In a heartfelt post on the official Xbox website, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has announced that Microsoft plans to discontinue production of the Xbox 360, officially retiring the console so the company can put an increased focus on the current-gen Xbox One.
Having celebrated its 10-year anniversary just a few months back, Spencer says in the post that the 360 helped to “redefine an entire generation of gaming,” and thanked fans for their continued support and passion.
The statement reads:
The Xbox 360 helped redefine an entire generation of gaming at Microsoft. I am incredibly proud of all of the work and dedication that went into development of the Xbox 360 hardware, services and games portfolio over the last decade. And I’m grateful to the fans for their continued passion and support.

Despite the recent buzz surrounding comments made by Xbox boss Phil Spencer and leaks suggesting the existence of a mystery console going by the name of Xbox neXt, Microsoft has no such plans to release a console under that name, according to the company.
In a statement given to IGN, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the ‘Xbox neXt’ name that appeared on the profile of a visual designer working at Xbox (below) is actually an old internal team name that the company used for the Xbox One.
Xbox neXt was an old internal team name for a group that worked on releasing Xbox One and is not related to a future console. We have nothing further to share.

Bad news, PC gamers – Xbox boss Phil Spencer has essentially ruled out releasing Halo 5: Guardians on the platform, preferring instead, to focus on bringing future, unreleased games to Windows 10.
Despite the fact that big name Microsoft exclusives like Forza 6: Apex and Killer Instinct are coming to Windows 10, Spencer says that Halo 5 is a game that was built specifically for consoles rather than as a PC experience.
Speaking yesterday at the company’s Build conference, Spencer said:
In terms of Halo Fps on PC, I think there’s a ton of opportunity for us right now, but I don’t want to get into a world where we’re looking back, like at Halo 5. It doesn’t mean there’s nothing there that could ever end up on PC, but I’d much rather look forward with what our plans are.

Microsoft has promised this feature would be coming for a while, but at least we now get a release window.
When Xbox One first launched it was stated that all units would work as development units for small creators. Then the idea kind of fizzled with Microsoft reminding us here and there that it was still coming. Good news, it really is! And soon!
In the next Windows 10 Update titled Anniversary all Xbox One units will become dev units. The update releases for both PC and Xbox One this summer, with no official date. Windows testers will obviously be getting it even sooner. Starting last year Xbox One became a "Windows 10 Device" because the Os is what is running the system.
However beyond the release details there was no further information on how exactly this will work. The good news is that the Microsoft Event, Build, is still going on...

Thanks to streaming services like Twitch, the popularity of eSports has already skyrocketed in recent years, but Xbox boss Phil Spencer expects it to go even higher in the future. Speaking recently at the competitive Halo World Championship, Spencer said he fully expects eSports to reach a peak in popularity that matches that of traditional sports.
I think for the industry, eSports is going to be as big as regular sports. You look at the number of people who play games, you look at the different platforms people are playing on, you look at the money that’s pouring in, the broadcasts.
Spencer’s not wrong. The cash pot for the winners of tournaments held for the likes of League Of Legends, the Street Fighter series and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – while not on the same level as, say, Football – are still increasing on a yearly basis. Spencer believes the popularity...

Boasting an increased Gpu and native 4K support, sources close to Kotaku claim that Sony is pushing full steam ahead with an enhanced version of the PS4, simply titled the PlayStation 4.5.
At the time of writing, there’s no word on whether PS4 owners will have the option to upgrade their current-gen hardware, or if there are plans in place to launch the hardware revision as a completely new product.
However Sony’s plans fall on the back-end, the report does indicate that the alleged upgrade is a marked step up from the current PS4, which is only capable of displaying photos and videos in 4K resolution – providing you have the required set-up, of course.
Viewed as a mid-generation stop-gap between now and the inevitable PlayStation 5, the yet-to-be-confirmed hardware will allow developers to push visual effects – perhaps opening up a graphical split between PS4 and PS4.5 much like the minimum...

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has taken to Twitter to reassure fans that the Xbox One isn’t going anywhere despite multiple first-party studio closures. Following the disconcerting news yesterday that one of Microsoft’s first-party developers – UK-based studio Lionhead – is to close its doors, it has since emerged that the Fable developer may not be the only casualty.
The likes of BigPark, Function Studios, Good Science and Lxp have all disappeared from the list of first-party developers on Microsoft’s website, according to VideoGamer, fuelling speculation that they’ve all suffered the same fate as Lionhead.
Understandably, the news has caused Xbox owners to question whether the console’s future is in jeopardy, a notion that Xbox boss Phil Spencer was quick to stamp out on Twitter, promising that the console isn’t going anywhere.
Spencer further commented that:

Despite speculation that Microsoft may be on the cusp of announcing some kind of new hardware in the near future, Xbox One boss Phil Spencer has said otherwise on the Major Nelson podcast.
Am I going to break open my console and start upgrading individual pieces of my console? That’s not our plan. There is something special about what happens with a console. You buy an appliance-like device; you plug it into your TV; it works when you plug it in. It’s not like I’m going to ship a screwdriver set with every console that comes out.
The tongue-in-cheek response comes as recent comments made by Spencer – some speculated – suggested that the Xbox One would follow suit with the PC and introduce some form of system that would allow users to keep the power of their console more in line with the the open source platform.

As is usually the case when Xbox boss Phil Spencer open his mouth in public, some interesting words concerning the future of the Xbox One and the games console industry as a whole subsequently emerged to suggest that Microsoft have some new hardware planned for the near future.
As reported by UK publication The Guardian, Phil Spencer mused about how the Xbox One will be able to transcend the usual console cycle of several years through the use of backwards and forward compatibility at a press event in San Francisco last week.
But Microsoft’s ideas go way beyond just that. Spencer says that being able to separate software and hardware platforms from each other will enable the industry to “see more hardware innovation in the console space than we’ve ever seen.”

Outside of last year’s Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, developer The Coalition are still relative newcomers to Microsoft’s first-party franchise. But if there was ever any lingering doubt about the change of guard from Epic Games, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has teased that upcoming sequel Gears of War 4 is making “stunning progress” ahead of its planned launch in 2016.
Microsoft appointed the studio formerly known as Black Tusk at the helm soon after it acquired the IP outright in January of 2014. It did force the creative team to shelve its in-development shooter – codenamed Warfare at the time – and Spencer referenced the canned project when referencing The Coalition’s take on the Gears of War franchise.
Per Twitter:

Specific details regarding the story of Gears of War 4 remain under wraps for now.

Despite its disastrous start, the Xbox One hasn’t really put at foot wrong over the past year. Although the lingering taste of DRM and restrictive sharing practices still taint Microsoft’s console long after those features were stripped, Xbox head Phil Spencer has been knocking it out the park when it comes to announcing brand new exclusives, hardware and system updates.
In fact, the Xbox One of 2016 looks virtually nothing like the machine of 2013 – and that’s left me feeling a bit jealous.

Microsoft’s promise of a cross-gen Xbox One will finally come true this fall and thanks to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, we now know exactly when it will happen.
As it was announced by Spencer during a livestream of Halo 5: Guardians, the company’s “all-in-one” system will add nearly 100 of the Xbox 360’s games to its library this November 12th, roughly six months from its original reveal at E3.
As it was originally explained at Xbox’s E3 press conference, The console’s back-compatibility comes via an online update to go out on the 12th which will allow gamers to play any of their old 360 games currently modified for the update, digital or physical. More games are expected to be made cross-gen throughout the Xbox One’s lifecycle, but in the meantime, you can check out the current list of Microsoft’s first batch of cross-gen games.
The news...
As it was announced by Spencer during a livestream of Halo 5: Guardians, the company’s “all-in-one” system will add nearly 100 of the Xbox 360’s games to its library this November 12th, roughly six months from its original reveal at E3.

We're coming up to two years into the new generation of consoles with both the 360 and PS3 well behind us. Thanks to a botched PR campaign ahead of launch and some clunky decisions that turned the buzz against them toxic, Microsoft started out this generation with their Xbox One lagging behind rival Sony's PlayStation 4.
Microsoft has since worked hard to try and crawl back, making the box more enticing to consumers with price cuts, dropping Kinect and frequent Os updates to improve features. Their efforts however have not proven beneficial as, though Microsoft is not inclined to announce sales figures, VGChartz indicates that just over 25 million PS4s have been sold around the world compared to just under 14 million Xbox Ones.
Xbox team leader Phil Spencer was asked if he think the Xbox One could close that gap at the 2015 GeekWire Summit (via VideoGamer.com). He responded: "You know, I don't know.

In a frank interview at the 2015 Geekwire Summit, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has given the clearest indication yet that he truly doesn’t know whether the Xbox One will ever be able to close the gap between Microsoft’s console and Sony’s PlayStation 4. As it stands, the PS4’s sales figures currently surpass the Xbox One’s by a large margin, and Spencer largely attributes the the gap to the poorly-received launch features of the console that were ultimately scrapped before release.
Spencer said the following when quizzed on the subject:
You know, I don’t know. You know, the length of the generation… They [Sony] have a huge lead and they have a good product. I love the content, the games line-up that we have.
One thing that probably I didn’t realise as much as I should have when I started in this role was the impact that...

To put it mildly, 343 Industries’ much-hyped Halo: The Master Chief Collection missed the mark late last year when it launched on Xbox One to a myriad of technical bugs and game-crashing server issues. It wasn’t a situation that could be rectified overnight, either, with early adopters left faced with a seemingly relentless onslaught of patches and game updates all in an effort to plug the holes of a compilation that essentially release broken.
Did we say something about putting it mildly?
Regardless, 2015 marks a new start for 343 Industries, and though informed consumers are tapering their expectations for Halo 5: Guardians after The Master Chief Collection, Xbox Boss Phil Spencer has assured fans that the sequel won’t fall foul to the mistakes of yesteryear.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has provided his own two cents on the topic of Vr gaming and whether he considers it to be the future of gaming. In a recent interview with Gamespot, Spencer goes into detail about his views on the emerging technology and its potential to become the focus of video games, but his response may not be what you’d expect…
Well, now it’s just my opinion. I’ll say, obviously we have relationships with Valve, we have a relationship with Oculus around the Vr work that they’re doing, but I’m going to say I kind of hope not.
He continues on to clarify that he’s excited to see what kind of experiences Vr can offer gamers, but that he hopes it doesn’t became the primary way in which to play – stating that it goes against his own personal view of how video games should be experienced.

Remedy’s time-bending adventure game Quantum Break will be date for a release on Xbox One this week, according to Xbox Boss Phil Spencer.
Having skipped an appearance at E3 back in June, it’s understood Microsoft will place a heavy emphasis on the upcoming third-person title, along with fellow exclusives such as Crackdown and PlatinumGames’ Scalebound. Fielding questions via Twitter, Spencer didn’t openly confirm that an announcement would be made, though judging by the tone of the Tweet, a release date seems imminent.

Quite simply, Microsoft’s saving of the Xbox One this year has been rather similar to salvaging a sunken wreck of a once great ocean liner, as if the 360 was a once-proud Titanic sailing the commercial seas and taking thousands of passengers along for the ride, the Kinect was the disastrous iceberg that ruptured the hull and sent everything hell-bound, the signs of life thereafter being few and far between.

With E3 now in our collective rear-view mirror, game companies are already dusting themselves off and prepping for the next major event: Gamescom in Cologne. Fresh off its impressive showcase a fortnight ago, Microsoft has confirmed it will host its annual press event on Tuesday, August 4 at the fan-favorite trade show.
Available to watch on a variety of platforms including Xbox One, Xbox 360, Xbox.com and Windows Phone, the conference itself “will show off many of the games coming to Xbox One, including titles like Scalebound, Quantum Break, and Crackdown.” Phil Spencer made reference to this formant trio during Microsoft’s E3 presser, excusing their absence and asking fans to be excited about their appearance at Gamescom. We expect Remedy to nail down a release date for Quantum Break, though it’s seem unlikely that Scalebound and Crackdown will be privy to the same treatment. Time will tell, of course.

Now that the We Got This Covered team has had time to marinate on the biggest and brightest announcements from a memorable E3 event, it’s now time to select our favorite games from the show.
It was by no means easy, particularly when you consider just how many press conferences there were. Bethesda kicked things off on the eve of Day Zero with a lean and mean showcase, toplined by a blood-drenched Doom and a detailed look at the lush world of Fallout 4 – a world that we’ll no doubt be spending umpteen hours in come November.
Barely twenty-four hours had passed when Microsoft took to the stage to bolster its first-party line-up, and the Xbox One has a renewed sense of purpose under the astute leadership of Phil Spencer. Gone are the days when Microsoft was trumpeting the Kinect and the “all-in-one” entertainment system from the rooftops.

It’s that time of the year again. E3. Always interesting, often embarrassing, and frequently disappointing, E3 is one of the most important gaming weekends of the year. People around the globe tune in to conferences led by Microsoft and Sony, as well as select third party publishers, with wide eyes and crossed fingers. For every Kingdom Hearts 3 reveal there’s a half-dozen Call of Duty gameplay demonstrations, usually demonstrating that it looks exactly the same as the last one. Hope they’re going to finally announce that Final Fantasy VII remake? Here’s Final Fantasy Xiii: Lightning Returns. But despite the cynicism one acquires after watching so many of these things, there’s always a few surprises, and there’s always something to get excited about. E3 fever is tough to resist.

Bad news for anyone who was expecting to see more on Crackdown 3 and Scalebound at this year’s E3 – Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said that neither game will be making an appearance as part of their E3 line-up. Don’t sink into despair though, both games are still very much alive, and they’ll be appearing “front and center” at this year’s Gamescom instead.
Speaking in a statement on the official Xbox website, Spencer validated the reasons for such a decision, stating that their E3 conference just didn’t allow enough time for them to show everything.
E3 is just the beginning. Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll be sharing many more of our plans for 2015 and beyond. Having a jam-packed lineup of games to show at E3 means that there simply isn’t enough time to give each of our upcoming titles its well-deserved time in the spotlight.

The Oculus Vr headset will release the "first quarter of 2016" and so far has no official price point for consumer models. The consumer package will include an external sensor for tracking, the headset, and a wireless Xbox One controller and adapter.
There has also been some slight improvements to the unit as well. The creators revealed that the headset now has a slider built in to adjust the lenses to the various lengths of peoples eyes. They noted that while this sounds minor, it is actually a massive improvement to the immersion the headset provides.
They also explained that the headphones on the headset can be removed and replaced. This is good news for those that really love their high quality audio and are picky about their speakers.

Only a few months ago, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer claimed that E3 2015 would herald one of the company’s biggest showcases to date, though it seems one such announcement has slipped out ahead of time. In a surprising twist of events, it was Microsoft’s Xbox Support website that proved to be the company’s own undoing – more often than not, Reddit and NeoGaf are responsible for untimely leaks – which revealed that a new Xbox One controller replete with a 3.5mm port is on the brink of announcement.
Though the post has since been taken down from the support forum, it did specify that the new-fangled headphone port located at the base of the pad – much like the DualShock 4 – will only be featured in controllers after June, essentially confirming its place among Microsoft’s E3 plans. When contacted for an official statement on the matter, the hardware giant remained mum,...

Now that Remedy has all hands at the pump for time-bending Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break, hope of the studio cranking out an Alan Wake 2 has largely fizzled out since the release of the original survivor horror title in 2010. Half a decade later and the studio has finally provided some never-before-seen details relating to the sequel, including gameplay footage and detailing the reasons why the follow-up never hit the ground running despite the success of its forbearer.
During an extensive interview with Polygon, Creative Director Sam Lake recounted the studio’s initial plans for an Alan Wake 2 and how Remedy wanted to push ahead with a direct sequel shortly after the original 2010 release.
“For Alan Wake, from the get-go, we assumed there was going to be a sequel and we mapped things further out when it came to character, story, details and focus changes,” Lake explained. “We knew we would have to iterate and refine,...

With just under two months until the main event, Microsoft has begun teasing what fans can expect from the publisher during its showing at E3 2015 in June. Specifically, that early buzz is being generated by Head of Xbox Phil Spencer, who took to Twitter to answer a handful of fan questions about all things Microsoft. It was there that the executive revealed that the company has an all-new, exclusive IP waiting in the wings.
Here’s what Spencer had to share through his official feed:
@Masih3KA We should have new exclusive IP at E3. I’m trying to make this E3 more about 1st party than past E3s.
— Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) April 19, 2015
@thekeenpaladin This is going to be a fun year. I think it might be our best 1st party content year ever.

Whether it’s Valve, Sony, Oculus, or Samsung pushing ahead with the Gear, you don’t have to cast your eyes too far to find the burgeoning market for virtual reality in the video game industry. All of these companies are easing closer to consumer-ready models, and though Microsoft has been working on augmented reality via the HoloLens, the company’s Xbox Boss Phil Spencer touched upon the tech itself, and why he believes Vr isn’t quite a “now” thing.
In the latest issue of Edge magazine, Spencer addressed Microsoft’s approach to the technology, along with competition in the field – specifically, Sony’s Project Morpheus headset.
It’s more of an announcement than anybody really having any Vr stuff right now – and that’s not a shot at Sony. I mean, it’s hard tech, and I think it’s great what they’re doing with Morpheus. But...

Shortly after the general rollout of the console’s April update, Xbox One users have already turned their attention to the new bells and whistles that will be making their way to the system during the month of May and beyond. Specifically, what these changes will bring to the Windows-styled user interface.
As a matter of fact, Microsoft has revealed that speeding up the Xbox One’s Ui remains a high priority for the company and that users should expect to see incremental tweaks to the menus and various social functions over the coming months. That’s according to Xbox Boss Phil Spencer, who revealed the following via Twitter
@thekeenpaladin Preview is going to get interesting in the next few months. The members do a great job with the Quests etc, we’ll need it.

Quantum Break is delayed until 2016, and unlike other delays they are upfront about the excuse.
Quantum Break was set to release in the Fall of this year, but Xbox boss Phil Spencer stated before that they have so many games releasing they were not sure if all would actually release. Well it seem Quantum Break is the game that got the move.
According to Xbox the delay is simply due to the crowded lineup of titles releasing at the same time. “With so many games launching this year, moving Quantum Break to 2016 extends our incredible portfolio into next year with a monster new IP,"Shannon Loftis stated.
She also mentioned that their lineup includes Halo 5, Tomb Raider, Fable Legends, and Forza Motorsports 6 with "more titles to be announced in the coming months." Thus they want a game like Quantum Break to extend this to next year.
