Exclusive: Harald Zwart, director of 2010 reboot The Karate Kid, has been set to direct thriller Betrayed, which is in development for LA-based production banner Onphaya.
The film will chart the story of a Professor of Archeology who discovers some ancient biblical text fragments that shake the foundations of religious thought. Her personal safety and longtime beliefs are challenged as she fights to overcome evil factions that will go to any length to ensure the truth remains buried in history.
Pic is based on a script by Australian writer-director Antony J. Bowman (Paperback Hero), inspired by a story from Phillip Middleton and Bowman. Peta Johnson will executive-produce the project with Rick Selvage for Onphaya.
“It is important now to bring Betrayed to the screen with its timely yet sometime controversial themes. It is an action thriller for our times”, said Selvage, an executive producer on Amazon series The Wheel of Time.

Exclusive: Wheel Of Time execs Ted Field and Rick Selvage are among producers of feature biopic Les Indépendants about American impressionist Mary Cassatt and her relationship with French painter Edgar Degas.
French filmmaker Anaïs Tellenne (From the Big Fire Only the Embers Remain) has been attached to direct. Diah Wymont (costumer on Dick Tracy), inspired by the story of Cassatt forging her own path in the 19th century art world, makes her screenwriting debut after a long career as a costume designer.
The film will chart the story of Cassatt as a young woman with talent and an adventurous spirit striving to make it in Paris where she confronts chauvinism, elitism, art world misogyny, and the ravages of war. She falls in love with renowned artist Edgar Degas [in real life the artistic collaborators were not lovers] and their love and talent challenge the establishment as their fame grows. Ultimately, Cassatt must choose between Degas’ love and her own artistic path.
Ultimately, Cassatt must choose between Degas’ love and her own artistic path.

iwot productions and Radar Pictures have tapped screenwriter Zack Stentz to pen the script for the first of three planned motion pictures based on Robert Jordan’s bestselling series of books, The Wheel of Time.
“I’ve been a fan of Robert Jordan’s work for many years, and it is especially his allusions to the origins and backstory of The Wheel of Time that I have always found most intriguing. I’m excited to be bringing this era Robert Jordan conceptualized to life,” said Stentz, “A fusion of the fantasy and science-fiction genres, the Age of Legends is a tale of paradise lost, as a futuristic Garden of Eden devolves into a dangerous and broken world.”
“We are fortunate to have an accomplished storyteller like Zack Stentz,” said Rick Selvage, President of iwot productions, “his ability to portray unforgettable characters who command great powers while...

Amazon is doubling down on The Wheel of Time.
The streamer has renewed the fantasy series for a second season ahead of the launch of the show. It comes as production has wrapped on season one in the Czech Republic.
It is the latest market in a long road for the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s books, which has been in development in one form or another for 20 years and that Amazon ordered to series in October 2018. Like many series, production of the drama was also hit by the pandemic.
The Wheel of Time, set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it, is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television and comes from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Chuck writer Rafe Judkins, who is showrunner and exec producer.

“The Wheel of Time” series at Amazon has been renewed for Season 2 just as production is ending on Season 1, Variety has learned.
Based on the Robert Jordan novel series, “The Wheel of Time” was first ordered at Amazon back in 2018. Set in a world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.
“The belief Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have shown in ‘The Wheel of Time’ has been incredible to see throughout the entire process of making this show,” said series showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins.

Isabella Rossellini and Jeanie Drynan will topline writer-director Antony J. Bowman’s Arrivederci, due to shoot across central Nsw and southern Greece early next year.
Billed as a “gut-wrenching but ultimately heart-lifting story”, the film will see Drynan star as Izzy Davies, a farmer’s wife who loses her husband to cancer. Knowing that it’s time to hand over the farm to her son and his family, she refuses to consider their plan to move her into a local retirement home.
Following a lifelong desire to go to Greece, she heads off on her “last adventure” and meets Francesca, an Italian opera diva (Rossellini) who will change her life forever.
Drynan (Muriel’s Wedding) also starred in Bowman’s 1999 film Paperback Hero, starring Hugh Jackman.
Arrivederci will be produced by Michael Robertson and Neal Kingston via their Thrills & Spills banner with production services in Greece by Argonauts Productions Sa.
