A wildly melodramatic (yet weirdly endearing) love story for and about a generation of young Americans who first have to survive their own government if they hope to spend the rest of their lives with someone else, “Purple Hearts” may unfold like a ludicrous mash-up between “The Oc” and “A Star Is Born” — this super-cheap Netflix Original is so determined to satisfy the algorithm that it would lack any coherent sense of self if not for the fact that it was chiefly designed as a star vehicle for Disney Channel grad Sofia Carson — but there’s something rather stubbornly honest about the heartbeat of desperation that thrums below its Walmart veneer.
; that “Purple Hearts” is able to pull that off for at least the first half of its overstuffed two-hour running time is all the more impressive because the whole thing is shot with the reality and panache of a prescription drug commercial.

"I love the way you look at him – just, so, real." Is it, though?? Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a very cheesy romance titled Purple Hearts, which plays as a jingoistic love story about a marine and his wife. In spite of their many differences, Cassie, a struggling singer-songwriter, and Luke, a troubled marine, agree to marry solely for the military benefits (mainly the health insurance?). But when tragedy strikes, the line between real and pretend begins to blur. And they must attempt to see if they really do love each other or not. The film stars Sofia Carson as Cassie and Nicholas Galitzine as Luke, with Chosen Jacobs, Kat Cunning, Linden Ashby, Anthony Ippolito, John Harlan Kim, Sarah Rich, & Scott Deckert. This looks as bad as the Hallmark movies that we get every year, with some seriously sappy romance with nothing unique or compelling about the story either.

It turns out Al Pacino is a Timothée Chalamet stan. The Oscar-winning actor enthusiastically said that Chalamet should be the one to play a younger version of himself should a sequel to “Heat” ever make it to the big screen.
Pacino was asked the question by moderator Bilge Ebiri at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, where fans were treated to a 4K restoration of Michael Mann’s incredible 1995 crime thriller, but also were given an advanced copy of the book “Heat 2.” Mann co-wrote the book himself with Meg Gardiner, and it hits shelves in August.
Given the new source material, which is both a sequel and a prequel to “Heat,” many have wondered who should play Pacino’s Lt. Vincent Hanna and Robert De Niro’s Neil McCauley should a film adaptation come to fruition. Don’t be surprised that De Niro didn’t have much of an answer,...

Juno Temple has been on a roll for the past year. Last June, she was cast as Bettye McCart, an assistant to producer Al Ruddy, on the Paramount+ limited series “The Offer,” about the making of “The Godfather.” In July, Temple received her first Emmy Award nomination for playing Keely on the hit series “Ted Lasso.” Later that same month, Temple won further raves for her performance on Season 2 of the Apple TV+ comedy, which has her back in the Emmy conversation once again.
“I’m just stoked that it has opened doors for certain people that hadn’t been opened before – me included,” Temple tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “I’m not sure ‘The Offer’ would have come into my world [without ‘Ted Lasso’]. That was something that I remember getting the phone call being offered ‘The Offer,’ and I was like, ‘What do you mean? Oh my God.

Regarded as one of the best films of all time, “The Godfather” was released in 1972. The film was adapted from Mario Puzo’s best-selling 1969 novel and is set in the 1940s, following the Mafia family the Corelones in New York.
Marlon Brando played The Godfather himself, Don Vito Corleone, who passes down his gangster ties to his sons Sonny (James Caan) and Michael (Al Pacino). Michael has distanced himself from the involvement of his family in crime, but he comes back into the fold after violence claims his Sicilian wife, and he returns home to marry Kay (Diane Keaton) a non-Italian.
The film won the Oscars for Best Picture, Actor (Brando) and Adapted Screenplay and gave birth to one of the best sequels ever made. And now, the story behind the story is being told.

A new star-studded TV series about the making of “The Godfather” arrives on Paramount Plus this week.
Set in the early 1970s, “The Offer” follows the notoriously rocky production process that Paramount Pictures went through while adapting Mario Puzo’s best-selling novel for the screen. At the center of the series is producer Albert Ruddy, played by Miles Teller, and his quixotic effort to create the Mafia family drama amidst tension between himself and director Francis Ford Coppola, and the infamous tale of how mob boss Joe Colombo signed on to help with the production.
All of the key players in the real-life “Godfather” saga appear in the film: Coppola (Dan Fogler), then-Paramount chief Robert Evans (Matthew Goode) and stars Marlon Brando (Justin Chambers) and Al Pacino (Anthony Ippolito...

Honoring one of the greatest films ever made presents a monumentally tall task to any actor. The stars of the new Paramount+ series reflected on what “The Godfather” means to them in light of their new roles in “The Offer.”
“I think, more than anything else, it’s a nice reminder for us actors and creative types that even on one of the greatest movies ever made, it almost fell apart,” Colin Hanks told Variety at the Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday night. “It could’ve fallen apart at any moment. And so, it sort of gives you a little bit of wind in your sails to keep going, no matter what happens.”
“The Offer” follows the highly tumultuous behind-the-scenes story of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 classic through the eyes of producer Albert S. Ruddy, played by Miles Teller. Hanks plays Barry Lapidus, a stern Gulf & Western executive who was against making “The Godfather.

It only takes nine episodes for Netflix's Grand Army to completely hook you, but once it's over, you'll be hungry for more. The drama, which premiered on the streaming site on Oct. 16, follows a group of New York City teenagers who attend the highly competitive public high school in Brooklyn known as Grand Army. The first season tackles systemic racism, sexual assault, international adoption, sexuality, feminism, and more as the students fight to succeed, survive, and control their future in an ever-changing world.
Loosely based on Slut: The Play, written by showrunner and theater educator Katie Cappiello, Grand Army is reminiscent of shows like Euphoria and Degrassi, delving deep into the world of the new generation and all the ways they can hurt themselves and each other as they try to make sense of the world around them. In the final episodes of the season, we witness students stage a sit-in against in-school racism,...

Move over Skins and Euphoria, Netflix’s Grand Army is joining the gritty (and hopefully not too realistic) high school show bandwagon.
Netflix has unveiled a release date and first trailer for Grand Army, an adult drama about a New York high school from playwright Katie Cappiello. Grand Army will premiere all nine of its hour-long episodes on October 16 on Netflix. Here is the aforementioned, decidedly gritty, trailer.
Oh yes, there is some Skins DNA in that bad boy. A mournful saxophone rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner over images of a dingy New York high school is what one might call a dramatic layup. But darn it all if it doesn’t work. Social issues highlighted here are of a much darker Degrassi variety, including kneeling for the anthem, rampant uncontrollable teenage sexuality, and perhaps even a school shooting or another similar crisis.
Netflix’s synopsis for the series reads:...

Adam Sandler imagines himself as the savior of the planet. And then it gets even more puffed up with arrogance and all manner of masturbatory fantasy. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): despise Adam Sandler
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I was prepared for “Adam Sandler saves the world, not despite the fact but because of the fact that he is a good-for-nothing slacker whose primary talent is excellence at videogames, and even at that he peaked in middle school more than 30 years ago.” I was prepared because Pixels has been gleeful in its promotion that this is what it is about, and also because — as I have noted before — there is nothing that men cannot do, or fail to do, that Hollywood will not find a way to depict as heroic. This goes triple for Adam Sandler (Men, Women & Children,...

Pixels is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The movie starts out with thirteen-year-old Brenner (Anthony Ippolito) and his friend Cooper (Jared Riley) who like to play arcade video games. They decide to enter Brenner in an arcade gaming competition because he is great at them. When Brenner loses to his arch nemesis, Fire Blaster (Andrew Bambridge), and is devastated. The movie then jumps to when the kids are grownup and they find out that aliens are coming to destroy them with real life versions of the video games they used to play. Brenner’s gaming knowledge finally pays off because now he needs it to save the world. Will he fail or will he succeed?
The 3D was amazing. I am not a fan of every movie coming out these days being made in 3D. However, they made Pixels come to life by adding 3D. I...
