There’s not much surprise that this song hit number one on the top one hundred in 1986. The track was one of their absolute best and most popular to date and it’s been used in wide variety of ways. Something about simply grips people and keeps their attention in a way that’s really hard to define but extremely easy to see. It’s enjoyed a broad spectrum of usage since it was released and still is heard to this day on the radio, in TV, movies, and yes, even video games from time to time. Here are some of the best

The ‘80s are alive on Netflix’s “Glow” – and that means more than just the pulling of large AquaNet hair.
Besides plenty of evidence of the decade in the ring with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, “Glow” also features ass-kickery set to the totally ‘80s soundtrack from Patti Labelle, Journey, Tears for Fears and others. For viewers who grew up with these artists on cassette, the series has been a heart-pumping aural trip down memory lane.

There’s one song in particular that will appeal to a very specific set of ‘80s music and film fans: Stan Bush’s “Dare.” In Episode 7, the track is first heard in a montage as Ruth (Alison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin) decide to get additional instruction on their wrestling moves before their big match.

15 years ago today, Elle Woods taught us to bend and snap. Legally Blonde hit theaters on July 13, 2001, giving Reese Witherspoon her breakout role and giving us a movie that put a pink-loving sorority girl in the place where she’s the outcast: law school. Until she proves all her doubters wrong, that is, in the midst of a murder trial, no less. The comedy’s success led to a 2003 sequel and a stage musical that premiered on Broadway in 2007. Other notable July 13 happenings in pop culture history: • 1923: The Hollywood sign, which then read “Hollywoodland,” was officially dedicated. • 1939: Frank Sinatra made his recording debut in a New York studio, singing “From The Bottom Of My Heart” and “Melancholy Mood” with the Harry James Band. • 1964: The Supremes recorded “Come See About Me” in “Hitsville U.S.A.,” Motown’s first headquarters. • 1984: The Muppets Take Manhattan and The Last Starfighter opened in theaters.

The Hunger Games are back on very soon, and they’ve taken their soundtrack game into a new arena of sorts.
Prior to the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire last November, this column outlined how the tween blockbuster has been quietly revolutionizing the soundtrack game in recent years. Franchises like The Hunger Games and Twilight have been marketing their soundtracks to the more musical savvy end of their audience and even pulling in slightly older music fans with some interesting indie acts alongside unreleased tracks and brand new cover versions.
Now, with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 set to hit cinemas next week, the franchise has handed the reins over to Lorde.

Gregg Araki's unique coming-of-age story "White Bird in a Blizzard" already has his distinctive imprint on it, but the film's dreamlike atmosphere is aided by the music department. A couple of months back, we brought you a preview of Cocteau Twins member Robin Guthrie and avant pianist Harold Budd's score for the film, and today, we're taking a look at the songs that power the official soundtrack. Featuring, of course, Cocteau Twins, along with New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and Tears For Fears, the song choices mark out the very specific sound Araki uses to tell his tale. The inclusion of The Jesus And Mary Chain gives things a bit of an edge, while selections by Everything But The Girl brings the music toward the '90s, and Ulrich Schnauss pulls the soundtrack into the new millennium. It's clearly a soundtrack selected and programmed with care,...

All Hallow's Eve. Fright Night! The Americanisation of British culture continues apace with yet another Halloween special on The X Factor.
As ever, our friends at ITV have published the list of songs to be performed, as well as the artist who performed the version being covered.
Halloween classics 'Bat Out of Hell' and 'Thriller' are of course present and correct. 'Highway To Hell' is also suitably screamy.
'Relight My Fire' is the Take That/Lulu version rather than the Dan Hartman disco classic. We think it's allowed because Hell is fiery and that.
'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)' gets in because of its spooky video, rather than the song itself.
Similarly, we're guessing 'Mad World' gets a pass because of Gary Jules's dark reworking for Richard Kelly's 2001 classic Donnie Darko, but Jay James will apparently be doing the bouncy Tears For Fears original.

“Whatever happened to Fun?” rages Kristen Johnston’s Lexi Featherston in one of the most shocking (and hilarious) scenes in the history of Sex and the City.

Singer/songwriter Lorde is no stranger to The Hunger Games, having contributed the fantastic cover of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" (used to great effect in the Dracula Untold trailers) to the Catching Fire soundtrack. Now, she's back to make a big impression on the Mockingjay Part 1, curating the soundtrack, as well as providing the first single, "Yellow Flicker Beat", which is embedded below for your listening pleasure. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 hits the big screen on November 21st.

At a recent concert in Philadelphia, Lorde unveiled another Kanye song from her cover repertoire (which includes Tears for Fears, Nirvana, and Sheryl Crow). This time, it was "Flashing Lights" from Kanye's Graduation album, which, in case you want to feel a certain way, came out when Lorde was 10.The Kiwi singer also covered the Bon Iver song from that Zach Braff movie, adding fuel to the fire of those Lorde Truther rumors.

Lorde has been working with Paul Epworth to record her Hunger Games: Mockingjay track.
Billboard reports that the London producer flew out to Lakehouse Recording Studios in New Jersey for a two-day session with the 17-year-old.
The Grammy-winning producer uploaded a picture of the pair to Instagram with the caption: "Fun few days hanging out with this lovely lady and the crew from @lakehousestudios Asbury NJ."
Meanwhile, Matt Wiggins broke from a recording session with U2 to engineer the track along with Eric Romero.
The track will play out over the closing credits of the film when it arrives in cinemas this November. The soundtrack will be released three days before the film arrives in theatres.

Even if the movies themselves are nothing special, Ya adaptations always seem to have the best soundtracks. The best part of every Twilight film was looking at the accompanying albums to uncover some real gems (artists included The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Muse, The Bravery, Sia and St. Vincent, to name a few of many), while the Divergent soundtrack offered some great Ellie Goulding tracks.
The Hunger Games franchise, too, has been pretty stellar in terms of its musical stylings to date. The first film featured a rocking Kid Cudi song called “The Ruler and the Killer” in addition to some Arcade Fire and Taylor Swift, while Catching Fire incorporated Coldplay and The National for a more epic feel. Now, we’re hearing that the featured artist on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack will be none other than “Royals” breakout Lorde.

Here's a good idea: Lorde is curating The Hunger Games: Mockingjay soundtrack. (She's also written the soundtrack's first single.) To prove that she's the perfect teen for the job, she wrote about the entire thing on her Tumblr: "... to be at the helm of a project like this is easily the most responsibility i’ve ever had, and to me, that says something kind of amazing about the way the world is changing - a globally successful film franchise is allowing a teenager to run their shit. we are opening doors, we are moving walls. this makes me so insanely happy." One of the highlights of last year's pretty amazing "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" soundtrack album was teenage wunderkind Lorde's appropriately gloomy cover of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." (A cover, so good, it should be noted, that it's already having other movie trailers built around it -- hi, "Dracula Untold!") Well, it seems that the team behind the Jennifer Lawrence-led series was very happy with Lorde and has hired the young singer songwriter to "curate" the next soundtrack, for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," according to Billboard.
"I sat down with Lorde on the set of 'Mockingjay' this spring and I was immediately struck by how she so innately understood what we, as both fans and filmmakers, were trying to accomplish with the film," director Francis Lawrence said in a cheerily prepared statement. It’s hip to be square yet again, it seems. The London-premiered musical version of American Psycho—famously a Bret Easton Ellis novel, then a cult classic 2000 film with Christian Bale—will get a stateside production this spring at Off Broadway’s Second Stage Theatre.
The musical—which alternates new, electronic-fused tunes by Tony-winning composer Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) along with the film’s cheeky use of 1980s tunes by Phil Collins, Human League, Tears For Fears, and the aforementioned Huey Lewis & The News, among others—received much acclaim in its 2013 premiere on the West End. After assembling an eclectic set of artists for the soundtrack to last year's The Hunger Games, Republic and Mercury have attracted an even more impressive array of acts to get you in the mood for sequel Catching Fire. Just as Jennifer Lawrence's star-wattage has increased since her debut outing as Katniss Everdeen, this tie-in album - comprised of songs inspired by Suzanne Collins's dystopian tale - packs more A-list punch with the likes of Coldplay and Christina Aguilera bringing new songs to the table.
Like most film soundtracks, Catching Fire is a mixed bag designed to cater to a wide range of tastes. Welcome to an album where Christian Aguilera follows indie rockers The National and rock 'n' roll icon Patti Smith is sandwiched between Ellie Goulding and Santigold!
Coldplay kick off proceedings with 'Atlas', a soaring anthem that the band are able to produce in their sleep.

In the episode, Shawn (actor James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) try to solve a murder at a party hosted by an old rock star in a California mansion. There are five suspects: the groupie, the manager, the author, the host and, of course, the butler. During the show, the suspects are narrowed down to three and viewers are asked to vote on social media who they thought committed the crime. Three endings were filmed, each lasting three minutes, and the top vote-getter will be used.

It's been over three decades since Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith came together to form one of the greatest synth pop alliances we've ever known: Tears for Fears. Today that band, credited with new wave masterpieces like "Mad World" and "Change," is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their first record, "The Hurting."
That's right, your favorite concept album dedicated to personal suffering and primal scream therapy is turning 30.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, there are several things you could do. First, we recommend listening the 10-song LP while reminiscing about other significant events that took place in 1983 -- like the first flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger or the release of "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi." Then you should probably follow up that listening party with the rest of the British band's discography, because who doesn't want to spend another hour humming along to "Songs From the Big Chair?...

Meet Ijameswalters. A week ago he achieved internet virality through his rendition of the song "I Dreamed A Dream" when he voiced the entire song as the Lord of The Rings character Gollum/Smeagol. This week he released another video of him using the same voice to work through his own take of Gary Jules' rendition of "Mad World". For those of you who are only familiar with the Tears For Fears version you need to get it together and watch Donnie Darko, as this version is only second to the Jules cover. Bonus points for the overdressed guy on piano.

It’s that time again Psych-Os. The seventh season of Psych kicks off tonight with the conclusion of last season’s cliffhanger. If there was any doubt about where we were headed last season, yes, Henry is in a very bad way, and the result leads to a very new perspective for Shawn.
While a lot of shows on cable networks, even some of the best, seem to struggle if they make past a handful of seasons, Psych is still going strong. Not simply, “as funny as ever,” but actually continuing to develop and grow, it’s pushing itself to new heights. The continuation of “Santa BarbaraTown” (or however they expect that to be written) is just the beginning. The season will also feature a 100th-episode spectacular that includes a reunion of some of the cast of Clue, and we will be seeing “Psych: The Musical.”

An enthusiastic crowd was treated to a special performance by glam rocker Adam Lambert and '80s icon Cyndi Lauper on Saturday night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City when they teamed up on Tears for Fears' haunting "Mad World."
Lambert, who will emcee the 2012 Vhi Divas concert this Sunday, was a part of a celebrity-studded event for the second annual "Cyndi Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays", which raises awareness on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth homelessness and supports the True Colors Fund's Forty to None Project.
Before taking the stage with his friend Lambert, who gave a memorable performance of "Mad World" when he was on "American Idol," gushed to the crowd, "I can’t believe she asked me to do this! This is amazing.”

A word about Adele's "Skyfall," the theme of the upcoming same-named James Bond film starring Daniel Craig in his third turn as 007: Eh? The institution of the Bond theme is built on gorgeously overwrought music and ballistic emotions, and "Skyfall" feels like a drippy, austere tune with a so-so conclusion.
The best Bond themes combine five key elements: melodrama, a compelling vocal, classic James Bond appeal, a touch of the insane, and a palpable sexiness. Based on those criteria, "Skyfall" wouldn't even make a top 10 list of Bond anthems. But what would? I count down James Bond's 10 best musical triumphs (songs only, no scores) below.
10. Chris Cornell, "You Know My Name"
Melodrama: 6
Compelling Vocal: 7
Classic Bond Appeal: 8
A Touch of the Insane: 5
Sexiness: 7
Total: 33
By 2006, it'd been years since we'd heard a definitive "rock" Bond anthem, so Chris Cornell's sinister track felt like the freshest possible fit...

Poor Blaine. With Kurt living his Rent-esque dream in NYC, the other half of TV's greatest gay supercouple needs to find something to occupy himself til he and Kurt can avoid kissing again. Luckily, he may have found his calling in this week's episode.
"Looking to fill up his suddenly endless free time now that boyfriend Kurt (Chris Colfer) has set up shop in New York, Blaine will challenge the incumbent Brittany (Heather Morris) in a race for student body president in which he'll cover the 1986 hit during the episode, titled "Makeover."
The "1986" hit they're referring to is the Tears For Fears classic "Everybody Wants To Rule The World," which is actually a 1985 hit (it hit #1 in June '85), but I'm trying not to let that glaring error bother me. It's easy to do when Darren Criss does such a typically fine job. Take a listen!

I didn’t go to Reading, or Leeds, this year. I haven’t woken this morning in a field. No, I’ve woken this morning surrounded by empty cans wearing pyjama bottoms and a Converge T Shirt. Most painful of all about my not having gone to Reading, or Leeds, most heartachingly painful of all, is that I didn’t see The Cure play a majestic three hour set.
Watching them from the comfort of my bed, attired in the aforementioned, on BBC iPlayer is not the same. Hangover breakfast of champions or not; gammon steak and scrambled egg (I like protein) splashed with mustard and red sauce. Chased of course with a coffee and a cigarette.
However, by way of compensation I have been gifted with something this week. That something is Wild Nothing’s sophomore effort Nocturne. How this is compensation will be made clear soon.

It's not often in our lives that our younger selves get to become magically older, like Tom Hanks did in Big or even receive the chance to revert from middle-age back to a teenager. And while Matthew Perry doesn't turn into Zac Efron here, Perception takes an interesting, albeit far-fetched, spin on the concept of time and being 17 again in this week's episode, "86'd."
Once again, Agent Kate Moretti's been stumped by her current FBI case and she eagerly seeks Dr. Daniel Pierce's astute and brilliant mind to solve the cold case that's been re-opened. I'm surprised he's not getting paid for his consults, but I'm sure that solving complex crimes is more than enough of a payoff for him.
Luckily the clues of the 1986 "Date Night" killer are in open sight, ranging from a leftover journal to a print that matches the old murders to the one victim that escaped with her life.

Dizzee Rascal will reportedly re-release his England football song 'Shout' tomorrow (June 23). The rapper is said to have recorded new lyrics to the track for a rush release in time for England's quarter final against Italy in Euro 2012 on Sunday, reports The Sun. The track was organised by Simon Cowell in 2010 for the World Cup in South Africa. Also featuring James Corden, and sampling 'Shout' by Tears For Fears and Blackstreet's 'No Diggity', the song reached number (more)...

What more is there to say, fellow Voice voyeurs? We've cartwheeled through what seems like 16,930 weeks of brackets, faceoffs, and duets, and now we're down to the final four combatants in the big, red-chaired conclusion of The Voice. I suggest we celebrate by donning our most ironic t-shirts (Hell, I'll wear a glittery "Team Xtina" baby tee too, Adam! Particularly if we're wearing it at the same time!) and correctly the ranking last night's performances. As usual, we'll start low and work our way to #1. Will the winner of The Voice be justified? Not if the sepia-toned catalog of Josh Groban has anything to do with it!
4. Chris Mann: "The Voice Within," "You Raise Me Up," "The Prayer" (with Christina Aguilera)
Would you hate me if I revealed a soupcon of conscience?...

I've sailed through the eleventh season of American Idol and the second season of The Voice like a damn trooper. I've skewered them both for your entertainment. But now the time has come to pick the better show, and I'm using seven categories of criteria to reach a verdict. Idol is better in some regards while The Voice wins in others, but the overall results are in! Dim the lights and let's crown one singing competition king. We'll start the showdown with my favorite category: hosting.
1. Hosting: Carson Daly vs. Ryan Seacrest
Is there a reason why the hosts on talent competitions aren't discussed more? Frankly, they're the most critical element of the proceedings. Both The Voice and American Idol are uncontrolled blitzes of power ballads, lighting cues, and talky interludes, and it takes the finesse of a killer emcee to rein it all in. And if we're being honest,...

Britons famous, once famous and perhaps to be famous again are beating the drum for the UK in Hollywood this week
For once, there was no shame in being on the B-list: they came from all corners of Hollywood – peaks of fame, foothills of recognition and valleys of the forgotten – to celebrate Britishness.
A female bagpiper in an electric-blue miniskirt summoned the disparate tribe of dames, geezers, toffs and other transplanted Brits to proclaim their success, or mere survival, at a red-carpet gala in west Hollywood on Tuesday night.
It was the launch of BritWeek, an annual series of events co-founded six years ago by Nigel Lythgoe, the Wirral-born producer of American Idol, Pop Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.
"The Brits that weren't very good at what they did went home and complained about how horrible everything was in Los Angeles," said Lythgoe, working his way up the carpet.

Alright, you hopefully read our Tribeca Film Festival review of Nicholas Stoller's "The Five Year Engagement" this morning. We hear that It's a sweet and funny comedy that veers off in tangents, but fortunately, it never loses its way.
Hot on its heels comes the info of the accompanying soundtrack Ep, a brief five-song set with some interesting and comical connections. For music-heads that like their swooning, bittersweet and soulful pop songs comes the reveal of a few Van Morrison songs: "Crazy Love," performed by Audra Mae, another cover of "Into The Mystic" done by The Swell Season (the musical duo from the film "Once") and "When The Evening Sun Goes Down" by Brett Dennen. We hear there's a least one actual Van Morrison song featured in the film as well.
Rather hilariously (and this writer assumes this is a minor comedic spoiler so watch out), the opening track...

The second week of live performances on "The Voice" (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Et on NBC) wasn't exactly riveting, but, as Carson Daly states at the start of the episode, we can count on Cee Lo "arguably one of the best performers in the world" to jazz things up.
And he does, putting stilts, light-up masks and shirtless Egyptians in his team's performances. Also, Purrfect reemerged, happily disproving our theory that she was used to make Cee Lo's wig last week.
Too dark for you? Just wait for Christina Aguilera to tear into Tony Lucca and for Tony Vincent's performance.

Put on your acid wash jeans and your spandex because this week, the American Idol Top 8 take on hits from the 1980s. It should be a great week for people like me, who love the '80s. So many great choices! I'll be so disappointed if no one sings a song by Hall and Oates. But there are only 8 solo performances, so I should probably prepare myself for disappointment. I hope they won't try to throw duets or trios at us again--save that mess for the results show!
But, according to recent spoilers, they are singing duets and I'll have to settle for The Pointer Sisters instead of Hall and Oates. And no one is singing any Tears for Fears? I'm flabbergasted. A wasted opportunity, Top 8! At least someone is singing "Flashdance ... What a Feeling."...

His debut live performance of the single on January 17, 2012 on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno received overwhelmingly positive reviews, focusing on Lambert’s soaring and impeccable vocals on this melodically challenging song, as well as his more stripped down and sophisticated look.

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 2, Episode 22 of ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars," entitled "Father Knows Best."
"Pretty Little Liars" picks up almost exactly where the last one took off with the police having talked to Emily. She finds out that Maya's parents said she left a note and seemingly packed a bag. Em knows she ran away because "she said she'd run away before she'd ever go back to boot camp," which was inevitable since her girlfriend and parents caught her with weed. Also, nice Nancy Drewing, Emily. Hanna assures her Maya will call, but Emily just turns off the lights and is clearly as worried as she is angry. She sits there in the dark, which is where pretty much everyone is in this episode.
"I really hope this whole episode isn't sooo dark that you can barely see anything," my mom says.

It's Father-Daughter dance time at Rosewood for the "Pretty Little Liars" - this school sure does have a lot of dances, doesn't it?
Emily's dad is in town being awesome and helping her look for Maya. But he also drops the bomb that he's going back to Afghanistan. Poor Emily. If they kill him off, that would be really crappy.
Speaking of crappy, Byron is still being a big jerk and Ella doesn't think she can quite broach anything with him yet. Though it's pretty heartbreaking the way he stands there after Aria tells him she's not his little girl anymore.
Aria leaves him there because she goes to tell Ashley Marin that she sent the police report to Hanna, which Ashley doesn't believe for a second because she's way smarter than all nitwit girls put together. And Ashley and Ella get together to compare notes about "A." Those two...

Kimbra's crooning vocals and eclectic rhythms bridge the gap between funk and Bjork, and spill from speakers like heated, bubbling honey. Quickly mellifluous with quick pops of sound. Her music is not only pleasant to the ear, but it's just all around fun to listen to. The Kiwi's album Vows debuted last September and she recently collaborated with Gotye on his track "Somebody That I Used to Know" off his album Making Mirrors that came out on January 31st. Her music is well worth seeking out, and to help get you hooked, we've included the music video for her hit "Settle Down", "Cameo Lover", as well as a radio recording session of Kimbra's mash-up of Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks" and Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels", and finally the music video for her collaboration with Gotye "Somebody That I Used to Know".

The Christmas number one: a supposedly hallowed achievement, and yet both Mr Blobby and Bob The Builder have both walked away with it in the past. In recent years, the market immediately before Christmas has been over-populated by the deluge of “talented” winners from Simon Cowell’s pop processing plant on the moon (probably) and vocal dissenters seem to have turned the Christmas Number One into some sort of insipid personification of everything that is wrong with the music business.
But, there have been some shining lights in the history of the Christmas Number One, despite the infamous ear-bleeders and the outrageous stories of classic songs being overtaken for the accolade by awful one-hit-wonders. And this article is hereby devoted to listing said highlights.
