Johnny Flynn was murdered within a week of stepping onto the set of Ripley.
The British actor plays Dickie Greenleaf in the eight-episode Netflix adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley and while he knew the character would meet an untimely demise in the story, he wasn’t prepared for it to be within days of meeting Andrew Scott, who plays the title character.
“I was just getting to know Andrew and there he is bludgeoning me and cradling my dead body,” Flynn tells Rolling Stone. “It was a good icebreaker.

David Bowie has a stage show featuring his music called Lazarus. However, the musical was almost very different from its final form. Reportedly, it was almost a tribute to Bob Dylan as David Bowie wanted the music to consist of fake songs written by the “Blowin’ in the Wind” singer.

Lazarus is a jukebox musical featuring David Bowie’s music. The show is a spiritual sequel to the movie The Man Who Fell to Earth, which starred Bowie. The musical continues the story of Thomas Newton, a humanoid alien stuck on Earth. Lazarus premiered off-Broadway in 2015, a few months before Bowie’s death.
During the making of Lazarus, Bowie had a different idea than using his music. In an interview with GQ, novelist Michael Cunningham shared what Bowie originally envisioned for the show.

Zoe Saldaña took her three kids to the City of Love. In a series of Instagram Stories posted on June 7, the 44-year-old actor shared a rare glimpse of her sons - twins Cy and Bowie, 8, and Zen, 6 - on a family vacation in Paris. Along with her husband, producer and director Marco Perego Saldaña, the group toured the city, taking a photo on the steps of the famous Sacré-Coeur Basilica. "A day to explore . . ." Saldaña wrote next to another snap of her holding her sons' hands as they walked down the street.
As the day continued, Saldaña also her kids looking at a mural reading "Love!" and listening to music from a violinist playing on the sidewalk. They then headed into a pink maisonette restaurant called La Maison Rose and kept the good energy going with another live performance, this time of a musician holding an accordion and a little black cat.

Cult indie icons Deeper have announced their new album Careful!, out September 8th, with its lead single “Build a Bridge” streaming now. Along with the news, the band have revealed their 2023 tour dates.
Careful! marks Deeper’s third album overall and their debut for Sub Pop: “I wanted these to be interesting songs, but in a way where a two-year-old would vibe out to it,” the band’s Nic Gohl said in a statement, naming “coked-out Bowie” as a major influence. “It’s pop music, basically… We’ve always talked about how we didn’t want to stay in one genre as a band.”
Pop melodies drive “Build a Bridge,” but they’re undercut with Deeper’s classic pointed, jittery guitars that make the track at once catchy and a little unnerving. Its lyrics reckon with finding — while, perhaps, also losing — yourself: “A troubled life/ I saw the mirror/ Is this really what you need?...

Editor’s note: The following interviews were done outside of the FYC event series, as there was no panel or screening.
When director Brett Morgen invited Oscar winners Paul Massey and Nina Hartstone to collaborate on the sound for Moonage Daydream, he told them what he was aiming for with his David Bowie documentary.
“He wanted this to be incredibly immersive,” Massey explained as part of Deadline’s FYC House + HBO Max event series, “and not just immersive in an Atmos kind of a way with using objects in the room, but immersive for the audience to the point where they could shut their eyes and be on a rollercoaster ride of audio without even watching some of the [visuals].”

For re-recording mixer Massey, that meant taking a fresh approach to the Bowie songs in the film.

It is fitting to find Fanny: The Right to Rock broadcast on PBS. The channel thrives on educational material, and director Bobbi Jo Hart’s documentary teaches many lessons. The film chronicles the career, and captures the reunion of Fanny, a group of musicians who changed the dynamics of rock in the 1970s. The lineup was unique, labels and management executives dubbed them the “female Beatles.” They made history as the first all-women rock band to release an LP with a major record label.
Originally called The Svelts and rebranded as Wild Honey, Fanny was formed in the mid-1960s in Sacramento, Calif., by three Filipina American musicians: sisters June and Jean Millington, on guitar and bass, and drummer Brie Darling. All three sang. When Darling had her daughter, Brandi, in 1968, Fanny added drummer Alice de Buhr, and roving keyboardist Nickey Barclay.
As was the fashion of the time, they lived in a band house.

Louis Leterrier's new film "Fast X," the eleventh film in the "Fast and Furious" saga, may not have been spoiled yet for you, dear reader. Although you may have heard that the film features at least one -- possibly more -- cameo from known "Furious" characters, there's actually an appearance from someone you likely aren't expecting at all.

Keith Richards and Mick Jagger have been working together in The Rolling Stones since the early 1960s. In this time, they’ve become like family to one another. They’ve also gotten into disagreements, and sometimes very public ones. Despite this, Richards thinks highly of Jagger as a musician. He once expressed his confusion about why his longtime bandmate would want to be like David Bowie.

It’s fitting that James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” wraps up with Rocket’s origin story in the largest spaceship in MCU history: The Bowie, which debuted in “The Holiday Special.” According to the backstory, the massive, four-story craft was built by power tool expert Rocket (Bradley Cooper). “We always thought of it as the muscle car of spaceships,” production designer Beth Mickle told IndieWire.
In honor of Rocket, the Bowie ended up in the shape of a giant circular saw after initial sketches involved various power tool designs. The art department then built the Bowie’s interior as a series of interconnected sets (three stories high) with seven different areas on a 20,000-square-foot stage at Trilith Studios in Atlanta.
“We wanted the physical spaces to all be connected by these circular shapes, which we hadn’t seen much of before,” Mickle said. “And we staged...

It’s a slow week for new releases, both in theaters and at home. “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret” deserves to be an Oscar contender — let’s get Rachel McAdams‘ supporting-actress campaign started pronto — but you’ll have to leave the couch to see that one. Without venturing to the multiplex, you can catch two favorites from the Oscars’ most recent shortlists and two new movies with very different sensibilities.
This contender to watch this week: “Moonage Daydream”
“David Bowie: The Last Five Years,” released in 2017, focused on the final chapter in the glam rocker’s storied career. “Moonage Daydream” is about what came before. The film made last year’s Oscar shortlist but was left out when nominations were announced, surprising many who thought this kaleidoscopic profile would be a shoo-in for Best Documentary Feature. Brett Morgan, who also directed the stylish “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,...

The late David Bowie was a natural storyteller. There are countless TV and radio interviews of the musician sharing his creative insights and details of his upbringing, always with razor-sharp wit. The very nature of his work has a decades-long narrative arc, each chapter marked with its own distinct visuals, sounds, and even character names. In the documentary Moonage Daydream, premiering April 29 on HBO and HBO Max, director Brett Morgen pieces together those archival moments, some of which have never before been seen, allowing Bowie’s own work and words to speak for themselves.

Documentary about the trailblazing musician who influenced stars from the Beatles to Bowie also looks back at the artists who inspired him
Lisa Cortes’s documentary is an irresistible tribute to the pioneering rock’n’roll genius, whose wild transgressive energy and explosive sexuality blazed a trail and created a musical and performing language for James Brown, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Elton John, David Bowie, and many other stars – some of whom had the good grace to thank him.
And he is now considered a great queer artist, which is how many interviewees here describe him; Little Richard in fact described himself as gay, and the movie perhaps could have done more analytical work in thinking about the relationship between the two terms. But it certainly does an excellent job at pointing out the hiding-in-plain-sight outrageousness.

While the fate of “Ted Lasso” beyond Season 3 remains unclear, one thing is certain: the episodes keep getting longer.
As the Apple TV+ show adds dramatic elements to its signature light-hearted comedy, exploring the themes that come with studying the psyche of its titular soccer coach and those around him has led to episode lengths stretching for almost an hour. The shortest episode of this season so far is the first, which clocks in at 43 minutes. For series co-creator Brendan Hunt, who also plays Coach Beard, the decision to make episodes longer came organically.
“It wasn’t that conscious of a decision,” Hunt told TheWrap ahead of the release of Episode 7 (which runs at 57 minutes.) “We just kept writing the stories that we wanted to tell, and Apple didn’t seem to mind if they were longer than expected.
“It’s a great luxury, and it comes from being on a streaming service,...

At the 1987 Conservative Party Conference in Britain, then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher issued one of the most grimly memorable quotes of her career: “Children who need to be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay.” For many of us, it’s a line that now sounds so archaically out of step with contemporary life as to be comical — that “inalienable right” wording ironically appropriated by many a queer-rights cause — though you need only look at Florida’s recent Don’t Say Gay bill to know that Thatcher’s sentiments live among us still. A frank, piercing debut from British writer-director Georgia Oakley, “Blue Jean” is a Thatcher-era period piece that crisply evokes that climate of politically propagated homophobia without preserving it in amber: It effectively puts the past in tacit dialogue with the present.
