to veteran characters such as those played by Joel Kinnaman and Krys Marshall.
Yet the new spin-off offers the chance to see the likes of NASA-chief-turned-defector Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) again...

Apple TV+ isn’t done exploring the depths of space.
The streamer has renewed its drama series For All Mankind for Season 5. Additionally, Apple TV+ has given the green light to a spinoff series titled Star City, also from creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi.
Apple is billing Star City is “a propulsive paranoid thriller” which will explore a key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, it will explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.
“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of For All Mankind,” Wolpert and Nedivi said in a statement.

[This story contains major spoilers from the season four finale of For All Mankind.]
Krys Marshall had a different ending in mind for NASA Commander Danielle Poole. It’s fitting since For All Mankind is revisionist history, after all.
“It’s based on the premise of the Russians getting to the moon first, ahead of the Americans, and it sends our world into a place where the space race never ends,” explains Marshall of the Apple TV+ series. “Because of that, both technological advancements and social advancements continue in a way that they wouldn’t have had the space race been won by the U.S. The world as we know it is altered, I think, for the better.”
Her character began as one of a dozen female astronauts in 1969 and has grown over the four seasons of the Apple TV+ series — which span more than 30 years — to become a commander on Mars in 2003.

Danielle Poole is one of the best characters currently on TV, and Krys Marshall brings her to life beautifully, with so much passion and a keen insight into the character she embodies.
For All Mankind Season 4 Episode 5 was a doozy. As the tensions on Mars rise, Danielle and her longtime friend Ed Baldwin are increasingly at odds, and by the end of "Goldilocks," they had reached a tipping point that threatens everything they have been to each other through the decades.
You can read a full recap of the episode in the link above, and below, you can get a better understanding of the weight Danielle carries with her and how Marshall carries it on her capable shoulders.
Beware! Spoilers for the episode follow. Proceed at your own risk!
It's not very often that an actor gets to play a character with such depth throughout so many different phases of their life.

Miles steps off his flight to Mars and straight into the red planet’s version of an army bootcamp in episode two of the show’s fourth season, immediately discovering that due to the stalled asteroid mission, he’s been relegated from fuel technician to glorified janitor. Not only will he miss out on seeing Mars, but he’s been dumped in a dead man’s bunk underground with the rest of the proletariat. No current drama on television tries to cover as much ground, literally or figuratively, as For All Mankind. The fourth season of the Apple TV+ drama — set in an alternate version of history where the Soviets beat America to the moon, triggering a never-ending space race — splits its time between Houston, Moscow, and Mars. It is, at various points, a science-fiction epic, a political potboiler, a spy-thriller, and a workplace drama where one of the branch offices happens to be on the hostile surface of another planet.

While many of our favorite sci-fi shows seem to either be on hold or suddenly canceled, Apple TV+’s For All Mankind shows no sign of stopping. The alternate history show is blasting off with its fourth season on the streamer this November and, as always, the premiere is the most exciting part of the series’ return for those who are curious to see where all the characters have ended up after the traditional massive time jump.
The season four opening montage sets the stage for a new era, and clears away anything surplus to requirements. Unfortunately, that means that we’ve likely seen the last of Jodi Balfour’s Ellen Wilson for a while, as we’re informed that she and Bush won re-election, but the Democrats then swept to victory four years later with President Al Gore now in charge of the country. The acclaimed Apple TV+ show presents an alternate historical timeline beginning with the Moon Landing in 1969, though with the Soviet Union beating the U.S. to the feat. At what point did "For All Mankind" truly come into its own? Maybe it was as early as its resounding debut season, which flipped one of the most pivotal events in human history on its head — the United States beating the Soviet Union to the moon — with an alternate-history twist where Russia had won the space race and reinvigorated the Cold War. Then again, season 2 was the one to use this fascinating jumping-off point to achieve even greater heights, melding human conflicts and space nerdery into one ambitious storyline about the series of small, personal choices made in narrowly avoiding the onset of World War III in the 1980s. When season 3 took the action all the way to Mars another decade later with much of the original cast still involved, it was easy to imagine the whole enterprise coming apart at the seams. Instead, the series embraced its own flawed (but three-dimensional) characters,...

“For All Mankind” Season 4 is nearly here. And a trailer that just played on the first day of New York Comic Con (where they’re also screening the first episode of the new season) gives us our first taste of what’s to come. Watch it above.
If you’ve never seen “For All Mankind” — created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi — it’s an alternate history tale of the space race. The first season was set during the race to the moon, with America training a group of female astronauts and Russia getting there first.
Each subsequent season has moved further away from actual history while still incorporating details from real life. And, crucially, each season is set a decade after the previous season, meaning that old-age makeup technology is constantly being put to the test. (Sometimes it works better than others.)

Are you a science nerd who's become disheartened by our collective inability as a species to work together towards a common goal, to put ego and wealth and politics aside, and simply explore the cosmos for the betterment of our species? If you haven't been following along already, allow me to point you in the direction of "For All Mankind." I should clarify, this isn't the show to watch if you're looking for an escape from all the cynicism we've been seeing in our news headlines for the better part of the 21st Century. Rather, the Apple TV+ series shines a direct light on all our missteps through an alternate-history lens -- one in which the Russians won the space race by landing a man on the moon back in the 1960s, kicking off an even more intense game of one-upmanship between the world's superpowers locked in an eternal Cold War.

For All Mankind Season 3 threw the show’s alternate history space race into overdrive — what was once a contest between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. expanded to include a new competitor. Helios was much more than a would-be contender; until some fancy maneuvering on Dani Poole’s (Krys Marshall) part and Ed Baldwin’s (Joel Kinnaman) second thoughts, it looked like the privately owned space exploration company could beat NASA and Russian cosmonauts to Mars.
But while NASA may have sort of won the day, and Ed and his daughter Kelly (Cynthy Wu) established a base along with Dani’s team, tragedy and subterfuge loomed around the corner. Series creators Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi, and Matt Wolpert delivered one of their signature finales with “Stranger in a Strange Land”: a nailbiter full of bombast and heart, featuring another 10-year leap into the future, with...

Exclusive: Svetlana Efremova (The Americans) has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming fourth season of Apple TV+’s space drama series For All Mankind.
Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, For All Mankind explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended. The series presents an aspirational world where NASA astronauts, engineers and their families find themselves in the center of extraordinary events seen through the prism of an alternate history timeline — a world in which the Ussr beats the US to the moon.
The third season shifted the action to the early ’90s with a race to a new planetary frontier: Mars. The Red Planet became the new front in the Space Race not only for the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but also an unexpected new entrant with a lot to prove and even more at stake.
