Parted ways. Stepping down. Transitioning to a production deal. Moving on to new opportunities. These are a few examples of the language typically relied on by Hollywood executives and their soon-to-be-former employers when they announce a change in job status. Inventive verbiage has gotten a lot of use lately with the recent executive exits at Sony (film chief Doug Belgrad and TV chairman Steve Mosko), NBC (Universal TV head Bela Bajaria), HBO (top programmer Michael Lombardo), ABC (network chief Paul Lee) and Own (co-president Sheri Salata). Now, I don't profess to know exactly why each of

Let no one accuse Oprah Winfrey of letting her Own channel become the unofficial Tyler Perry network. Now comes word that Own is developing "Tulsa" (working title), a two-night miniseries set to star Oscar winner Octavia Spencer ("The Help"). The miniseries will tell the story of the largest race riot in U.S. history, during which 300 people are believed to have been murdered. With Spencer's name above the title, we can't help but think this is sure to be Emmy Awards bait. Describing this as "a story that was largely covered up for decades," Own says that Spencer will be playing the role of Mattie Clay, a journalist who moves back to Tulsa after a stint in Chicago where she must "face the demons of her past and decide where her future lies." The miniseries will be executive produced by Nancy Miller ("Saving Grace"), and co-executive producers are Valerie Woods...

Own said today that the upcoming fifth season of documentary series Our America With Lisa Ling will be its last. The cancellation is a significant because of Our America‘s place in Own’s history. Premiering in February 2011, Our America was part of the network’s inaugural slate of unscripted series aimed at empowering women and helping them better their lives. It was the only show of the bunch not hosted by Winfrey to draw a sizable audience while Own was going through major growing pains and the only one to make it that far. During Own’s dark early months of big ratings struggles, Our America carried the torch with solid ratings and critical response. Own finally scored a second hit in late 2011 with Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s, which signaled a turn to entertainment fare, often targeting black audiences. That trend was cemented by the mega-deal with Tyler Perry,...

The long-promised docu-series starring Lindsay Lohan has a premiere date on Own.
"Lindsay," which looks to be a warts-and-all look at Lohan's life, career and interactions with her family, will premiere March 9. The show is part of a deal Lohan and Own struck that included an Oprah Winfrey interview special that aired last summer.
"Lindsay" is directed by Amy Rice, a writer on "The Newsroom" and co-director of the 2009 HBO documentary "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama." She also appears on camera at one point during the show to complain about Lohan's lack of cooperation in the project.
Based on a teaser Own showed Thursday (Jan. 9) at the TCA winter press tour, that's a running theme. Lohan speaks candidly to the camera at times, but there are also scenes with Own president Sheri Salata complaining to Winfrey about Lohan shutting out the crew.
So, yeah, this could be a must-watch.

Own is doubling the episode order of its first original scripted series, Tyler Perry's "The Haves and the Have Nots."
The low-budget soapy drama premiered on May 28 to the highest ratings of any series premiere in Own history, and has been averaging 1.5 million viewers in the weeks since. Those are solid numbers by the standards of the previously struggling network, owned by Oprah Winfrey.
The current 16 episode run of "Haves" ends September 3, but Own has ordered an additional 16 episodes to premiere in early 2014. The additional episodes are considered part of Season 1, bringing the season's overall episode count to 32.
With the production values of a daytime drama, and performances straight out of late night pay cable, "Haves" has not been a hit with critics. But Own's press release touts the show's status as the #1 non-sports program on Tuesday nights among all African-American women.

The Haves And The Have Nots is growing on the Oprah Winfrey’s network. Own announced today that it has ordered 16 more episodes of the freshman Tyler Perry-produced drama. That brings the first season of the show up to 32 episodes. Haves And The Have Nots’ May 28 premiere was the network’s highest-rated debut ever. The series about the rich Cryer family and their hired help garnered 1.77 million viewers (1.57 in women 25-54) at 9 Pm and another 1.8 million (1.67 in women 25-54) for its second original episode at 10 Pm in late May. “Naturally, it is wonderful to have the network’s first scripted series score so resoundingly”, said Own president Sheri Salata in a statement today. “Tyler’s fans and Own viewers have responded to this guilty pleasure in record numbers, and we are happy to give them more of a good thing”. The series’ initial 16-episode order will run to September...

Another long-time executive from Oprah Winfrey’s inner circle is out. After a 18-year stint as president of Harpo Films, Kate Forte was let go today. While the company continues to have a couple of projects in development at HBO where the company has been under a deal since 2008, Harpo Films has little to show for its efforts in the past 5 years as its last projects to reach fruition were the 2007 movie The Great Debaters, one of only two features produced by the unit, and 2007 ABC telefilm Mitch Albom’s For One More Day. Harpo Films is a vestige of old times — it was active in the broadcast movie business, doing six films for ABC between 1997 and 2007. But the demand for long-form projects, especially on the broadcast side, has dried out. And now the Los Angeles-based Harpo Films will de facto fold. As part of a restructuring, its larger sibling production company,...

The Own Network is bulking up with a half-dozen new originals. The channel's first scripted series — drama The Have and the Have Nots and comedy Love Thy Neighbor — both come from Tyler Perry. Also forthcoming are reality shows Blackboard Wars (about a struggling New Orleans school), Raising Whitley (comedian Kym Whitley raises a baby with friends), Dogfellas (ex-mobster becomes dog groomer) and Golden Sisters (three elderly sisters operate a salon). All six series "reflect the best of the human spirit," says Own president Sheri Salata.

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. Own co-presidents Sheri Salata and Erik Logan continued to put a positive spin on the embattled network’s forecast, appearing this afternoon at TCA to echo comments a few days ago by Discovery Networks CEO David Zaslav. “Sheri and I are very encouraged by what’s happened and what we’ve established over the past year,” Logan said. “We’ve established ourselves with original programming on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.” He boasted that Oprah Winfrey Network has had three successive quarters of year-over-year growth, “and we’re up double digits in primetime and total day overt last year.” Logan further noted that Own has experienced 28 consecutive weeks of ratings growth. Of course, the network’s numbers had been so skimpy they really had nowhere to go but up. Related: Own Announces Fall Lineup, Adds New Series Own Should Be Profitable In Late...

Exclusive: The struggling Own: Oprah Winfrey Network has laid off 30 employees or 20% of its workforce today as the network is restructuring its operations in Los Angeles and New York. The responsibilities handled by the eliminated positions will be redistributed among remaining executives as well as employees of Own’s owners, Discovery Communications and Winfrey’s Harpo Studios. “It is difficult to make tough business decisions that affect people’s lives,” said Oprah Winfrey, Own’s CEO and chief creative officer, “but the economics of a start-up cable network just don’t work with the cost structure that was in place. As CEO, I have a responsibility to chart the course for long-term success for the network. To wholly achieve that long-term success, this was a necessary next step.” Departing as part of the layoffs is Own Svp Production Julie Stern. Additionally, Own COO John MacDonald went to management a few...
