Blue Rodeo frontman Jim Cuddy knows there’s some underlying disdain for Toronto from fellow Canadians, but says Massey Hall is an exception. “As much as Canadians have antipathy towards our great city, there are three things that they love: Massey Hall, Maple Leaf Gardens and the Cne,” Cuddy said. “And those are generally accepted as, […]...

When news broke early this morning that East Coast singer Rita MacNeil had died at age 68, tributes came pouring in from far and wide.
And while kind words from rockers like Joel Plaskett and the drunken rascals in the "Trailer Park Boys" may have outwardly seemed peculiar considering MacNeil was a pleasant country/folk from an entirely different generation, what people don't realize is that she helped out many, many musicians and artists over the years.
MacNeil's variety show "Rita And Friends" ran on CBC from 1994-1997 and showcased a diverse range of musical acts.
We tracked down a number of videos from the show featuring the likes of Blue Rodeo, Rusty, Sloan and Ashley MacIsaac and threw in some videos of her notable duets with the likes of Barenaked Ladies and Bruce Cockburn as well as an East Coast Music Awards tribute for good measure.

A number of Canadian musicians have joined forces to show their support for Idle No More, the movement of First Nations people for "healthy, just, equitable and sustainable communities."
According to the CBC, Feist, Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Blue Rodeo, former Barenaked Ladies singer Steven Page and The Tragically Hip's Gord Downie have signed a petition backing the movement. The petition was started by Weakerthans' singer John K. Samson just before Christmas (Dec. 21) and originally sent it through various contacts.
"The response was immediate and huge, from artists of all disciplines, genres and mediums," Samson said, adding he got the idea after a conversation with his friend and writer Leanne Simpson, a member of the Alderville First Nation. "It's fundamental to how we think of ourselves and our identity and what a fair and just society should be. Artists have to be right at the forefront of that,...

Toronto -- Indie-rock songstress Leslie Feist took home a Juno for Artist of the Year on Sunday night, and jazz crooner Michael Buble's holiday-themed "Christmas" claimed the prize for Album of the Year at the 41st annual Canadian music awards ceremony.
Feist, best known for her whimsical 2007 song "1234," which became an international hit after it was featured in an iPod nano commercial, might have surprised some with Sunday night's win since her contemplative fourth disc, "Metals," wasn't nominated for Album of the Year.
Feist's big win brought her Juno tally to three for the weekend, and 11 for her career.
"I just need a second," she marveled as she stepped to the microphone, shaking her head from side to side, looking stunned, as well as stunning in a red, lace dress.
"I'm just in shock. ... I guess all I can really do is try to express some genuine gratitude. I can't believe I'm standing here.
